Alfie's first grooming! It's not every day that on a puppies second visit to the groomers that a full haircut can be achieved.
This little guy, Alfie, handled his first big haircut like a champ. He's on a 3-4 week schedule with me so he can build confidence and learn that grooming can be fun and not a scary thing.

Starting puppies early with grooming is crucial for several reasons.

*Habituation: Getting puppies accustomed to grooming from an early age helps them become comfortable with the process, reducing stress and anxiety later in life.
*Grooming sessions provide an excellent opportunity for socialization, helping puppies develop essential social skills and trust with their human caregivers.
*Regular grooming helps prevent matting and tangling, especially for breeds with long or curly coats. An early start ensures a healthy coat and reduces the risk of skin issues.
*Trimming puppies' nails from an early age helps prevent overgrowth, cracking, and related health issues. I recommend every 2-3 weeks for nail maintenence
*Grooming sessions help puppies become comfortable with being handled, making future veterinary exams and procedures less stressful.
* Early grooming creates a strong bond between puppy and owner, fostering a lifelong connection built on trust and care.
* Early detection of potential health issues, such as skin irritations or ear infections, can be identified during grooming sessions, allowing for prompt veterinary care.

Remember, start with short, gentle sessions and gradually increase duration and intensity as your puppy grows and becomes more comfortable with the process.

What does this dog groomer do on some weekends? Oh, you know....get up at 4/4:30am to be on the road for 6am to take a couple of my dogs to a Scent Detection Trial in Fredericton....2 days in a row. Sounds like fun eh? Lol

I started training my puppy (Helen) in Scent back in September, and Hush started training this past February.
Both dogs earned some titles this past weekend! Hush earned his Instincts title, and qualified in his novice interior search.
Helen earned her Instinct and her Novice Scent Title.

What the dog is expected to find is a single drop of Wintergreen oil on the end of a q-tip. That odor is hidden among boxes, a 100-200sq room and also a 300-400sq foot outdoor space. The dogs have anywhere from 2-4 min to find the scent and indicate on the scent.
Since Helen passed all the novice components, she moves up to Open level where she will need to find wintergreen as well as pine.

This is a fun sport that helps build confidence and gets your pets brains active.

Dog shows, also known as conformation shows, are events where dogs are exhibited and judged on their physical characteristics, movement, and temperament. The purpose of a dog show is to evaluate breeding stock and promote the improvement of specific breeds. Dogs are divided into classes based on breed, s*x, and age, and are judged against a breed standard.
The most well-known dog show is the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, which has been held annually in New York City since 1877. Dog shows can be a fun and exciting way to learn about different breeds and see the unique characteristics of each dog.

This handsome dude is attending his first show tomorrow for the Golden Retriever Specialty in Moncton NB, so he needed to get his coat carded and trimmed up.

Tripp is from Nikmore Golden Retrievers in Quispamsis, NB. He's a lovely 11 month old boy who's full of life and love for everyone.

Currently there is an 8 week wait for grooming appointment spots (middle of July).

I try to remember to message everyone after their appointment with another spot but I'm human and sometimes forget. So please reach out ASAP if you don't hear from me.

The Rough Collie is a beloved breed known for its stunning appearance and charming personality! They have a thick, double coat that's medium to long in length, with a soft, dense undercoat and a rough, thick outer layer. They also come in a smooth variety, if the long coat is a bit intimidating for the average pet owner.
Their fur is typically sable, tri-color, or white, with a distinctive white blaze on the forehead. Their piercing brown or blue eyes add to their endearing expression. Rough/Smooth Collies are highly intelligent, loyal, and protective of their family, making them excellent companions for active families.
They require regular grooming to prevent matting and tangling, but their beautiful coat and loving nature make them a joy to behold!

Featured here is Abby, the Rough Collie. She's waiting to be picked up, and hanging out with her little friend Helen.
I'm extra sad to see Abby go home today because she's moving to another province 😭. She's such a sweet girl and her owners are such great people. I will miss them greatly.

The Australian Shepherd (Aussie) is a highly intelligent, energetic, and versatile dog breed that excels as a herder, companion, and athlete! They typically weigh between 30-50 pounds and stand 18-23 inches tall. Their medium-length coat comes in various colors and patterns, and they often have piercing blue or brown eyes. Aussies are known for their:

- High energy and drive
- Strong herding instincts
- Exceptional intelligence and trainability
- Loyalty and devotion to their family
- Agility, speed, and nimbleness
- Love for physical and mental challenges

Overall, Australian Shepherds are a popular breed for active families, ranchers, and dog sports enthusiasts, and thrive with regular exercise, mental stimulation, and attention.

