We often think of our canine companions as strong, loyal, and fearless. But while they may look tough, many dogs can be afraid or reactive to the world around them. Dogs who are easily scared or anxious need extra consideration – and sometimes special protection – to help them stay relaxed in public and at home. Anxiety can cause a variety of behaviors in both dogs and humans - fear of loud noises, aggression toward other animals or people, negative responses to touch and much more. However, such behavior isn’t always instinctive - it can emerge from traumatic past experiences or periods of extreme stress. To raise awareness and understanding for these anxious and reactive dogs, a new movement is picking up steam that better equips owners to protect their vulnerable pets: the concept of ‘Dogs Who Need Space Wear Yellow’. This program aims to provide an easy way for owners to communicate with the public when their pup needs more space than usual due to anxiety issues.
