At the vet with Lenny today to see if he's a candidate for prosthetic. After his bff Edgar passed he is dying to play with another pup but his 1 back leg isn't as young as his brain still is. So we'll hopefully fit him with prosthetic so he can keep running! He had best time visiting everyone who obviously was at the vets just to see him. No other reason anyone would be there am I right? ****Update May 2nd, 2023 ***
Tommy is recovering well thanks to the wonderful care of his foster home. His leg is healing so quickly he is dying to play ball again but not for another 8 - 12 weeks. I've included recent pics of his leg and even though he's gone through his surgery the go fund me will be up for awhile as it has been an expensive month in terms of vet care even before Tommy so any help is appreciated so please share and donate any amount possible!
Also big shout out to Summerland Animal Clinic for the amazing staff! https://www.facebook.com/summerlandanimalclinic?mibextid=ZbWKwL

***Update**** Tommy is at the vet getting ready for his surgery. Keep him in your thoughts. ❤️‍🩹❤️Over the last 8 years I have helped out the community of Rock Creek and area rehoming over 50 animals plus taking in lost and found pets etc. While asking for minimal financial help but now I need help. One of my long term rescue dogs, Tommy that is in a long term foster home (who have been so integral in looking after him for the original owners who had health concerns that led to Tommy coming into the rescue) and have covered all of Tommy's meds after he was diagnosed with an immune disorder plus allow his original owners to visit when they can. Tommy was hit by a car yesterday in a freak accident. Thank goodness he came away with only a fracture in his front leg but it does need to be pinned and plated by an orthopedic surgeon at Summerland animal clinic. Of course the cost will be anywhere from $4500-$5500 so we're asking for any help you could offer either by etransfer to [email protected] or calling the Summerland animal clinic at 250-494-9468 with a credit card and saying it's for Tommy under my name Martha Rogers. He will be going in tomorrow for his surgery. Any little bit helps please and pictures of the wonderful Tommy on one of his visits to his previous parents. His dad had a stroke and Tommy is such a good boi he deserves to live his best life. Any questions feel free to email or call myself at 250-486-8356 or the Summerland animal clinic. Thanks again. Also I've created a gofund me account.

Located in Rock Creek. Up for adoption! Sage is a 6 month old Akbash/Lab Cross. She is too active for her current home so will need active family. Crate trained, good with other dogs and hasn't met kids but probably would love some Littles to hang out with. Will be coming into rescue Wed or Thurs and will be going to vet for vaccines and first check up asap. If interested please pm, call or text Martha at 250-486-8356, or email [email protected] with information about your situation and what you'd offer Sage. Rehoming fee will apply.

So true. People don't understand that I don't spend alot of time "training" my dogs for "on cue" behaviors just for fun. I spend more time letting them be dogs and teach cues more as needed as opposed for "tricks" some dogs love learning tricks like my Byron and we work on that but I respect dogs and especially THEIR brains and what they are looking for to make them happy as opposed to making them to conform to people's expectations. That focus on bond and trust has created my dogs to have the best recall and no leash aggression or pulling etc. They're more interested in where mom is and what she's doing than external influences. Except Ziza she's just always more interested in fun. Probably because when you spend first part of your life just trying to survive you enjoy life as much as you can when the good life comes along. Lol.

The pressure on dog professionals to have ‘perfect’ dogs is often huge. People in the wider community may automatically think ‘well they work with dogs so their dogs should behave.’

This girl is looking for a quiet home where she can hopefully be the only pet or with other animals who would pretty much ignore her. Her previous owners moved out of country and I was hoping she'd fit into my place but sadly she's not happy with all the commotion. She loves attention once she settles in but on her terms. She was indoor/outdoor but seems to be quite happy to be indoor only. She is fixed, and dewormed and first vet check with vaccines will be included through South Valley Veterinary in Osoyoos or Kettle River Vet Services in Grand Forks. She is an adult probably over 4 years old in good health and litter box trained. Located in Rock Creek. Please pm or call or text 250-486-8356, or email [email protected]. a small adoption fee will apply.

***UPDATE***** Pippa actually "Breezy" has had a few interesting weeks. She was in a fatal car accident and when no one stepped forward for her, we took her in to the rescue. Her dad who was in Alberta at the time was unaware of her "adventures". He contacted us and showed us proof of ownership and explained the whole situation. Our thoughts and prayers go to the family and friends of the deceased who was in the vehicle and are happy that Breezy is reunited with her Dad. ********
This little radar ears "Pippa" is a 10 month old kelpie pittie cross who will be looking for a new home to start transmitting her satellite signals. She is a smaller girl about 40 pounds with energy to spare. She is vaccinated and will need to be spayed before her adoption can be completed. She loves people, other dogs, easily distracted from livestock even poultry and just wants to be around her peeps all the time. She is working on house and crate training but is so eager to learn. Her ideal new guardians are active and willing to continue to keep Pippa busy mentally and physically. Please pm us or email [email protected] for an application rehoming fee will apply.