Please meet Murray! He's a 2 year old Aussie and he gets super excited to come every 8 weeks for his spaw treatments! Murray loves to swim all summer so frequent grooming sessions are crucial to help prevent hot spots, and their coats from becoming knotted up.

The Poodle is a beloved breed known for its signature curly, non-shedding coat and adorable appearance! They come in 3 sizes (Toy, Miniature, Standard), but all share a common trait: a thick, soft, and voluminous coat that requires regular grooming. Poodles come in a lot of solid colours such as Black, Blue, Cream, Silver, White, Apricot, and Brown. They originally came as parti- poodles, like my Standard Bird. She's a Blue & White. Poodles do not come in Merle or carry Merle, so just be aware of those advertising Merle poodles, they are mixed breeds.

Poodles should be groomed every 4-8 weeks, and more frequently if they have 1.5"+ of coat.
What I love most about the poodle is that their coats can be fluffed, clipped and poofed into a multitude of different lengths and styles.

Poodles are highly intelligent, active, and loyal dogs that excel in obedience, agility, scent work, therapy work and as loving companions. Their friendly, outgoing personalities make them a popular choice for families and individuals alike. With proper care and attention, their beautiful coat and charming nature make them a joy to behold!

I'm fortunate to own 3 poodles at the moment, one of each size. I did own 5.

Let me introduce you to my poodles who are freshly groomed this week 🖤🐩🐾🐩🐾🐩

The West Highland White Terrier (WHWT) is a small, friendly, and energetic dog originating from Scotland.
This breed is one of my Top 4 favorites to groom.

They typically weigh between 15-20 pounds and stand 10-11 inches tall at the shoulder. Their short, dense coat is white in color, and they have a compact, sturdy build. Known for their bold and curious nature, WHWTs make great companions for active families and are often described as loyal, playful, and affectionate.
They require regular exercise and mental stimulation to prevent boredom and destructive behavior. With proper care and attention, they can thrive as a loving and entertaining addition to many households!

Pictured below is Finley, the 5 year old Westie.

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, affectionately known as "Tollers," is a fun-loving breed that embodies enthusiasm and energy!

Their coat is medium in length, water-repellent, and feathered, with a striking red or orange hue.
Males are 18-21 inches tall, 45-55 pounds; Females being 17-20 inches tall, 35-45 pounds.
The breed has an athletic build, are agile, and nimble, with a bushy tail and webbed feet

Tollers are playful, mischievous, and always up for an adventure. They require regular exercise and mental stimulation to prevent boredom.
They are highly intelligent and trainable, but can be stubborn at times.
Devoted to their family, but may be wary of strangers. They love human interaction and enjoy cuddling and playtime.

This breed are natural retrievers, with a strong instinct to chase, swim, retrieve and enjoy a lot of water activities.
Fun fact; the breed is known to "toll" around the waters edge to distract the ducks from the hunters in their boats.

They are quick learners, but may require creative training approaches, thriving on physical and mental challenges, such as agility and obedience.
Generally healthy, with an average lifespan of 12-14 years.

Overall, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers are a delightful breed that bring joy and excitement to their families. Their playful nature, intelligence, and loyalty make them a wonderful companion for active families or individuals.

The Golden Retriever is a beloved breed known for its friendly, loyal, and gentle nature. I groom so many Golden Retrievers and have a bit of a soft spot for the breed.

Goldens should have a thick, double-layered, and lustrous coat, with a golden hue ranging from cream to dark gold
Males should be 23-24 inches tall, 65-75 pounds and females 21.5-22.5 inches tall, 55-65 pounds.

Golden Retrievers are renowned for their warm, welcoming nature, devoted to their family, which makes them great companions.
Patient and kind, making them an excellent choice for families with children.
Highly intelligent and easily trainable, but they are a Sporting Breed, so finding a good outlet for them to use their brain is ideal. This breed can excell in sports such as dock diving, Sprinter, Agility, CaniCross, scent detection and tracking.
They require regular exercise to maintain physical and mental well-being.

