🐾 National Pet Obesity Awareness Day 🐾

Did you know that more than 50% of cats and dogs in North America are considered overweight or obese? While those extra pounds may seem harmless, or even a little cute, they can actually have a big impact on your pet’s health.

Why weight matters:

•Extra weight puts strain on joints, increasing the risk of arthritis and mobility issues.
•Obesity is linked to diabetes, heart disease, and liver problems.
•Overweight pets often have reduced energy and may not live as long as their healthier counterparts.

Signs your pet may be overweight:
•You can’t easily feel their ribs without pressing.
•They have little or no waistline when viewed from above.
•They tire quickly during walks or playtime.

How we can help:
Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best ways to improve your pet’s quality of life. Our veterinary team offers weight management consultations where we:
✔ Assess your pet’s current body condition.
✔ Create a safe, personalized weight loss or maintenance plan.
✔ Provide nutrition and exercise recommendations tailored to your pet’s lifestyle.
✔ Monitor progress and celebrate every milestone along the way!

If you’re unsure whether your pet is at their ideal weight, or if you’d like support in helping them reach a healthier one, we’d love to help.

📞 Call us at 905-688-1996

Together, we can make sure your pet lives their happiest, healthiest life for years to come. 💙🐾

Staff Pet Feature- Paulie & Sage🐱🐾

Meet our amazing Registered Veterinary Technician, Rachel's two fabulous felines, Paulie and Sage! 💕

Paulie is the mischievous one of the household, always keeping Rachel on her toes. He’s a true purr machine who even snores, and while he enjoys belly rubs, he only tolerates them for about 1.2 seconds before changing his mind. Paulie will happily work for catnip and is an absolute canned food fanatic. He’s not a fan of nail trims, but he’ll never turn down endless bum scratches. And although he sometimes picks on his sister, he makes up for it by sweetly accepting her head licks.

Sage, on the other hand, is the family chatterbox. She meows constantly to make her presence known and often surprises everyone with her random zoomies. Like her brother, she loves belly rubs, but she also has a unique (and hilarious) hunting routine. Rachel’s elastic bands become her “prey,” which she proudly carries to the water bowl or bathtub to “drown.” Sage is a Temptations fanatic and, most impressively, a brave and beautiful three-legged wonder who never lets anything slow her down.

These two keep Rachel entertained with their quirks, cuddles, and chaos, and we’re so glad to share a peek into their personalities with you! 💖

🐾 Sunday Safety Tip 🐾
Leash Safety 🦮

Keeping your pet on a leash isn’t just about following the rules, it’s about protection, prevention, and peace of mind.

Here are some important leash safety tips every pet parent should know:

🔗 Always leash in public
Even the most obedient dog can get startled or distracted. A leash helps keep them close and out of harm’s way.

🦴 Use the right gear
Choose a leash that suits your dog’s size, strength, and walking style. Pair it with a secure, well-fitted harness or collar (you should be able to slip two fingers underneath comfortably).

🚫 Skip the retractable leash (Flexi lead)
They might seem convenient, but they come with serious risks:
– They can snap, tangle, or extend farther than you can safely control
– The thin cord can cause burns, cuts, or even amputations
– A dog reaching the end of the leash can suffer neck or spinal injuries
– The braking mechanism can delay or fail, especially in emergencies

🔍 Check your gear often
Frayed leashes, worn clips, or stretched harnesses can break at the worst moment. Inspect them regularly.

✋ Never loop the leash around your hand
If your dog lunges, this can cause serious injury. Instead, hold the leash with a firm, controlled grip or use one with a wrist strap.

Stay safe and enjoy the walk! 🐶❤️

October is Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) Month! 🐱🩺🐶

This month we celebrate the incredible contributions of our Registered Veterinary Technicians – the skilled professionals who are the backbone of veterinary medicine.

Here at our clinic, we are lucky to have an outstanding team of technicians: Matt, Vanessa, Alison, Kierstyn, Rachel, and Amy. Each one of them brings unique strengths, knowledge, and compassion to their role, and together they make a tremendous difference in the lives of our patients and clients every single day.

