Is your dog or cat anxious while in clinic? If they have a valid client-patient relationship (meaning they've been seen within the past year) we can prescribe medication to help them be more relaxed.
The medication prescribed is often termed Pre-Visit Pharmaceutical (PVP).
Things to know:
Your veterinary team has prescribed an anti-anxiety medication to help make your pet more comfortable with their veterinary/grooming visits.
Why was this medication prescribed?
- To make your pet more comfortable about his/her visit to the vet
- To decrease your pet's fear of specific procedures such as vaccines or blood draws
Is this medication a sedative?
This medication was NOT prescribed to sedate your pet. While some sedation can be a normal side effect, the primary function is to decrease your dog's fear and anxiety so he/she can have a pleasant, Fear Free experience.
What should I expect?
There are many types of anti-anxiety medications and a wide variety of doses. Individual animals will respond differently to medications. As a result, we can see a range of normal responses from our pets. Once your pet takes this medication, in addition to a decrease in anxiety you may see:
- Drowsiness
- Dilated pupils and elevated third eyelids
- Slow movements, reluctance to move around, wanting to nap
- Slight instability walking, particularly up or down stairs
Although uncommon, occasionally pets may be more sensitive to these medications, leading to some more noticeable side effects such as:
- Substantial drowsiness that may last for several hours
- Mild urinary incontinence (leaking or accidents)
- Hyperactivity, pacing, whining or agitation
If present, do not be alarmed! Any side effects should resolve over the course of the day and these medications are extremely safe and used frequently. Please don't hesitate to call and let us know if you have any questions or concerns about your pet's response.
What if it doesn't work?
Due to the individual responses and the variety of medications and doses, we don't always get the response we are looking for the first time. In these situations, your veterinary team will discuss with you the next step. We will create a plan that works for your pet's unique needs!
We hope this helps you pet's next visit be a less stressful event. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to give the clinic a call at 306-545-6487
We are committed to making you and your pet's veterinary experience as stress-free and enjoyable as possible!
If this is something you think your pet would benefit from for their next visit please contact the clinic at 306-545-6487, on the PetDesk app or by email at [email protected]
Use caution if having your pets at the beach at this time of year. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) is a major concern if ingested.

Happy Mastiff Monday from Maddie!
If you have a Mastiff we would love to see photos.
Friendly reminder that all cats need to be in a carrier or on leash on when in the clinic. If on leash, please be aware of the other patients in the waiting room to ensure that your cat does not get stressed out.
We offer a few options to decrease their anxiety:
1. We have tables in our waiting room that are specifically for cats comfort - allowing them to remain higher than the dogs that may also be waiting can decrease the cats stress.
2. Option for concierge appointments - give us a call when you arrive and wait in the car until your veterinarian or technologist is ready for you.

With all of the recent storms lately we figure it may be useful to share some tips and tricks for keeping pets calm β
1.Provide a safe place for animals to be. This can be an area that the curtains and doors are closed creating a comforting environment.
2.Offer distractions in the form of puzzle feeders, bones or frozen meals (their regular food mixed with water or bone broth +/- appropriate healthy snacks)
3.Try a Thundershirt β This snug shirt wraps around your dog and applies gentle, constant pressure, similar to swaddling a baby. It can sooth some dogs into a calmer state.
4.Supplement the scary sounds with music, TV, or white noise.
5. Ask our team for help. If stormy weather affects your pet greatly please talk to your veterinarian about medically managing their scared behaviors.

βI think my pet has an ear infection but I donβt want an exam performed. Can I just get some ear drops?β When any prescription medications are to be dispensed, we need to perform an exam to make sure we are treating the right condition with the right medication, and not inadvertently doing harm by missing something that could have been discovered easily during an exam. Your pet might have a buildup of debris, redness in their ears, and be constantly scratching and bothering at their ears. These symptoms may be caused by bacteria, yeast, or ear mites (like the one in the video!). Before treating, we will likely take an ear swab and look at it under a microscope to determine the culprit. Differentiating between the causes of ear-itation by having an exam and ear swab done can mean more effective and quicker resolution of your petβs troubles to get them back to their regular, happy healthy self!
