Michael’s WHY!

“My name is Michael Peterman. I’m a 24 year old from Ontario. I dropped out of an engineering program to work on some mental health issues, and ever since I’ve been searching for a new career path. Then, in the summer of 2023, I got a job at a local doggie daycare. It was just a part time gig, but I LOVED working with the dogs–learning all of their personalities, developing my relationship with them, observing their body language. Being in contact with the dogs all day hugely improved my general mood. I only worked at the daycare for a few months, but it made quite an impact on me. I decided that if I could spend most of my working hours around dogs, I’d be a happy guy–simple as that.
So, I looked at my options–grooming, walking, daycare/kenneling, breeding, etc. Of all these options, grooming jumped out at me. Anyone can run a daycare or dog walking business, but grooming calls for specific skills and knowledge which the general public lacks–a ‘trade’ of sorts, if not in the Red Seal sense. I asked my dog’s groomer about the job market, and she said there is a lot of demand for good groomers right now. She’s constantly turning away new clients because her books are full. After a lengthy chat over the course of my dog's grooming, she encouraged me to pursue a career in the field.”

🐾 Fact Friday: Golden Retrievers 🐾

Golden Retrievers, a beloved member of the Sporting Group, have a unique combination coat. Their coat features both long, silky fur and short, smooth fur. You'll notice a tighter, shorter coat around their face and legs, while their body boasts longer, flowing fur, especially on the undercarriage, legs, and tail. This beautiful coat requires regular grooming to prevent mats and tangles—brushing daily to weekly is essential!

Did you know? Their coat is designed to protect them in all seasons, keeping them cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Grooming Tip: We recommend a full groom every 8-12 weeks and nail trims every 4-6 weeks. Remember, shaving your Golden Retriever is not advised as it can damage the coat and leave them vulnerable to sunburn and bug bites. Instead, opt for a de-shedding service to help manage shedding, removing up to 80% of the dead undercoat!

Golden Retrievers are active, friendly, and reliable companions, with a coat that reflects their vibrant personality. Keep them looking their best with regular grooming! 🐕✨

Did you know that pet grooming is a completely unregulated industry?

There is no requirement for formal education, no required continuing education, and no required testing or certification?

Anyone can pick up a pair of clippers, advertise themselves as a groomer, and charge people for a service they aren’t trained to perform.

It’s completely up to you, the owner, to do your research and make sure the person you trust with your pet's health and safety is qualified to care for them.

Every groomer should be trained, and that very basic training takes months.

It takes years to master the ins and outs of grooming and everything that goes with it.

Pet grooming is so much more than just a hairstyle.

*It’s being able to recognize dog behaviours and safely handle all the different personalities and quirks.

*It’s recognizing health conditions that would be better suited to a vet visit, such as skin or ear infections.

*It’s being prepared for any and all emergencies that can happen, from seizures to allergic reactions to nicks and cuts and quicked toenails without panicking.

*It’s knowing how to best deal with various coat types properly.

*It is recognizing when to stop a service on a particular dog due to behaviour or health.

*It’s having the knowledge and patience to handle a different species while holding razor-sharp clippers or 8-inch-long scissors.

At the very least, the groomer you use should seek out continuing education to ensure they are current on industry changes, from product upgrades to tools that make the process easier for both the pet and the groomer.

They should be current on their pet's CPR/first aid certification, which must be repeated every few years.

They should be able to answer your grooming-related questions with knowledge and confidence; if they don’t know the answer, they should know where to find it.

They should have an emergency plan in place with a local veterinarian in case anything happens because when working with animals, it’s not a matter of if something happens, but when.

They should be recommended by other pet owners and pet professionals.

And it’s worth noting that there is nothing wrong with using a groomer that is still in training, but they should be working alongside an experienced groomer and under their direct supervision.

Ask the questions, after all you are paying them for a service. A groomer who has spent time and money to be as educated as possible is excited to share their knowledge!
