If your Mastiff puppy is around 6 months old, it’s time to start preparing for her first heat cycle! While some girls start their heat as early as 6 months, others may not come into heat until 15-16 months. Every dog is different, so keep an eye out for signs that she’s entering this important stage of development.

What to Expect:

Heat cycles last about 2-3 weeks but the first one can be even longer, up to 4 weeks

Look for swelling of the v***a, a slight bloody discharge, and behavioral changes.

Some girls, like our Morgan, become very affectionate and clingy during their cycle, craving constant attention. Others may start off irritable with other dogs but become quite obsessive for attention (especially toward males) as the cycle progresses.

How to Prepare:

Doggy Diapers: Essential for keeping your home clean and your pup comfortable. Choose ones designed for large breeds. Make sure to give them time without the diaper as some dogs can develop a UTI if left in it too long. Our Morgan was pretty good to keep herself clean and we found we only needed to use them in the beginning when it was heavier.

Hygiene Supplies: Pet-safe wipes make clean-ups a breeze.

Extra Supervision: Male dogs will take notice, so make sure your girl is safely supervised to avoid accidental breeding. Believe me if there's a way they will figure it out! And they can smell them miles away so don't even let her outside for a minute unattended. It is often better if you can separate them in different ends of the house or even better, maybe a friend or family member can take one until she's completely done her cycle. It can be very stressful for your male, they typically won't eat and will pant non stop. Our Boden lost just over 10 pds the last time! 😬