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

07/15/2021

As of today, July 14th, 2021 Karl Ranch Sanctuary and Rescue will no longer take in owner surrenders or lost and found/injured animals from the area. I have decided to focus on the special needs dogs that I am approached from reputable rescues to offer help with and possibly rehome at some point or offer a place in my Sanctuary. I feel the community looks at myself/Karl Ranch as an animal control but since I receive minimal help (barely) from the community in terms of supplies, financial support and nothing in terms of municipal support, I feel it is necessary to refocus my vision. I sent out a post to see the response I received and since it was less than stellar I need to reevaluate my commitments. Especially during times of possible evacuation based on the fire risks etc. I cannot spend time away from my property to help one or two dogs to find their owners and possibly risk the lives of 10+ dogs plus cats plus my own horses and livestock and of course my own residence. If someone finds a lost animal you should call Kootenay animal control at : 250-443-1851 or the SPCA in trail or penticton. I am still available for boarding, training, nutrition consultations, nail trims, light grooming etc. Please call or text me at 250-486-8356 or pm or email [email protected].
Cheers and if there is enough community support to this message I may reevaluate but I need to prioritize my current commitments.

Just to let everyone know besides the regular rescue/Sanctuary animals I deal with, I help out the community specifically when people bring me found dogs i dedicate hours sometimes trying to find owners, in some cases keeping the dogs till owner's are found. I will always welcome donations of dog supplies/food, old blankets, towels, sheets, etc. Plus I am involved with any animal needing assistance, currently have an injured crow, and a baby mallard duck. Of course even any financial help is appreciated plus if anyone would like to donate at South Valley Veterinary Hospital in Osoyoos they will put towards any rescue animals. Also the wonderful folks at Westbridge Pet & Farm Supply will take payments towards my regular dog food bills. Any little bit helps and if you'd like to drop off any physical donations such as blankets supplies etc feel free to message me or call or text 250-486-8356. Also, at this time am looking for large dog crates as I prepare my evacuation plans for all the dogs. Some of my crates are little worse for wear. Thanks! Stay safe with all the threats of fire and heat. Cheers.

AARCS from Calgary approached me about taking Ursalina (🙄 now Aziza or Ziza) as she was shutting down in their shelter when they brought her and her pups off the reserve. They realized she looooves other dogs and is still apprehensive about people. So when they approached me I thought since some of the Sanctuary dogs are getting older and losing their roomies she would be a great floater dog to buddy up with other dogs but somehow she is in the house with my puppers which is fine as she's thinking this whole sleeping on couches and beds thing is pretty cool. I figured she might come around faster to people being exposed to us strange creatures on a regular basis. She is starting to approach me and willingly takes food from my hand and I've even gotten some licks on my toes when in bed. If you're wondering why I decided on Ziza it's because she reminded me of Azizi the hyena from Lion King. (Pic included). If you think you're dog(s) needs a playmate and you are interested in possibly fostering or adopting Ziza please message me or call or text Martha 250-486-8356. Ziza would not do well with livestock and needs a fenced yard until she's more comfortable with people. She is great for tiring any dog out as she tires out all the dogs in my house and is always good to play more. She would enjoy a home with a calmer situation while she becomes accustomed to living with her peeps.

So just update on some of Sanctuary animals. This is Atlas who came from a rescue in Calgary and they thought he would do well in a more rural setting. He had some resource guarding issues and fear of leash. I have been able to manage some of his resource guarding and the leash remains a large source of fear for him. That doesn't stop us on being able to go on walks. He is a sweetheart aside from these issues. If anyone is an experienced dog person who feels they can manage this special needs boy and does not have children around plus could enjoy Atlas without needing to leash him or try to travel with him until we're able to manage this behavior feel free to message me or call or text Martha at250-486-8356. He would do best if there were no other dogs in the home while he settles in. He seems fine with livestock and doesn't mind them. Best if they're fenced until we are sure of how he is with them. Would love to find him a foster home and if it's long term that's fine. All supplies are included and of course training.

Had a call from some wonder ladies who found this poor thing on the highway dehydrated and with injured wing. Since the SPCA'S in the area and SORCO wouldn't take it and would have just euthanized it they gave me a call. It's been a few days and happy to report this fighter is doing awesome! Hopefully will be well enough to be released soon. If not guess our Sanctuary residents will once again a completely new species. 🙄😍

So....Dante who came with me to Karl Ranch as an "unadoptable " because he would tolerate other folks as needed but would never allow anyone else to touch him besides myself has been diagnosed today with extreme hip dysplasia and spondylitis. He will enjoy his last days with his sister and I will keep him comfortable until he isn't. Hopefully he has a last few swims in his future. Electra offered him her favorite hedgehog squishy when we got back from the vet. The plan is to keep him comfy with pain meds and lots of yummy foods to make pooping easy. Another reason why I find pediatric spay and neutering so hard to accept. I understand the pet overpopulation but the medical studies of long term affects especially on joints is at this time proven. Whether it's the case with Dante, or genetics is unproven but being an 11 year old boy I still wonder...... it's a moot point right now because he will enjoy his last days to the fullest.

I took action to call for changes to the sled dog tourism industry. Current standards allow for dogs to be tethered for more than 23 hours per day. Will you join me in calling for change?
