This is Lily. She is 23 years old and @martha_and_ben has been following her on Tiktok watching as she enjoys life, the patience her human has for her, and the respect and love she continues to receive, even at the age of 23.
Senior pets deserve love. Age is not a reason to stop playing with them - just play with them differently! Age is not a reason to stop caring for them or care for them any less - you just may need to change your lifestyle a bit to accommodate them.
Their nails grow faster due to their arthritic paws. Regular nail trims are essential to prevent them over growing into their paw pads. There are lots of signs to watch out for in your senior pets and Canyon Hill Animal Hospital wants to help you understand these signs.
We all get old. We just want for all pets to have and feel the love that Lily gets every day until their last.

Remember everyone, it’s always best to do what your cat tells you. Except when it comes to going outside. Don’t let them fool you! If you want to take them out, harness them up and get out there with them on a leash!
Though this may require some training, it may help to stimulate your bored kitty who keeps attacking your ankles for seemingly no reason (the reason is that they’re bored!).
Ask us about parasite prevention before taking them outside, please! Nobody likes a flea infestation - that is not a good journey for anyone.

Intestinal (endo)parasites!! These are roundworms that were vomited up by one of our feline patients. Parasites, especially tapeworms, can very commonly cause an itchy bum and scooting, which can be seen in cats but is much more common in dogs. Nobody wants to find these on the floor in their house. Prevention is key! Stop the infection before it can take hold. We recommend having your outdoor cat and/or dog on prevention medicine monthly for as long as they continue to go outside. (Worms don’t go away in the wintertime.)

. If your cat or dog is scooting, there could be other causes and any excessive scooting warrants a trip to the vet.
. A cat who is vomiting more than usual should also see their vet.
. We recommend annual fecal testing to make sure your pets are parasite free 🤗

Ticks! Gross, right? We’re seeing a lot of them this year and will continue to see them as long as the weather remains mild. Ticks have been around for tens of millions of years and have had all that time to evolve into the hardy and near indestructible form we see them in today.

Here’s how it works: A female tick embeds her head under the skin of her host (e.g. a person, a dog, a cat, etc.) and after a few hours, she begins to regurgitate saliva into her host along with whatever bacteria she may be carrying. Deer ticks are the most common ticks that we see in this area and we worry mostly about their potential to transmit the bacteria, Borrelia, which can cause Lyme disease. Not only do we need to be cautious ourselves, we also strongly endorse the use of parasite preventatives that kill ticks (and fleas!) usually within 2 hours of beginning her bloodmeal thus not allowing her the time it would take to regurgitate her potentially bacteria-filled saliva back into her host.

If the temperature is below 4 degrees Celsius, we usually don’t worry about ticks. However, if the temperature does not stay consistently below 4 degrees (e.g. if we have a mild winter), we highly recommend continuing use of a tick/flea preventative medication.
