🤧‼️Regina Kennel Cough Warning‼️😷
This is an edited repost from December, but it's going around again!

There looks to be an outbreak of kennel cough in Regina and it seems to be an antibiotic resistant strain so we are advising all dog owners to take precautions, be mindful and help reduce the spread.

❓What is kennel cough?:
Kennel cough can cause a dry, hacking cough that sounds like something is stuck in a dog's throat. While some dogs only experience mild symptoms, kennel cough can progress to pneumonia and can become life threatening.
So to recap KC is not life threatening - pneumonia can be.

❓What Are the Symptoms of Kennel Cough?
If your dog has kennel cough, you may notice one or more of the following symptoms:
🟢Strong cough, often with a “honking” sound (the most obvious symptom)
🟢Runny nose
🟢Sneezing
🟢Lethargy
🟢Loss of appetite
🟢Low fever

In the last week we have been informed of three unconfirmed cases of KC...the dogs are coughing so we will assume it is kennel cough and it is contagious.
We are asking everyone using our facility for training, daycare, private dog park rental etc., to monitor their dogs closely.
We ask you do NOT bring your dogs into our building if you think there is a chance they could be sick. This is a standard policy for all our clients at all times but we are using this time to remind everyone and highlighting kennel cough.
We ask that your dog stays home for 10-14 days AFTER they stop showing symptoms.

Kennel cough usually has many strains so vaccinated dogs are not guaranteed to not get it. They could be vaccinated for one strain and catch a different one.
Ways to prevent your dog from becoming sick:
Do NOT take your dog to a public dog park.
Do NOT allow your dog to interact with dogs you don’t know first hand are healthy.
This is an air borne transmitted disease so it can spread easily.
When an infected dog coughs or sneezes, tiny respiratory droplets containing infectious agents are released into the environment. These droplets can be inhaled by other dogs in close proximity, leading to new infections. Contaminated Surfaces: Kennel cough can survive on surfaces for a short period but it can live on clothing for 48 hours and outside about 30 minutes.
As always, we are taking our precautions with daycare dogs, making sure they are using the same kennels throughout out the day, and we are sanitizing thoroughly at the end of the day. As well as sanitizing our floors and walls and all surfaces daily.

❓What can you do?
You can boost your dogs immune system naturally by adding Pro-immunity extras such as red-bell peppers, berries (strawberries and blueberries), as well as spinach, carrots or kale to your dogs food daily.
Bone broth is rich in amino acids, which the immune system is dependent on to function properly. Amino acids regulate the immune system and are needed to produce antibodies that fight infection so adding bone broth (which you can buy or make yourself) to your dogs food daily is also beneficial.
If your dog shows signs of kennel cough Honey is an excellent home remedy and can soothe the dog's irritated throat. Mix a tablespoonful of honey with warm water and offer it three times a day. (I opt to let my dog lick a small amount straight from the spoon for more direct impact as this is how I treat my own coughs using Manuka honey.)
Oil of oregano is also very effective as is coconut oil. If your dog will take a capsule I would give it by capsule as OoO is very potent!
You can mix a drop oil of oregano with coconut oil and mix with their food if they will eat it.
There are also many supplements you can buy to boost immunity or for treating kennel cough.
Be diligent with your dogs health. Do your own research and do what is best for you. Kennel cough can be treated at home but you must monitor your dog closely. Call your vet if you are concerned and they will advise if a vet visit is warranted.
Don’t be so quick to rush to the vet as you risk infecting every other dog at the clinic - it is an airborne transmitted illness and dogs can get it simply by breathing the same air as an infected dog in close quarters (using the same patient room, or even in the lobby). It can stay on humans clothing for 48hrs, so if the vet treats your dog then goes back to the sick dogs in kennels or treats other dogs and they can transmit it from their clothing.

If your dog already has kennel cough and you want to get the Bordatella vaccine - wait until your dog is healthy again so you don’t compromise their already compromised immune system anymore. Once they have KC rushing to the vet for the vaccine won’t help - it is already too late. And again - you don’t know the strain and vaccine will match up.
You can vaccinate preemptivly if your dog is healthy if you are concerned, but again don’t be surprised if your dog still gets it.
Kennel cough is not a deadly disease, and can be treated at home (I have experienced it twice in my entire life with dogs and treated it on my own), but if your dog develops pneumonia then this must be treated by a veterinarian. Signs of pneumonia include lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, and a greenish-yellow discharge from the nose.

If your dog is showing symptoms, plenty of rest (kennel time), fluids and immune boosters as listed above, and a call or trip to the vet if symptoms get worse. Symptoms can last a few days or a week for symptoms to lesson. Wash all toys and bedding and sanitize your home thoroughly.
Again, we ask that your dog stays home for 10-14 days AFTER they stop showing symptoms.
Stay diligent. Together we can keep our dogs healthy! 🙏🏼💕🐕
