Over the last week, rabies positive cases have been found in bats tested in the Regina and Moose Jaw areas. Bats can enter homes through small openings or cracks, even though the dryer vents. Vaccination is the key to prevention.

Tis the season for foxtails to thrive 🌾

As a reminder these pesky pieces of common w**d have a barbed seed head which helps it to burrow (typically into the soil). We often find pieces embedded in dog's tonsils - like Nala's - whose owner brought her in for assessment after she had been coughing and gagging for a few days.

They can also burrow their way into pet noses, between toes as well as the ears and mouth.

Unfortunately, once embedded they do not come out on their own, often causing irritation and serious infection. In worst case scenarios they can ultimately migrate within the body and puncture internal organs, which can be fatal.

Dr. Taam and our team sedated Nala to remove the foxtails from her tonsillar crypts. She was able to head home a few hours later with medications to help soothe the swelling and irritation 🐾.

Friendly reminder about blue green algae toxicity πŸ”΅πŸŸ’πŸ’§

With the higher summer temps, these blooms, most often found in stagnant waters of lakes, ponds and rivers, produce a toxin that when ingested can be life threatening.

Signs of toxicity can include excessive drooling, seizures, respiratory failure, diarrhea, disorientation, vomiting, muscle rigidity, weakness. Death may occur if symptoms are not rapidly addressed so veterinary attention should be sought immediately.

Boogz was referred to us after his owner had noticed that he was vomiting, lethargic and not interested in his food.

As this was not the first time Boogz had potentially ingested something he shouldn't, his owners were quite aware of the symptoms a pet can show if they've got a blocked gastrointestinal tract. X-rays also supported the owner's suspicions.

Dr. Kour took Boogz into surgery and removed a tiny ⭐shaped item from the area between the stomach and intestinal tract (pen pictured for size comparison). Yes, something this small has the ability to cause a GI blockage, especially in our feline patients.

Boogz needed a few days of supportive care with our team receiving IV hydration and medication until his appetite returned. He was able to continue his recovery at home thereafter πŸ’™πŸΎ

Ivy had a short stay with us when her owner found she had chewed on and punctured an asthmatic inhaler.

Upon presentation, Ivy's heart rate was between 160-220 beats per minute (160 BPM would typically be the high end of normal for a dog of Ivy's size). Blood work also revealed she had low levels of potassium.

This isn't a toxicity exposure our team sees frequently so we consulted with veterinarians at Pet Poison Helpline to help make the best treatment plan for Ivy 🀝🐾

Ivy was hooked up to an ECG to monitor her heart rate and rhythm, given IV fluids supplemented with potassium for hydration and to support her heart function as well as medications for nausea and to help reduce her anxiety/excitement. We also repeated blood work until Ivy's potassium levels were within a normal range.

Thanks to quick action from her owner as well as supportive treatment and close monitoring around the clock by our team, Ivy's heart rate and blood pressure gradually returned to normal and she was soon able to head home πŸ€—

6 yr old shepherd mix, Lucy, was brought in for an assessment by our team when her owner noted she was not acting herself. She had low energy and wasn't really interested in food.

Blood work indicated signs of infection and imaging (x-ray and ultrasound) were highly suspect of an infection within Lucy's uterus known as pyometra.

Pyometra is a very serious infection and requires surgery to remove the uterus immediately. This surgery is much more complicated as compared to a routine spay (which also prevents pyometra) because not only is the patient not in good health, but also because the womb is typically incredibly engorged with fluid and infection (as seen in the pictures below). A healthy spayed canine womb generally weighs only few grams, whereas Lucy's was almost 3kg!

Lucy did fantastic in surgery and recovered well, with her very invested surgical and assistant team by her side. With antibiotics and pain medication, she was able to head home the following morning to continue her recovery. We are happy to report that she is energetic & acting like herself again πŸ’™πŸΎ

The CDC's rules to import dogs into the US from a low risk or rabies free country (I.e. Canada) have been updated again.

Check out the latest in the link below:

Updates to CDC’s August 1 dog importation rule: If you are bringing a dog into the US from a dog rabies-free or low-risk country, you now only need to fill out the simple CDC Dog Import Form. Other forms are no longer needed. The requirements for dogs arriving from high-risk countries have not changed, and these dogs are still required to have additional documents. Scooter presented to us after an early morning romp with a porcupine with a good number of quills embedded in his face, chest and legs. Tiny barbs on the tip of quills help them to move deeper into tissue, rather than outward, which if not removed can then lead to infection and/or the quills migrating within the body risking the puncture of muscles, joints or vital organs and further complications.

With some sedation on board Dr. Verdadero and his team were able to assess for and remove as many quills as they could feel and get to while Scooter was in as little discomfort as possible. This handsome man was able to head home shortly after he woke up to rest and recover. He'll receive some pain control medication and antibiotics for the next few days and be under the watchful eyes of his owner. Without extensive diagnostic imaging it is difficult to know whether ALL the quills are ever removed.

A few fun facts: porcupines can have up to 30,000 quills & they do not "throw" their quills, instead the quills easily detach from the porcupine when they anchor to the porcupine's attacker

Bonnie came to us when her owner noticed that she had become less active and wasn't eating her food for the previous few days.

Veterinarian, Dr. Herperger, started Bonnie's exam with a physical assessment and felt a palpable object in the area of Bonnie's throat.

Our team then took an x-ray which revealed a thin wired object (upper right picture below).

With a bit of sedation to ensure Bonnie was calm and comfortable we were able to extract the foreign body with the help of a laryngoscope and some skillful hands. Bonnie was able to return home with her owner shortly after she was a bit more awake and we are happy to report that she is back to her normal self and activities πŸ’™πŸΎ

Thinking about pet insurance? Read the following:

8yr shepherd mix, Roxie, was brought in to us when her owners noticed she had a reduced appetite for the past few days and was now vomiting.

Blood work showed that Roxie had significant loss of her kidney function and would need intensive clinical care.

The good news: Roxie's owners had pet insurance and they did not hesitate to do everything they could for her.

For the next 14 days, Roxie was hospitalized with us to receive IV fluids, IV medications, multiple repeat blood work to monitor her kidney values and electrolytes, feeding tube (because she would not eat on her own) as well as in-house ultrasound & CT scans in an attempt to figure out what had caused the kidneys to be affected so quickly and substantially.

Although the cause of the kidney injury was never determined, with the tireless efforts made by our amazing vet & tech team Roxie made a full recovery and only needed a few follow up blood work appointments to check in on her kidney function. We received an updated photo just yesterday (bottom right) of her relaxing on her family's front porch πŸΎπŸ’™

Pet insurance covered over $15,000 of Roxie's care, treatment & follow up (90% of eligible expenses).

Our team would be happy to chat about pet insurance options and plans should anyone have any questions :)
