Hey! We know her!! ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿฅฐ

Our staff introductions are almost complete, but we definitely saved some of the best for last!

Today, we are introducing Dr. Jessica Woods, one of our amazing veterinarians who works with us on a contract basis. She has been involved with WILDNorth since 2009โ€”that's 16 years! Jessica's favorite parts of the job include the privilege of seeing Albertaโ€™s beautiful wildlife up close. She also enjoys learning about the natural behaviors of wild animals and adapting treatment plans to meet their specific needs. And, of course, her favorite moment is one we all shareโ€”releasing rehabilitated animals back into the wild, knowing they have been given a second chance. She describes it as "the best feeling in the world!" When asked about her favorite species, Dr. Woods said, "I really love them all, but my top favorites are North American Porcupines, Northern Saw-whet Owls, and Chickadees! I think chickadees are a very hardy (and adorable) Alberta songbird that doesnโ€™t get enough credit for their winter survival techniques!" Over the past year, she has also had the wonderful opportunity to provide acupuncture treatments to some of the animals at the Edmonton Valley Zoo!

Outside of her veterinary work, Dr. Woods is passionate about bird conservation and places stickers on all of her house windows to help prevent bird-window collisions. Her advice for those interested in working in this field is: "Wildlife rehab is both a challenging and rewarding profession that requires a lot of hard work and commitment. Take advantage of any volunteering opportunities availableโ€”every little bit helps wildlife". Dr. Woods is an exceptional veterinarian who brings a diverse range of skills to the exam table, helping us provide the best possible care for every animal at WILDNorth. We are so grateful for her compassion, kindness, cheerful personality, and years of dedication.

Thank you, Dr. Woods!

โš ๏ธ Important Health Update: H5N1 Alert for Pet Owners! โš ๏ธ

This information comes from a recent statement by Cornell University, regarding the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus, also known as avian influenza A or bird flu. While this virus primarily affects birds, recent cases have been reported in cats and other animals after consuming contaminated commercial raw food diets, unpasteurized milk, or had contact with wild birds and cattle.๐Ÿฆ

๐Ÿฆ  Symptoms to Watch For in Pets:

Loss of appetite
Lethargy
Fever
Neurologic signs (tremors, seizures, etc.)
Difficulty breathing
If your pet displays any of these signs, especially life-threatening ones like seizures or difficulty breathing, seek veterinary care immediately!

๐Ÿ›‘ Precautions to Keep Your Pet Safe:

Consider discontinuing raw diets, particularly those from unreliable sources.
Avoid raw milk and limit exposure to wild birds.
Consult your vet for alternative food options and more safety advice.
While H5N1 can affect humans, there's currently no evidence of human-to-human transmission. Stay informed, and protect your pets with the latest health updates.

Stay safe, and ensure your furry friends stay healthy! ๐Ÿพ

12/06/2024

With a heavy heart, we want to inform our valued clients that Dr. Kelley will be moving to Vermillion to teach the next generation up and coming veterinary technicians at Lakeland College. Her last day with us will be Tuesday December 31st.

If you would like to book an appointment with Dr. Kelley before her departure, please give us a call as soon as possible. ๐Ÿ“ž

Rest assured, all of Dr. Kelley's existing clients will be transitioned to one of our other amazing Veterinarians, and we will ensure that this process is as smooth as possible during this bittersweet time.

We would like to extend our heartfelt wishes to Dr. Kelley as she embarks on this exciting new chapter in her career. The petsโ€”and all of usโ€”will certainly miss her! We wish her the very best of luck in her future endeavors. ๐Ÿ’œ

Thank you for your understanding and continued trust in our care. ๐Ÿ’™
