🐾 What is Swimmer’s Tail? 🐶💦

Also known as limber tail, cold tail, or rudder tail, swimmer’s tail is a painful condition that can affect dogs after prolonged swimming, vigorous exercise, or even exposure to cold weather or water.

🌀 It often looks like this:

Your dog’s tail is limp, hanging down, or sticking out just a little before drooping

They may yelp or act uncomfortable when you touch the base of the tail

It can appear suddenly—often after a fun day of swimming or play!

🏖️ While it sounds scary, the good news is that swimmer’s tail is usually temporary and resolves with rest, warmth, and sometimes pain medication.

🐕 If your dog’s tail suddenly looks limp and they seem uncomfortable, give us a call. We’re here to help them wag again! 💙

As the weather is getting warmer, it’s important to recognize the symptoms of overheating in your pets. Take a look at the most common signs that your pet may have been exposed to too much heat. Be extra cautious if you have a breed of dog or cat with a short nasal passage, for example Pugs, Boston Terriers, British Shorthairs, or Persians. Call us right away if you think your pet has become severely overheated.

🐾💙 Dr. Alison Messina doesn’t just care for your beloved pets—her compassion extends to all creatures, big and small. Today, she found a tiny, abandoned baby gull in need of help. Without hesitation, she made sure it got the care it needed, contacting wildlife rescue so the little one can be rehabilitated and released back into the wild where it belongs.

It’s just one more example of the big heart behind the stethoscope. 🕊️❤️ Thank you, Dr. Messina, for always going above and beyond!

While these vibrant flowers make for picture-perfect scenery, it's important to remember that lupins are toxic to dogs — especially the seeds.

🐾 Lupine poisoning can cause a range of symptoms, including:
🐾 Loss of appetite
🐾 Breathing difficulties
🐾 Frothing at the mouth
🐾 Nervousness
🐾 Loss of coordination
🐾 Lethargy
🐾 Convulsions
🐾 Jaundice

Everyone, meet Cooper — the most adorable little pup who came in for his puppy vaccines at Avenue Animal Hospital! 💉🐶

This sweet boy melted hearts the second he walked through the door. With those puppy eyes and wiggly tail, it’s safe to say Cooper had the whole team swooning. 😍

He was such a brave boy and, of course, got lots of snuggles and treats for being such a superstar! 🌟
