It was a great pleasure to present our clinic; "the foundations of Soundness" this past weekend in Colombier, Quebec. We received a warm welcome from our hosts Ria and Nick, who knew us from a previous clinic we'd presented here in 2017. We met an excellent group of students and horses, and made some great memories. As always, thanks to feedback from our students, we come home with even more ideas how to evolve our course content to make the learning experience even better. Working one on one with students is a priceless experience, not only for the students, but for us as well. We will definitely be making another trip to the Côte Nord in the future.

Unfortunately, by the time many owners find us, their equines have already experienced laminitis. Since 80-90% of all laminitis cases are a result of the horse, donkey, or mule having uncontrolled EMS (Equine Metabolic Syndrome) and/or PPID (Equine Cushing's Disease), our goal is to help owners and equine professionals get the correct diagnosis and initiate treatment BEFORE a laminitic event. Here's what you need to know: https://bit.ly/2A36ERq For more details, click here to view our short film: Getting the Correct Diagnosis: https://bit.ly/2BSdEhK

The first day will be an intro to anatomy through dissection, day two will focus on trimming, and day three focuses on hoof protection options including practice with booting and casting.

This clinic will be hands on, in a fun, relaxed learning environment. I hope you can make it!

From the original post:

“You cannot fairly talk about going bare without deeply discussing and evaluating diet and movement.
This barefoot popularity is cool, but concerning. Often like any fad, the crucial details are often over looked. Some horses will be successful with it, but my definition of a sound, healthy barefoot horse is not one that has to walk to the show arena or on any hard surface with a boot on. Usually they do temporarily, especially during a transition, but that is not the ultimate goal. “

Have you ever just come to the abrupt realization that you don't see anything the same anymore?

The two year old that you once would have approved of starting under saddle now looks like an incredibly immature baby that you can't imagine asking to carry a load.

Physical issues that lead to training and performance issues you no longer view as the problem but perhaps the solution to the actual problem.

All of the things you would have considered behavioral issues you can now see as the balance issues that they are. You no longer want to address the behavior but instead the reason for the behavior.

You are no longer fooled by words. Anyone can say anything about their training and approach...but the horse will tell you a lot about whether the words match the action, if you're educated enough to see it. Some things are debatable...other things definitely aren't.

You now recognize that you are a nervous system and your horse is a nervous system...and that the priority is to keep you upright and alive. That matters, A LOT.

You recognize that developing a horse is an endeavor that takes years. YEARS. Years of a lot of time and a lot of commitment. There's truly no substitute.

You also realize that getting here has meant admitting that there were times when you were wrong. That there were times when you did harm with the best of your intentions. That you had to walk away from circles of people whose beliefs and approach no longer lined up with what you now know...or maybe they walked away from you? Either way, it's hard to stand alone sometimes.

You realize you've had to become a beginner a thousand times over...and you'll continue to find yourself in that spot a thousand more times in the future, plus some. Maybe even at some point today.

You realize that even when it feels like you haven't grown at all...you actually have. That growth is something to be proud of, no matter where you're at on your journey.

In celebration of International Women’s day, I would like to give a special shout-out to a group of my local hoof care colleagues who are very near and dear to my heart. I will be eternally grateful to you for your support and friendship. We each run our own businesses in the same area. Our little work family grows bigger every year and I am so proud of what we are all achieving both independently and as a group with similar goals. It just goes to show how working together behind the scenes and supporting each other is more powerful than going it alone💜. Of course there is a bigger group that extends well beyond our local area, and includes so many amazing women there is no way I can name you all, but you know who you are!
