Today we celebrate Daphnée! As some of you know, this her last day of work at Russell Equine.

Over the last 4 years, Daphnée has made her mark through her commitment to providing the highest level of client care. Her compassion for both our patients and their owners was second to none. We are so grateful to have had her as part of the team and wish her all the best as she starts the next chapter of her career!

For anyone who travels to the US with their pups - new regulations coming into effect

Starting on August 1, all dogs entering the U.S. (including those that left the U.S. and are returning, and regardless of the country they are coming from) must be:
• healthy upon arrival
• at least 6 months of age
• microchipped
• accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt and required vaccination and veterinary documents.

Additional requirements may apply depending on where the dog has been in the last 6 months and whether or not the dog was vaccinated in the United States.

It’s vaccine time again!

In preparation for the upcoming show season many of our horses will soon be receiving their annual (or twice per year) vaccinations.

We vaccinate horses in this area for a number of different diseases depending on their lifestyle/exposure and other risk factors. Among the most important of these are Rabies, Tetanus, Eastern and Western Equine Encephalitis (EEE/WEE) and West Nile. Additionally for our show horses, vaccination for Equine Herpes virus and influenza are important and often required to attend most sanctioned events (often at a six-month interval).

This is Reggie. On Tuesday, Reggie was vaccinated for EHV-influenza, along with a few of his barn mates. Wednesday morning a few of the horses had a small, raised bump at the site of injection. This is a very common finding a day after vaccination, as any vaccine is designed to trigger an immune response. Often with that response comes a variable degree of soft tissue/muscle soreness at the site. (Remember how your arm felt after your COVID vaccine).

We routinely have clients asking if they can ride their horse the day of, or day after vaccination. Research has shown that light exercise the day or two after vaccination can help minimize some of this soft tissue inflammation- but strenuous exercise should be avoided.

Reggie’s barn mates were happy to go to work on Wednesday, but Reggie had a slightly more significant reaction to his vaccine. Most commonly we give vaccines to our horses in the neck with no negative side effects, but when a reaction is more severe, a sore neck can greatly impact a horse’s ability to perform their job, but also their ability to move around normally, and eat or drink if their hay or water source is on the ground.

Reggie only had to complain to his mom to get a little extra TLC and a few days off work, but it is important to monitor our equine friends in the days following vaccination to ensure they receive proper care in the event of an adverse reaction. Most commonly, treatment of this type of reaction involves monitoring of the horse’s temperature, administration of anti-inflammatory medication (systemically and/or topically) and ensuring easy access to feed/water sources. If you notice your horse displaying any sign of an adverse event (more significant than a small bump at the injection site) please reach out to your veterinarian so it can be recorded and potentially avoided or minimized in the future.

The benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risks, but we are always happy to alter vaccine selection and combination of vaccines to best suit you and your horse.

A 6-year-old mare in Ottawa, Ontario, was confirmed positive for Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) and was euthanized.

Many of the horses in our practice are vaccinated against this disease, but with warmer fall weather we are aware there may be increased exposure from mosquitoes carrying this virus. Please reach out if your horse has an unknown vaccination status or if they are overdue for their annual vaccines. ❤️
