🐾 Case Highlight: Emergency C-Section for a French Bulldog 🐾

Last week, we had the pleasure of caring for Sky, a 5-year-old French Bulldog who presented to our hospital in need of an emergent cesarean section.

Sky was promptly assessed by Dr. Rahavi and our emergency team. Thanks to our dedicated staff, the procedure was a success! We’re happy to report that Sky delivered 7 healthy puppies, and both mom and babies are doing well. 💙

Emergency C-sections are especially important for brachycephalic breeds like French Bulldogs, who are at increased risk of complications during delivery. We're proud of the timely, expert care our team provided during this critical moment.

Please join us in wishing Sky and her new pups a smooth recovery and a healthy start to life. 🐶✨

☀️🐾 Summer Safety Tips for Your Pets! 🐾☀️

As the temperatures rise, it’s important to keep our furry family members safe and comfortable. Whether you have a curious cat or a playful pup, here are some essential summer safety tips:

🐱 For Cats:

🏡 Keep them cool indoors – Cats are great at finding shady spots, but make sure your home stays cool with fans, air conditioning, or open (but secure) windows.

🚫 Avoid hot surfaces – Don’t let your cat walk on hot patios or asphalt. Their paws can burn just like ours!

💦 Hydration is key – Make sure your cat always has access to fresh, clean water. Try placing extra bowls around the house or even using a cat water fountain.

🌿 Watch out for toxic plants – Summer blooms can be dangerous. Lilies, in particular, are extremely toxic to cats.

---

🐶 For Dogs:

🚗 Never leave them in the car – Even a few minutes in a hot car can be deadly. Always take your dog with you or leave them safely at home.

🌞 Exercise smart – Walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day. Check the pavement with your hand—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them!

💧 Keep water handy – Bring a portable bowl and water on walks. Dehydration and heatstroke happen quickly in summer heat.

🏊‍♂️ Supervise water play – Not all dogs are natural swimmers. Always supervise your dog around pools, lakes, and beaches, and rinse off any chlorine or salt afterward.

🧊 Offer cool treats – Frozen dog-safe fruits like blueberries or DIY pupsicles can help them beat the heat.

Stay safe and enjoy the summer with your pets! 🐶🐱☀️

🐾🎉 It’s Veterinary Assistant Appreciation Week! 🎉🐾

This week, we’re shining a spotlight on the incredible individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure every pet and every client receives the best care possible—our Veterinary Assistants. 💙

Veterinary assistants are the heart and soul of any animal clinic. From the moment you walk through the door to the final tail wag or gentle goodbye, they’re there—holding paws, cleaning kennels, prepping for surgeries, monitoring patients, supporting our veterinarians and technicians, and bringing comfort to both pets and people.

They work long hours, face emotional moments, and still manage to greet every furry friend with kindness and compassion. Whether it’s helping a nervous pup feel safe or making sure our tools are spotless and ready for the next procedure, vet assistants are essential to everything we do.

To our amazing veterinary assistants:

Thank you for your patience, your resilience, your attention to detail, and most importantly, your love for animals. 🐶🐱 Your dedication doesn’t go unnoticed, and this week (and every week) we want you to know how deeply appreciated you are.

Meet Chief, a sweet 9.5-year-old mixed breed pup who came into our emergency hospital not feeling like himself. His mom noticed he was lethargic, not eating, and had diarrhea — all signs that something serious might be going on.

After a thorough examination and diagnostic testing, Chief was diagnosed with Anaplasmosis, a tick-borne disease that affects both dogs and humans.

🦠 What is Anaplasmosis?

Anaplasmosis is caused by the *Anaplasma* bacteria, which is transmitted through tick bites—most commonly the deer tick (also known as the black-legged tick). It can cause a variety of symptoms in dogs, including:

- Lethargy
- Loss of appetite
- Fever
- Joint pain
- Diarrhea or vomiting
- Sometimes even neurological issues

🛡️ How Can You Prevent It?

Tick prevention is the key! Here’s how you can help protect your pet:

- Use a veterinarian-recommended flea and tick preventative year-round
- Check your dog for ticks after outdoor activities, especially in wooded or grassy areas
- Keep your yard clean and trimmed to reduce tick habitats
- Talk to your vet about annual screening tests for tick-borne diseases

Thanks to prompt care and the love of his mom, Chief is already feeling much better and on the road to recovery! 💙 He’s a great reminder of how important it is to stay vigilant with tick prevention—especially as the warmer months approach.

✨Veterinary Receptionist Week is here, and we’re taking a moment to recognize the real MVPs of our ER team — our veterinary receptionists!✨

In emergency medicine, every second counts — and before our medical team even steps in, it’s our receptionists who are already at work: answering urgent calls, triaging situations, preparing records, and greeting families with compassion (often during some of the scariest moments of their lives).

They are multitaskers, crisis-calmer-downers, emotional support pros, and the ultimate communicators — all while making sure every pet and person gets the attention they need.

💙 From all of us at Port City Emergency Veterinary Hospital, thank you to our reception team. You make the chaos manageable and the care possible.
