By giving Toffee boundaries (including physical - such as this "back tie" - yes there is slack in the lead) he can just relax and be a dog. I was vacuuming near him when he was doing this. This is part of the foundation I teach every dog.

There is no way Toffee could handle free run of the house (cue massive anxiety and bad decision making lol) - nor has he earned it.

By back tying him I am able to -

- Create healthy distance, promoting independence.

- Give him the skills and ability to just chill, even if the house is chaotic.

- Give my other dogs stress free space - introducing a new dog can be stressful for any pet ... especially when new pet is reactive. It's important to advocate and navigate for your other pets too.

- I can still get the things done that I need to, while working with Toffee as I go.

If you are going to back tie your dog please never ever leave them unattended. They can strangle/tangle themselves leading to injury or death.

When I ask Toffee to just chill with me he cannot cope. The rules of the game are simple just hang out with me and chill … he cannot go in front of me (he guards) or behind me (avoidance) or lean on me (using me as a crutch) … he needs to work through the anxiety … it has to peak in order to drop … I’ll post the video of what happens when you try and offer food (or pets) when he is in this state. He cannot always be distracted - he won’t learn to cope. I also worked him mentally prior to this chill exercise.

The newest member of our pack here at the KlingenFarm … Toffee the Great … Butthead 😂

Fun fact: Did you know Pomeranian’s purpose were to be herding dogs for livestock?

Don’t let his cuteness fool you, 10/10 will bite the heck outta you. He is a mess. Love alone will not fix this dog, nor will treats. Any praise other than a low quiet “yes” or “good” will send him back to anxiety town.

This dog is a product of never being told no, getting everything in life for free and being treated like a baby. He is neurotic. My favourite part is when Toffee got to be too much to handle he was ditched.

Toffee cannot handle life whatsoever. By this I mean he cannot even handle staying in a defined area (like beside me on a leash as we just chill … he will try and use me as a crutch).

He was even medicated; big surprise that didn’t help either. 😒 Don’t get me wrong meds have their place but this dog doesn’t need to be numbed he needs to be rehabbed.

He has learned that by attacking and biting everything he can get out of the situations he does not want to be in. If he was a bigger dog he would be dead … let that sink in.

I am not “training” this dog right now … he is in full blown rehab so we can get him to the point where he can cope with life, instead of just reacting to everything.

Toffee works for everything now - boundaries were put in immediately. He is leashed 100% of the time or in his crate (which he resource guards - pretty much got that straightened out now). He does not get to go through any type of transition without stopping and waiting for approval. He no longer gets to pull on his leash (my gawd the heel I have got on this dog in two days is incredible). He is not allowed to go cujo on other dogs/animals.

He can’t handle life so I’m teaching him to look to me because I’ve got him. No more hiding, biting etc. I have him situations he cannot handle right now (chilling with me for example) and I’m teaching him how to work through it. It’s messy and necessary. It breaks my heart how broken he is and the state of mind he has been living in. I know he will be ok.

In other words he just gets to just be a dog now.

Toffee is hella smart and I know 100% he will be an amazing dog and my best buddy 💜 Proper tool usage is crucial for success. Currently we are using a slip, and place board.

To my husband … thank you babe for putting up with my dog/animal obsession haha. I knew this dog was special the minute I saw a video of him, I appreciate you supporting my gut feeling, even though you very much don’t want another dog. 💜

Stayed tuned for Toffee’s journey … it will be messy and I am committed to documenting the entire journey … in the hopes it educates people and changes the way they treat their dogs - big or small.

Dappy can be anxious at times so working on her “settle” is how I can let her know she isn’t on the clock, and that I’ve got things under control. She is free to just be a dog. 💜

Place work can be used in so many ways. 🥰

Did some training with Dappers this afternoon. She loves to work but is also a sensitive soul. I don’t reprimand her “mistakes” too much when we do stuff like this, instead if she makes the effort I reward it (ex - in video she places herself in a sit next to me instead of on the place board). I can fine tune as we go. Training this way also takes the seriousness out of it … training should be fun. Mistakes are how we learn. How you manage a mistake tells the dog a lot about you. Do they trust you enough to be willing to try … even if they mess up? This also builds her confidence and allows her to enjoy the “game” we are playing. This also strengthens that bond between her and I.