This breed is adaptable to various living situations, from apartments to homes with yards

With an average lifespan of 10-12 years, sometime longer, it's best to seek out an ethical, preservation breeder if you are thinking of adding one of these gems to your household.
This breed are known for hip and elbow dysplasia, canine obesity, cataracts, diabetes, ear infections, mast cell tumors and a few others.
A great breeder will OFA health test all their breeding dogs to help produce the healthiest puppies possible.

Overall, Golden Retrievers are a popular breed due to their loving, friendly, and loyal nature, making them an ideal addition to many families.

If you have been coming to my salon for the past year, you would have noticed a little lamb like looking dog hanging out and greeting some of you when you arrive.
More and more clients have been asking about this strange looking breed and I love getting to share it with them.
I personally became intrigued with this breed (Bedlington Terrier) almost 19 years ago while in grooming school. I saw one at a dog show and said I need that breed in my life some day. Fast forward 13ish years later, when I bought my first Bedlington Terrier from a wonderful breeder in Ontario, ISpy Bedlingtons ( Bonnie Nelson).

Bedlington Terriers are indeed amazing dogs and here are some reasons why:

🐾Their unique appearance: Their distinctive lamb-like appearance, with a curly coat, makes them a standout breed. It's very soft, and linty feeling.

🐾 Intelligent and trainable: Bedlington Terriers are highly intelligent and respond well to positive reinforcement training, making them a joy to train. My Bedlingtons have done an abundance of sports and activities such as: trick training, Sprinter, Barn Ratting, CaniCross, Dock Diving, Conformation, Obedience, Agility, and Scent Detection.

🐾 Loyal and affectionate: They bond strongly with their family, providing endless love and companionship.

🐾 Energetic but not hyperactive: Bedlington Terriers have a moderate energy level, requiring regular exercise but not excessive amounts. This is great when you just want to have a couch day. They will chill and sleep with you all day, but if you would like to go on a hiking adventure, they are taking the lead!

🐾 Adaptability: Bedlington Terriers thrive in various living situations, from apartments to homes with yards.

🐾 Low shedding: Their curly coat requires regular grooming but sheds very little, making them a great choice for those with allergies. Their coats will also mat easily so frequent visits to a grooming salon is a must.

🐾 The breed comes in a handful of colours, including Blue, Liver, Sandy, Blue/Tan, Sandy/Tan, Liver/Tan.
When born, the Blues are black, and Sandy/Liver dogs are a beautiful Chocolate Brown. As they mature and grow, their coats will lighten in colour.

🐾 Playful but not destructive: Bedlington Terriers love to play, but they're not prone to destructive behavior when left alone. My two are fabulous when left alone in the house, but they will dig holes in the yard to search for vermin....it's a Terrier thing.

🐾 Generally healthy: Bedlington Terriers have a relatively long lifespan (12-14 years) and are less prone to major health issues compared to some breeds. I have even heard of some Bedlingtons living to 16 years old.

🐾 Rare breed charm: With their unique appearance and friendly nature, Bedlington Terriers have a special charm that's hard to resist!

Here is some general history and purpose of the Bedlington Terrier 🐾🐑

History:
- Originated in England in the 1800s
- Bred in the Northumberland mining shire of Bedlington
- First identified as a Bedlington Terrier: Piper, a male dog born in 1825
- The American Kennel Club (AKC) formally recognized the Bedlington Terrier in 1886
- The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) recognized the breed in 1963

Purpose:
- Originally bred as a working-class dog to dispatch vermin like rats and other rodents
- Used by miners, nail makers and other workers
- Poachers used this dog to hunt wild animals like rabbits and foxes
- Later became a valued breed for its charming appearance and valued as a show dog and companion
- Today, they are lively, loyal companions that love doing activities with their families

Miss Phoenix is a newer elite member to NVS Salon. She's an Aussie/Poodle mix which means she has a very high maintenance coat.

This year we started her back on regular spaw treatments every 6-7 weeks to keep her skin and coat in the best shape possible. Having two types of coats, non shedding and shedding, results in the coat matting faster and easier than if it was just a low shedding/"non shedding" poodle coat.

Consistency is key to have your dog looking and feeling their best. Phoenix is a nervous girly but with each visit, she's gaining more and more confidence. Nervous dogs are not pushed past their threshold, so some times we have to say "good enough for today". This way, the pet to groomer bond can strengthen and trust begins to build.
Grooms aren't always going to be perfect, but if the dog leaves clean and happy, thats a win in our books.
Phoenix actually engages in snuggles after her grooms and will play bow with me. Success!

