How Can I Prevent Dental Disease in My Pet?
The key to management of gum disease (for humans or pets!) is prevention.
As long as the surfaces of the teeth are cleaned frequently, the gums will stay healthy. Excellent oral health is maintained by daily oral hygiene. The gold standard is brushing. Daily chewing activities can also be effective in maintaining oral health. Daily use of products that have been awarded the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOCH) Seal will help to keep your pet’s teeth clean and the gum tissues and bone around the roots healthy.
VOHC recommends periodic veterinary examination of the mouth and teeth of your dog or cat. Many pets, particularly middle-aged and older cats and dogs, require periodic professional scaling in addition to on-going plaque control.
Regular use of products awarded the VOHC seal of acceptance will reduce the severity of periodontal disease in pets

Help us keep pets warm this winter.
Winter can be a harsh season in Canada. And, for unhoused individuals who are caring for a pet, keeping their furry best friend warm on cold days is sometimes a struggle. This is why Heart to Paws was created.

Until October 31st, visit a veterinary clinic near you to donate new or gently used pet care items such as sweaters, booties, blankets and more. Heart to Paws will then pick up, sort and redistribute your gifts to shelters across the country that allow families without homes to keep their pets with them.

1. When do dogs begin to lose their baby teeth?
Puppies begin losing their teeth around 12 to 16 weeks of age. By four months of age almost all pups’ deciduous teeth have been shed and many of the permanent teeth have already erupted and are in place.

2. Do dogs get cavities?
Cavities are rare in dogs. This is due to many factors including a relatively low sugar diet, differences in mouth bacteria, and the shape of the teeth. When cavities do occur, they can be treating the same way as human cavities. In severe cases involving tooth root exposure, endodontic procedures would be performed. Extraction of the affected tooth is required in certain cases. Another good reason to provide dental care for your dog.

3. How can I tell if my Dog has Gum disease?
Start by lifting your dog’s lips. If you see dirty or discolored teeth, see your veterinarian. This is likely tartar or plaque and is an early sign of imminent gum or periodontal disease. Next examine gums for any swelling or redness. Finally, smell your dog’s breath, a foul smell is usually associated with bacterial infection. If your dog exhibits any of these signs, see your veterinarian for help.

4. What Can I do to take care of my Dogs Teeth?
Make sure to provide your dogs with chew treats approved by the veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) to help reduce plaque and tarter. Take a look inside your dog’s mouth at least once a week to make sure everything looks and smells healthy. Try brushing, if your dog tolerates it. Try an antimicrobial oral rinse designed to kill pathogenic bacteria that can cause gum infection.

If you have any questions or concerns, you should always visit or call your veterinarian, they are your best resource to ensure the health and well-being of your pets!

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Today we remember all the fallen heroes, at 11 am we will have 3 minutes of silence.
