Am I taking new clients? 😃

Well, I’m not not taking new clients.

I get this question regularly, because there were a couple of years when I was maxed out. And while business is fairly steady, I do now occasionally have a couple appointments available to whoever can fill them.

So, should you or a friend be looking for a groomer, feel free to send me a message! If I can make it work, then I will!

Hello friends!

The total solar eclipse is just around the corner, and just about everyone is ready to see the once in a lifetime event. We are seeing some mixed information about pet/wildlife safety.

Contrary to what some may read, the sun itself is not any more dangerous during the eclipse. The reason protective eye wear is recommended for humans (who wish to observe the eclipse) is because many of us will be staring directly at the sun that day, which is something we typically avoid.

For our pets, and outdoor wildlife, that day will be similar to any other day. Our pets don’t stare at the sun, so there is no need to keep them indoors on April 08 for any extended period of time. They may notice the change in temperature, but it is unlikely they will exhibit any unusual behaviour.

The eclipse can be more unsettling for birds. The dimming of the sky can mimic behaviour at dusk and during early storm formation, so some birds may demonstrate a wind-down behaviour and there may be less activity in the sky during the peak eclipse. Once the sky returns to normal, so does their behaviour.

If you are purchasing eclipse glasses, please make sure they meet these criteria. For additional information about the eclipse please see:
https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/safety/

For a list of approved solar-viewing goggles please see:

https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters

It is not safe to watch the eclipse through the lens of your smartphone - it can damage both your phone camera and your eyes. Try this instead:

Safe watching our friends!

“My dog hates going to the groomer. Should I be concerned?”

Not necessarily. We have all heard the terrible horror stories about some happenings at a grooming salon, but these incidents are rare. Your dog’s anxiety is most likely not related to any kind of abuse.

First we must consider, how often does your dog see a groomer? For a dog visiting the groomer every 6 weeks or less, their visit is just a normal part of life. A little trepidation is to be expected if professional grooming is not a routine part of your dog’s life.

Next, what are your emotions on grooming day? Dogs pick up on our emotions very easily. An anxious owner can create an anxious dog.

Also, sometimes the dog and groomer just don’t vibe well. This doesn’t mean the groomer or dog has done anything wrong. Have you ever known a doctor, teacher, or tradesman you didn’t “click” with. Sure you can work together, but it’s not your idea of a good time.

As well, perhaps there’s something in the environment feeding your dog’s anxiety. Is it a busy salon, with many dogs barking, lots of comings and goings? Is the salon in a basement, and your dog doesn’t like basements? Maybe there’s a fragrance or sound that triggers the trauma of some unknown event. It could be anything.

Last, maybe your dog just doesn’t like being groomed. That’s not uncommon. But if we go back to the first point, regular visits will help assure your dog that grooming is a normal part of life, and something that can at the very least be tolerated, even if it’s not their favorite.

If you have any worries, talk to your groomer. We may be an odd and sometimes quirky bunch, but groomers genuinely care and have your dog’s best interest at heart. 🥰

Have I ever mentioned how much I love Goldens? They are overall one of my favorite breeds. Sadly I don’t have one of my own, because oh so much shedding, but they’re so gorgeous, both inside and out. ❤️❤️❤️

Meet Kiko. Kiko is a special kind of dog, and a perfect example of why many groomers will suggest a “comfort groom” once your dog reaches a certain age. Kiko is old, very old. He’s blind, he has arthritis, and his vet suggested he possibly has some kind of doggy dementia. He also has an unusual amount of energy for his age. All those things combined make him very dangerous to groom. Not dangerous for me, but for him. There’s a lot of potential for injury. (Fortunately, he’s not aggressive.)
I expect he can see light, shadow, and some blurry shapes, but those limits mean he is afraid of anything coming towards his face. He also can’t see when he’s about to walk off a cliff, like the grooming table. (And he will walk off if I don’t have a hand on him at all times.) His joints are sore and stiff, making it difficult to maneuver his legs. And he will never settle, he’ll never understand what’s happening, and soothing words and touch have no effect on his restlessness. Special dogs like Kiko require a certain amount of patience and skill in the grooming salon. Our only option is a comfort groom. Short and shaved, including his face, and minimal scissor work, to get him comfortable as quickly and safely as possible.

Girl With The Dogs speaks a lot of truths in her videos! I, being a groomer that works alone, have to be very choosy with which large dogs I will groom. Safety is always a priority.
