Today is World Veterinary Day! We wanted to acknowledge the diligent work of our veterinarians here at Mission Ridge. We thank Dr. Takacs, Dr. Woods, Dr. Skrypnek and Dr. Havinga!

Some veterinarian facts:

βœ… The word "veterinary" comes from the Latin veterinae meaning "working animals".

βœ… Veterinarians are essential health workers.

βœ… They are important in preventing animal-to-human transmission of diseases such as rabies and Lyme disease. By working tirelessly to prevent and control the spread of these diseases, they can help keep people and animals safe.

βœ… Veterinarians treat disease, disorder or injury in animals, which includes diagnosis, treatment and aftercare.

βœ… Almost 80% of practicing veterinarians are females.

βœ… Vet students spend a minimum of 6 to 8 years in university. This does not include the hours of continuing education they have to complete each year.

βœ… Vets take an oath when they graduate medical school promising they will use their knowledge for the benefit and protection of animal health and welfare. Additionally, they solemnly swear to relieve animal suffering, advance medical knowledge, promote public health, and practice their profession with dignity, while abiding by veterinary medical ethics.

Tickety-Talk! Let's talk about ticks! ⏰πŸͺ³

Some parasites, including ticks have the ability to transmit disease to both you and your pet. These diseases can be difficult to treat, life altering, and potentially fatal. It is important to take preventive measures to protect your pet from parasites. πŸ›‘

Another segment of Wildlife Wednesday with Dr. Woods! πŸ¦β€πŸ¦…πŸ°

Dr. Woods recently had an interesting case with a young pigeon that had a spinal injury while at WILDNorth. Acupuncture was performed and it ended up walking again a day or so later! A second round of successful acupuncture was done to ensure full recuperation (last slide)! β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

The second side features a bald eagle that was admitted for lead poisoning. It was recovering well under WILDNorth's care, Dr. Woods and the team took some blood work to monitor its progress. πŸ“ˆ

The rabbit and grouse unfortunately had to be euthanized due to the severity of their injuries. Sadly, this is one of the sides of wildlife rehabilitation. Providing humane care for them is critical, even if that means euthanasia. πŸ˜’πŸ’•
