⚡️⚡️WARNING: With the thunderstorms happening right now, many dogs will spook and bolt when they hear it, escaping their homes, yards or even taking the leash right out of their owners hands and running away. Some already have and the thunder's just begun.
Here are a few tips to help keep your dog safe today:
1) Keep your dogs on leash when you take them outside for a p*e, even if you have a fenced yard. Panicked dogs can easily clear a fence that they wouldn't otherwise think of jumping.
2) Attach their leash to their collar rather than a harness (a panicked dog can escape almost any harness), making sure the collar is fitted quite snugly. You can loosen it again once you bring your dog back inside. Or clip on two leashes, one to their collar AND one to their harness.
Note: If their collar can be pulled even partway over one of their ears, they can easily slip their head out of it if they bolt when you try to pull back on the leash to hang on to them.
Even better, use a snugly fitted martingale (aka limited slip) training collar to take them outside as those are impossible to slip out of when sized properly. To size it, when it’s pulled tight make sure there is no gap anywhere and that you can’t fit even one finger underneath it.
3) Hang on to the leash securely. I personally know dogs who pulled the leash right out of their owners grip when thunder or fireworks went off and bolted. In one case, the dog was found a day later and many kilometres from home after having crossed several busy roads.
4) Make sure doors and windows large enough for your dogs head to fit through are closed. Again, spooked dogs can bust right through a screen to escape. The rule of thumb is if your dog can fit their head through a gap, they can get the rest of their body through it, too. They’re flexible like that.
These are temporary precautions but may mean the difference between your dog staying home and safe or posted on ROAM - Reuniting Owners with Animals Missing and being looked for by a search party.
