We were very happy with all the boys we brought out today. Our Jr. Buck Taylor Made Ragnar was first under one judge and second under the two others. Taylor Made Dynasty and Taylor Made Empire were top of the line also. But I guess we can't neglect our phenomenal Saanen buck Capricorn View Arthur's Flash who took a clean sweep today!! He was champion under all three judges and Best Buck in Show as well under all three judges!!

Very sad day in the Taylor Made barn today.
We had to say good bye to a very special doe. Velvet was a permanent champion and a *M doe. This girl wasn't "just a goat", she was the matriarch of our herd and holds a special place in all our hearts. She was the first face to greet us every morning and the one that demanded her chin scratches first.
Her son Dynasty has made a huge impact on our breeding program and we are lucky to have a few daughters from her so we are thankful to have her genetics still working in our herd.
It's extra hard to say goodbye to the special ones, but we are so thankful for everything she gave to us and our herd.

Took a few moments to appreciate our resident Saanen buck, Capricorn View Arthur's Flash.
Pictured here in his working clothes it is still easy to appreciate the amazing strong top line, power and style he has to offer. Mike is 6'2" to give you a reference to the size of this awesome 3 year old buck! We are excited to see the babies he will give us this year, especially crossed on our gorgeous doe Pepperpot Ameteur Hour.

Utilizing your dairy goats for sustainable farming.....

With a smaller family farm where we don’t raise livestock on a commercial level, we are always looking for ways that our animals can sustain themselves. After all, there is only so many hours in a day that Mike and I can work off the farm to support our family, let alone all the animals on top of it.
We decided this year to raise some meat animals. We raised 6 Pigs and 125 Quail!!
Pigs were an easy decision… although I don’t think we knew what we had signed ourselves up for in the beginning. LOL
We have a constant supply of fresh goat milk which the majority gets dumped as we don’t have a use for a lot of it. It seemed such a waist to be dumping all that amazing milk our girls produce. We consume some of it, but cannot consume all of it. So the Pigs diet was 50% goat milk provided by our beautiful girls and the rest of their diet is made up of high quality pig grower rations, fresh grass and alfalfa hay. They also had a constant supply of all of our bread, fruit and vegetable kitchen scraps.
We have had the pigs since they were weaned, and we received them at around 65 pounds of weight. In just over three months our pigs gained over 280 lbs in weight and we were thrilled that our first three pigs yielded hanging weights of 282 lbs, 258 lbs, and 239 lbs!!!
It is a great feeling knowing that we raised these animals ethically and with our own and locally sourced feed. Our kids worked hard helping us to feed, clean and do any daily chores needed to raise these animals and I am so thankful for this experience and the lessons they learn that came with it.
Shipping day was especially hard for Josie but I am proud of the care and compassion she showed for these animals right to the end.
Today we finally got to reap the rewards of our work. We brought home our first crop of pork. Check out these beautiful cuts of meat that came from our hogs…. We can’t wait to taste it!!

Thank you to our goats who supplied our pigs with fresh quality milk, and for their kids; the profit we made from our sales will buy us enough hay to feed all of our livestock for the next year!
So while we wait for our quail and final hogs to be ready for harvest, we will enjoy our first batch of pork and be thankful for the animals that have put food on not only ours, but our friends and family’s plates, and have paid their way so we can afford to keep these animals that are such an important part of our lifestyle.

Let's talk about Whey!!!

Curds and whey is the generic name given to curdled milk, which separates into lumps of cheese called curds and a liquid called whey.

Did you know you can tell alot about the quality of your cheese and the health and diet of your animals based on the colour of your whey??
Do you know why cheese is orange???
Previously throughout history cows and goats were raised predominantly on grass pastures and not in barns or feedlots. These animals milk tended to be richer in colour from beta-carotene in the grass they eat. So, when the orange pigment transferred to the cow or goats milk, and then to the cheese, it was considered a mark of quality.

Have a look at the pictures of my whey during my cheese making from this year (first picture) and from last year (second picture). Notice the huge difference in colour? This year's whey is bright yellow while last years is milky colored!!

Last year we struggled to find quality hay for our goats. They were still fed a premium ration and grain diet, but the hay was not as lush and grassy as we would have wanted... This year we were fortunate enough to put enough gorgeous lush grassy hay in our barn for the year. We also started supplementing our milking does with high content alfalfa hay and soaked alfalfa cubes. On top of quality hay we feed a custom ration made specifically for our herd to provide a balanced diet to ensure our girls were getting everything they needed to look their best and most importantly milk to their fullest potential!!
Highly Yellow whey is a direct result of a rich, grass diet!!
Some sources suggest that extremely yellow whey can also indicate a high casien protein content in the milk.
It is desirable to have high casien content in your goat milk especially for cheese makers. Casien helps form large plum curds!! Casien is also very high in amino acids and is a desirable health supplement in human diets!

It just goes to show you.... you are what you eat!!! It's so important as a producer that we do our very best for our animals, because we expect a lot from our stock, so we need to feed them optimally to get the most out of them.
It's amazing to see the difference diet has made on our own herd. We have always prided ourselves on the quality of care we provide our animals, but it just goes to show you how important a quality forage is in a dairy animals diet.
The proof is in the whey!!! πŸ˜†

Exciting news!!
It's always nice to wake up to a message like this from the Canadian Goat Society!!
Our beautiful doe Herd of Gold Black Velvet has earned her *M on her last milk test with 20.31 points!! She is also a Permanent Champion. This doe has earned a place of honor in our herd the last few years proving herself to not only be beautiful πŸ˜‰ but a hard working member of the herd!
Her son Taylor Made Dynasty (by Haldibrook King Candy) is our current Sr. SIRE and is an integral part of our breeding program currently.
If you are interested in adding some Taylor Made Genetics into your herd please contact us today! We pride our selves in striving to produce quality animals that are versatile, beautiful enough to be a showstopper but hard working, quality milking animals!!
Congratulations Velvet once again for making us so proud to have you in our barn, and becoming a matriarchal figure in our herd!! πŸ’•
