If you pay close attention to the spine of the horse, you can see a postural change. Quite a difference for only 2 treatments on an unstarted coming 8yr old! Below we will explain what is happening here …
When the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae are severely misaligned for a long period of time, it can lead to significant issues, particularly affecting the strength and function of the back. The spine serves as the central support structure for the horse, and any misalignment can disrupt its natural biomechanics. This misalignment can stem from various causes, including trauma, simply messing around in the pasture, improper saddle fit, or even repetitive strain from poor riding practices.
As the spine becomes misaligned, it can result in weakened back muscles. The muscles surrounding the spine are responsible for maintaining posture and stability during movement. When these muscles are compromised due to misalignment, they may not engage properly, leading to a lack of support for the horse’s body. This can manifest as a “sway back”, also referred to as lordosis. This condition not only affects the horse’s appearance but can also lead to discomfort and pain, ultimately impacting its performance and quality of life. Keep in mind other misalignment throughout the body can also be a factor.
To address and prevent misalignment, it is crucial to implement a comprehensive care routine. Regular veterinary assessments can help eliminate any underlying issues to rule out. Additionally, ensuring proper saddle fit is vital, as an ill-fitting saddle can exacerbate misalignment and lead to further complications. Incorporating strengthening exercises and therapeutic interventions, such as chiropractic adjustments and massage therapy, this can drastically help in restoring proper movement and function to the spine and overall strengthen the back and prevent further swaying. By prioritizing regular maintenance, horse owners can enhance their horse's overall well-being, performance, and longevity.
