We talk a lot about IVDD, intervertebral disc disease. It is the most common neurological condition we treat at our clinic. 👉 There are 5 grades of IVDD and treatment is either surgical or conservative / medical management. 🐾 Concussive and compressive injury to the spinal cord may cause signs of back pain, paraparesis, paraplegia, loss of deep pain, inability to independently urinate. 🐾 The most common site of spinal cord injury in small breed dogs is the thoracolumbar region (mid-back). 🐾In situations where surgical decompression is not recommended or owners are unable or unwilling to accept a surgical referral, conservative treatment can be effective. ❓Does conservative therapy mean only cage or crate rest? No, not exactly. It consists of analgesics(pain medication), muscle relaxants, rehabilitation, activity restriction, acupuncture/ electroacupuncture and nursing care (bladder management). 🐾 A minimum of 8 weeks management should be considered in non ambulatory dogs with suspect or confirmed thoracolumbar IVDD. 🐾 Jericho 🐾 started his IVDD rehab 2 weeks ago. Initially, he could not stand on his own and was unable to use his hind legs at all (paraplegia). He required at home bladder expression for the first 1-1.5 weeks post injury. He has progressed with his treatment thus far… in fact, he is showing massive improvements! - he regained the ability to urinate and have bowel movements on his own - pain has decreased - improved muscle tone in his back legs - improved core and spinal muscle activation - regained the ability to stand on his > 30 seconds, with minimal assistance Activity restriction, ongoing rehab therapy and management is still necessary and needed for the next while and the expectation would be to transition Jericho from: acute injury care ➡️ spinal management & maintenance strengthening #ivddsurvivor #ivdd #vet #rehabvet #vetrehabbers #vetneuro