My puppy Helen also enjoys being salon guests "emotional support sheep" during their visits 🖤🐾🐑

Caicos here has such a unique name for a Havanese! It's a nod to the beautiful Caicos Islands in the Caribbean, which suits a breed that originated in Cuba.

This devilishly handsome dude rocks his Burberry accessory as if he lives in LA. Turning heads everywhere he goes. Caicos is treated to a pawdicure every 3 weeks to keep his feet happy, and groomings every 6 weeks to keep his luxury looking hairstyle in tip top shape. Looking this good takes work 😜

Phoebes spaw experience consists of a luxurious and pampering treatment designed specifically for her and her coat type! Upon arrival, she is greeted with a warm welcome, a soothing home like ambiance, calming sleep music and a relaxing scent.

The experience begins with a couple of baths, using only the highest-quality shampoos and conditioners tailored to her coat type.
Next, a rejuvenating massage helps to ease any tension or stress. A refreshing facial scrub and head massage is a fan favorite!
Finishing the bath off with a warm towel wrap makes Phoebe feel like a cozy little burrito 🥰

A thorough brushing, combing and blowout follow, leaving her coat soft, shiny, and super plush!

Next is the haircut portion to trim up those adorable features, leaving Phoebe looking bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

To complete her indulgence, a paw-dicure and nail trim ensure that Phoebes paws are pampered and polished. A spritz of calming spray and a mini play /photo session wrap up the experience, sending Miss Phoebe home feeling like the most relaxed, radiant, and regal pup on the block!

OhMyDog my brain is fried!!

Spent the entire day in Moncton at Paws N' Noses taking the Double Coated Practical and Written exam through CPPS ( Canadian Professional Pet Stylist). I want to first thank Becky Thibault for allowing me to take her sweet boy Otto with me as my test dog. He was the best boy 🥰🖤🐾

Thank you to Jackie Cormier for opening your salon for the testing and congrats on your Master scores (stunning grooms you did today). Thank you Angela Forrester and Jenn Sinclair for being fantastic certifiers!

I passed the Double Coat exams with Master Scores (100% and 90%). Then I decided WTH and took the Masters written. Holy f**k that was a lot. 553 questions....2 hrs...and go. 🤪😳😦😦 I was 3 points shy of a Masters score but still a pass. I will retake that one this year.

Helen (my bedlington terrier) tagged along to be used as a test dog for my friend Tamara Currie for her Bathers test. So proud of them. Helen did amazing being handled by a complete stranger and Tamara did a wonder job bathing and drying that tricky bedlington coat.

Congrats to my other friends Kyla Jardine and Nicole Mackenzie on your grooms/tests. Well done ladies 🥳

With 185 breeds recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club, it's hard to say you can't find one purebred that wouldn't fit your lifestyle.

I'm always available to help you search for an ethical, preservation breeder for a purebred you are interested in.
But remember.....these responsible breeders won't have puppies available all year round. Some may only have 1 or 2 females and breeders do NOT control when those females come into season OR if that planned breeding will take. So have patience. An amazing relationship with an excellent breeder is worth the wait in gold.

Hello friends!

The total solar eclipse is just around the corner, and just about everyone is ready to see the once in a lifetime event. We are seeing some mixed information about pet/wildlife safety.

Contrary to what some may read, the sun itself is not any more dangerous during the eclipse. The reason protective eye wear is recommended for humans (who wish to observe the eclipse) is because many of us will be staring directly at the sun that day, which is something we typically avoid.

For our pets, and outdoor wildlife, that day will be similar to any other day. Our pets don’t stare at the sun, so there is no need to keep them indoors on April 08 for any extended period of time. They may notice the change in temperature, but it is unlikely they will exhibit any unusual behaviour.

The eclipse can be more unsettling for birds. The dimming of the sky can mimic behaviour at dusk and during early storm formation, so some birds may demonstrate a wind-down behaviour and there may be less activity in the sky during the peak eclipse. Once the sky returns to normal, so does their behaviour.

If you are purchasing eclipse glasses, please make sure they meet these criteria. For additional information about the eclipse please see:
https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/safety/

For a list of approved solar-viewing goggles please see:

https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters

It is not safe to watch the eclipse through the lens of your smartphone - it can damage both your phone camera and your eyes. Try this instead:

https://www.safeshot-viewer.com

Safe watching our friends!
