Bad Apple Bird Dogs

Bad Apple Bird Dogs We are a couple of bird dog enthusiasts working to bring pointing dog training, workshops, tests/trials, and clinics to Saskatchewan.

Our philosophical belief is that training should be minimal, but effective and kind in nature.

Tell us why you love your chosen breed of bird dog!

For me, Brittanys are a quirky little breed of dogs. I love the ferocity for birds, but the general biddability and good nature on the flip!

I think this passage says it best, link in comments.

Hi folx!

Our event for June 22nd, 2024 event is cancelled. Randi and are going to re-group and aim for Spring 2025. Thanks to everyone who showed interest.

Being the this-won't-stop-us kind of girls that we are, we have some other plans still coming together as well! A possible "Gals with Guns" weekend retreat? Pop-up training days? Tell us what else YOU would like!

And in other exciting news, we are going to collaborate with the Canadian Brittany Club to host a CKC test or trial in Saskatchewan next year! So please stay tuned on that front.

We have the ambition if you bring the interest! We definitely can't do it alone so please let us know if you're interested in volunteering in any capacity.

NEW DATE, NEW RATE!

After a serious illness took out our instructor for our original weekend, we have reworked our Intro, and we're back with a new date!

Join us on June 22 for a full day of all things gundog! You will receive hands on instruction from Graeme Crawford of Point Proven Kennels. Dogs will be introduced to birds, gunfire, backing, and more. You don't want to miss this!

Preference will be given to pointing breeds, however, if you have a Springer or other flushing breed, we want to hear from you!

Puppies are welcome, but must be 6 months of age, or older.

The CKC has announced a few new breeds that will be joining the ranks of "approved" purebreds in Canada:

Venetian Drahhther (Toy Group), Waxbeard (Hound Group), Blue Chasseur Foux (Sporting Group woohoo!!), and High Presbyteround (Herding Group).

Share your thoughts, we are curious how these breeds will measure up to their counterparts in the breed groups.

Such an important message. Training your pointing dog should be done in short, positive sessions. Think of it more as a lifelong journey 🙌🏽, work on the basics often.

Its officially spring time which means its that time of year to really dig in on the training plan for the year. When trying to figure out where to go and how to get there, be sure to use the right balance. Ethan Pippitt () of Standing Stone Kennels returns this week to chat about finding the right balance in your training.
• A dog’s experience moves a dog forward more so than a dog’s age
• Everything in training is good. In moderation.
• Setting realistic and attainable training plans
• Dont get greedy. Look for the perfect time to stop.
• Find your network and put eyes on what you are after

An awesome initiative!

An awesome initiative!

With spring-cleaning on everyone’s mind, the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation wants to remind people that they can turn guns, antlers, and used hunting and fishing equipment into habitat for wildlife across the province, while receiving a tax-deductible receipt for their generosity.

Celebrating over two decades of success, the SWF's Guns for Habitat and Antlers for Habitat initiatives have allowed individuals to donate unwanted fi****ms, antlers, and hunting & fishing equipment to help purchase critical wildlife habitat in Saskatchewan. These initiatives have garnered in excess of $300,000, with matching programs doubling the impact.

Darren Newberry, SWF's Director of Habitat Lands, expressed gratitude, stating, "We value the generosity of past donors. Proceeds from item sales go toward securing crucial wildlife habitats for the benefit of Saskatchewan's wildlife and future generations of outdoor enthusiasts".

The SWF will gladly arrange for pickup of these donations anywhere across Saskatchewan. The SWF will also provide assistance with the firearm transfer process.

For more information on this or any other SWF programs, please contact us at 306-692-8812, or email [email protected]

Today, we celebrate women.

In a male dominated pastime, we are working to carve out a little area to bring women together with their dogs. We may be small, but we be mighty.

Here are a few great women-run resources for upland hunting. Show them a little love and keep being the strong, fierce, badass woman you are 🖤

The Bird Dog Babe has an AMAZING podcast, give it a listen!!

Reflecting on the past few years, I’ve come to realize that the old adage, “It’s not about the destination, it’s the journey,” holds more truth in my life than I ever could have imagined.

We just finished 5.5 months of our best hunting season yet; each year we improve and grow as a team. Just a week after our Arizona quail hunt, I walked Angus into a dog show ring, unfamiliar territory for him. I am grateful to Diana Han for capturing this moment of triumph for us, a moment where Angus’s physical structure and breed attributes were celebrated in a lineup of incredibly accomplished Bracchi Italiano. This win was not just a testament to Angus’s qualities but a moment of reflection on how far we’ve come together.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have some truly great dogs come into my life, but Angus has a special place among them. The bond we’ve built, the challenges we’ve overcome, and the successes we’ve shared have only deepened my appreciation for him.

Hunting is growing in popularity, according to Pheasant's Forever. The majority of this growth is women!

HerUpland is a wonderful source of information.
