Hey everyone, some of you know but not all that there are some changes coming to Karen Hart One On One Dog Groomer.
These last few months I have been doing a lot of thinking about this business and the direction I want to take my career in.
I started Karen Hart One On One Dog groomer in May 2020, in the middle of a global pandemic. I have faced a lot of challenges in the last year and some time. Challenges that have definitely made me stronger but others that have also taken a toll on me.
When December of 2020 rolled around, I made the decision to switch to private home based grooming to keep the business going as the shop I was working in was closing. And after another lock down I opened my doors in the new location as of February 2021.
I made the choice to move to home based grooming so I could keep going, as it was a very tough time to be looking for work. I have loved every minute of being a home based groomer, but that in itself posed a whole new list of challenges to overcome. Although I have done my very best to do what I can with whatever was thrown at me, it is at this time that I have decided to rebrand.
I will be closing down Karen Hart One On One Dog Groomer for the time being.
And I have been offered a position back in a Grooming Salon.
Although I wont be running the business myself anymore, I will still be offering the same quality one on one services you've grown to know and love. And yes I will still be Cage free, in my own separate room but also still focusing on hard to handle dogs and desensitization methods.
For now the Doors will remain open as I'm slowly closing down here at the house and making the transition to Ruffins Pet Store on Hartzell Road in St.Catharines!
I am very excited for this new chapter in my life, and to keep growing as a groomer.
Most importantly I hope to see all your familiar faces, so make sure to pop in and say Hi!
At this time Ruffins is expanding their store, so the exact move in date is not finalized. I wi

Let's talk about matting
Ive been seeing a lot of people online lately posting videos about going to the groomer and their dog coming out shaved.
Matting is a serious subject, and its something I see a lot of along with all other groomers. Some dogs require more upkeep than others. Some dogs matt so easily and others never. Coat type plays a huge role, dogs with fur still require brushing, but not as often as dogs with hair. While dogs with fur their coats can becoming impacted, dogs with hair become matted if not properly looked after. Just like if I dont brush my hair for awhile and if becomes knotted and tangled the same happens with our dogs. Matting left on dogs can become so tight that it can actually start to pull the skin away from the body. Air cannot travel info the dogs coat to the skin in order for the skin to breathe. This means your dog can start to have dry flakey skin in the form of dandruff. When left to long thats when it starts to pull the skin away. When removing the tight matts if they are too close to the skin, there is an increased chance for your dog to be nicked, or have skin irritation due to the coat being clipped off.
Whats the best way to avoid all of this?
Regular brushing and grooming. If you aren't sure if you've brushed well enough, you can do a comb test like you see here in my video. Run a comb through all parts of the coat, head, ears, belly, back, bum, and all 4 legs. If it doesn't get stuck, your dog won't need to be shaved. If it doesn't get stuck on an small area, your groomer might be able to save that area and keep the desired look. But if the comb isnt able to get through any part of the body. Shaving will always be the most humane option for your pet. From there once the coat is safely removed, I recommend start brushing the next day after your appointment. Even though the hair will be short and doesn't seem worth brushing. It 100% is! Brushing will help increase your bond with your pet and help them to be more comfort