🐾 RVTs are:
✨ Nurses – providing skilled patient care, monitoring recovery, and giving medications.
✨ Lab Technicians – running bloodwork, urine, and diagnostic tests.
✨ Radiology Techs – taking and interpreting X-rays with precision.
✨ Phlebotomists – expertly drawing blood from even the wiggliest of patients.
✨ Anesthetists – monitoring patients during surgery and ensuring their safety.
✨ Dental Hygienists – performing dental cleanings and assisting with oral care.
✨ Pharmacy Techs – preparing and dispensing medications.
✨ Educators & Counselors – guiding pet owners through treatments, nutrition, and preventive care.

And that’s just the beginning!

Our RVTs balance technical expertise with compassion and empathy. They comfort nervous pets, reassure worried families, and support our veterinarians in delivering the very best care.

💙 Matt, Vanessa, Alison, Kierstyn, Rachel, and Amy – thank you for wearing all the hats, every single day. You are the backbone of our clinic, and we’re endlessly grateful for your dedication, talent, and love for animals.

This RVT Month (and always), we encourage you to thank these amazing professionals who do it all for your pets. 🐶🐱🐾

September 30th is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡

Today, we take time to pause, reflect, and honour the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities.

This day is a reminder of the ongoing impact of residential schools and the importance of listening, learning, and walking together toward healing and reconciliation.

We encourage everyone to take time today reflect, support, to recognize the resilience of Survivors, and to commit to fostering understanding, compassion, and meaningful change.

Let’s continue to learn the truth, acknowledge the past, and work together for a future built on respect and reconciliation.

Fun Fact Friday: All About Conures! 🦜

️Conures are known as the clowns of the parrot world 🎭 They’re playful, goofy, and love to entertain.

They’re super social! Many conures form strong bonds with their humans and enjoy riding around on shoulders like tiny feathery sidekicks. 💚

Conures can live 20–30 years with proper care, so bringing one home is a long-term friendship! ⏳

They may be small, but they can be loud! 🔊 Conures have big personalities (and big voices) compared to their size.

These parrots love to dance and even “head bob” to music, some owners say their conures have better rhythm than they do! 🎶

Conures are smart and curious, which means they can learn tricks, play games, and sometimes even pick up a few words. 🧩

Many species of conure, like the Sun Conure, are incredibly colourful, living rainbows that brighten up any room. 🌈

🦜✨ Conures may be small, but they bring endless energy, laughter, and love into their families’ lives.

🐾 Ask the Vet: Why Annual Exams Matter 🐾

When life gets busy, it can be easy to put off your pet’s annual exam, especially if they seem perfectly healthy. But just like with people, pets benefit from regular preventive care, and those yearly checkups play a huge role in keeping them happy, healthy, and by your side for years to come.

Why once a year?
Pets age much faster than we do. In fact, one year for a dog or cat can be equal to several human years of changes in their body. A lot can happen in that time, and some health issues may be developing long before you notice any outward signs.

What happens at an annual exam?
Your veterinarian will do a full nose-to-tail physical exam, checking things like:
✅ Heart and lungs
✅ Eyes, ears, and teeth
✅ Weight and body condition
✅ Skin and coat
✅ Joints and mobility

This helps us catch early warning signs of conditions such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, dental disease, or thyroid issues, all of which are much easier (and often less costly) to manage when caught early.

Beyond the basics
Annual visits are also the perfect time to:
✨ Update vaccinations and parasite prevention
✨ Discuss nutrition, weight management, and exercise
✨ Address behaviour changes or concerns you’ve noticed
✨ Build a tailored wellness plan for your pet’s life stage

Why it matters
Even if your pet seems perfectly fine at home, many conditions are “silent” in the early stages. Regular exams mean we can catch problems before they become serious, ensuring your pet stays as healthy as possible.

The bottom line: Preventive care saves time, money, and stress in the long run, and most importantly, it helps your furry family member enjoy a longer, happier life. 💕

📅 If your pet is due (or overdue!) for their annual exam, give us a call today to schedule their appointment.

Look at that face! 😍

This is Sandy, and she completely stole our hearts when she visited us at Glenridge recently.

Her markings are so unique, her face is almost perfectly divided down the middle, with one side a bright orange and the other a deep black. Right at the center, the opposite colours meet across the bridge of her nose, leading down to her tiny black nose and making her look even more special. 🧡🖤

Sweet Sandy reminded us once again why we love what we do. Every little patient has their own story, personality, and charm, and we feel so lucky to meet them (and sneak in some extra cuddles along the way 💕).

If your furry friend needs care, we’d love to meet them too, give us a call at 905-688-1996! 📞🐾
