How does my veterinarian check for parasites?

F***l checks. Your veterinary staff will recommend checking a pet’s stool sample at least once a year to look for worm eggs and single-celled organisms.

Skin scrapings and cytology. Any pet who scratches or has signs of ear problems, hair loss, red skin, or open sores should be checked for external parasites, fungi/yeast, and bacteria.

Blood testing. Depending on where you live, your vet may advise annual heartworm and tick-borne disease testing. Early detection of conditions like heartworm and Lyme disease allows for more successful treatment.

Indoor pets need to be checked too. Fleas, mosquitoes, and other parasites do not have good manners. If they can find a way into your home, they can infest or infect your pet.

Can I prevent my pet from getting these worms and creepy-crawlies?

Prevention is always easier than treatment. Depending on where you live in Canada, your pet’s lifestyle (indoor/outdoor), and their overall health status, your veterinarian will recommend a customized parasite prevention plan. There are very effective veterinary products to prevent serious diseases associated with heartworms, fleas, ticks, and mites. These medications will also treat many of the common intestinal parasites that can infect our pets.

Dealing with Pets heatstroke

Signs of heatstroke include:

Exaggerated panting (or the sudden stopping of panting);
Rapid or erratic pulse;
Salivation, anxious or staring expression;
Weakness and muscle tremors or lack of coordination;
Convulsions or vomiting, and collapse.

What to do if your pet is showing signs of heatstroke:

Move your pet to a cool, shady place;
Wet the animal with cool water;
Do not apply ice as this will constrict blood flow and discourage cooling;
Fan your pet to promote evaporation. This cools the blood, helping to reduce the animal’s core temperature;
Allow your pet to drink some cool water;
Take your pet to a veterinarian as soon as possible for further treatment.

FLEAS: Fleas are spread from exposure to other animals, commonly other cats, dogs, and rodents that your outdoor cat or dog may interact with. There are many possible treatments for fleas, but be aware that many of the products available at the pet store or department store may pose toxicity risks to a cat. Never apply flea medications, baths or collars to your cat without discussing first with your veterinarian in order to ensure the product is safe. Remember also that if one cat or dog in your household has fleas, you will need to treat all the animals in the household, as well as perform some cleaning of carpets and bedding in the house. Flea eggs and larvae can persist in the carpeting or rugs for up to six months, so preventative products should be used for this length of time at least. To check your pets call our clinic to make an appointment (Bravecto or Revolution are prescription only, consult with your vet.)

Safety Tips You Need to Know

No matter what you do, DO NOT give your pet an alcoholic beverage. Green beer could peak their interest even more, so make sure to keep it far from their reach.

Keep holiday foods away from your pets. Our foods, laden with butter and salt can end up in disastrous digestive issues for your pet. This is true for corned beef as well. The excess sodium in the meat is not good for them.

It’s often best to leave your pet at home if you’re heading to a crowded bar or a parade. They may get anxious or spooked by all the commotion.

Have a safe and happy St.Patrick’s day

We all know chocolate is toxic to dogs but what about cats?

The answer YES- Chocolate toxicity in cats can cause a variety of symptoms including death if a cat is not treated promptly. Since each cat may have different sensitivity levels to theobromine and caffiene, if your cat has eaten chocolate you should contact your veterinarian immediately even if you don't think it was very much.

Careful with this colder temp outside- The paws and ears of our cats and dogs are particularly sensitive to low temperatures. When an animal is cold, they will curl up in a ball to protect their muzzle and paws, but this leaves their ears still exposed. If they are exposed to freezing temperatures for too long, blood circulation to the tip of the ear will stop and could eventually cause it to fall off.

Your pet's paw pads can be hurt by the cold and icy ground, which could cause itchy, painful chilblains or ice burns to form. You should also watch out for grit and salt, which can also irritate their skin.
