Our community farm is planted!

Last weekend a group of hard working volunteers got this huge backyard garden plot fully weeded and seeded in no time 💪🌱

We focused on storage crops and thanks to your generous seed donations, we seeded carrots 🥕, beets, beans 🫘, Swiss chard, potatoes 🥔, cucumbers 🥒, Sunflowers 🌻, and so many delicious varieties of winter squash. All interplanted with Blue Flax and Honeywort for our friends 🐝🦋

We will share info this weekend on how you can get involved as a volunteer and where all this food will be going!

That cover crop we tried a few weeks ago? It’s only coming in now and it definitely isn’t outcompeting the Creeping Bell Flower 🙊

SO, we did a lot of weeding yesterday and will leave the cover crop to establish further in a couple of rows and plant into the rest.

2 out of 3 yards are fully planted/seeded and just this one left to plant! (Plus two other plots that aren’t dedicated flower yards, but those come after these ones are done 🤪)

Big yard day yesterday! We went from sod to garden in one afternoon thanks to lots of helpful hands 🤠👏💚

This yard will be mostly veggies 🥒🥔this year with some perennials as we work towards establishing a larger perennial cutting garden🪻over the next few years.

Step by step 🪜coming soon on the yard flip process we use ☀️

First of this season’s seeding from today ☀️ Soil health is the name of the game this year (and every year, but FOR REAL this year)

🌸 3 varieties of Larkspur went in this raised bed, from .ca and some saved from last year. These need to be seeded while the soil is still cool and will mature fairly quickly

🫛 The next two beds got seeded with Cascadia Bush Pea. This spot gets pretty shady and hasn’t been very productive, so hopefully this helps build the soil and also produces some food! These seeds were a gift from after touring their super cool seed farm 🌱

🍀Then a cover crop of Crimson Clover & Daikon Tilling Radish @ the Princess St yard. The idea here is to outcompete the persistent Creeping Bell Flower 🤞, break up some of the hard clay, and add organic matter to build some super soil 🪱

+ a bonus shot of the compost bins my mom & I built today. More to come on the journey with thermophylic composting 👩🏻‍🔬

A few big changes ‘round here for this year! 🌸☀️

Since our first season in 2021, we’ve grown a lot of different crops, tried every which way to market them, experimented with a variety of farming techniques, and engaged in a few community partnerships. We’ve learned a LOT and as we wrapped up our fourth season, it was time to make way for new opportunities.

The headlines?

👋Miranda is moving!
She & her family are moving out of town and she is stepping away from City Street Farms to focus on their new adventure 🌱There will be a big, tomato-sized 🍅gap with her stepping away, which brings us to…

💐Flowers!
You’re stuck with me (Candace) and as I navigate the future of this little urban farm, the 2025 season will be focused on cut flowers. Veggies will make an appearance on the farm again in coming seasons as we explore opportunities for community engagement, but for now it’s flowers all the way baby!

🐄Small(er) farm!
We have transformed 7 lawns into gardens since 2021 and were farming 6 of those plots last year. As we were navigating the next stage of the farm, several of those homeowners were also looking to switch things up and were ready to garden the plots themselves, having more than fulfilled our 3 year agreements.
So, it just so happens that as our team goes from 2 to 1, our farm has also become half the size. Things just work out sometimes 🤷‍♀️

➡️What now?

Our goal has always been to turn grass into gardens ✅. To demonstrate that you can grow a lot on a small plot of land, and without a whole lot of infrastructure or upfront investment 💸💸💸

We are staying true to that central goal while taking our foot off the gas just enough to reflect on where we want to go next. Thank you for your support over the years - at farmer’s markets, the annual Seedling Sale, our various iterations of weekly veggie baskets 🥕🥒

We are so grateful for it all and are excited to share this next season!

PS - Miranda and I will still be tag-teaming a few events over the season, so this duo will still make appearances here and there😎

Thank you for taking some lovely pics today of the veggie subscription boxes! 🫶

We had some lovely add ons to offer like local urban honey and farm fresh chicken eggs🤠 There is also a lovely bunch of flowers in there because yes, we do flowers too 😻

It’s been a slow and steady start to our veggie season, but we just gotta stay positive and believe that tomatoes and cucumbers are on the way... 👽

A fresh batch of bouquets are this morning! ☕️💐💚☀️
