Imagine being cozied up on your favorite warm fleece blanket in your home, the only home you’ve ever known. Your human comes and scoops you up and loads you up in a carrier. We must be going to the vet, you think. That is always a scary adventure, but we will be back home soon, you tell yourself. Except that’s not where you go… You get taken out of the carrier and put in a metal cage. Then your humans leaves!
They will be back for me soon, you think to yourself. I’ll be back in my cozy bed soon. You wake up chilly from the metal cage and drift back to sleep thinking of home. Days pass and your human doesnt come back. Weeks pass and still nothing. You start to lose hope and get sadder by the day. Your usual calm and happy demeaner shifts to fearful and sad.
You lash out in fear. Leave me alone, you hiss at the stranger reaching for you! You’re NOT my human. They add a red “Caution” sign to the outside of your metal cage you’re in. They listen to your hiss and interact with you less. You get sadder. Less and less people pay attention to you. They always look and say something about you “not being friendly”.
They don’t know me, you think to yourself. You continue to hold onto a little glimmer of hope that one of these days your human will walk back through those doors. That you will go back home and cozy back up on your favorite warm fleece blanket. That you will give your human head butts for love again. That you will chirp at them in the morning excited to see them open their eyes again for a fresh new day. That you will cozy up on their lap and purr, content with life as you had always been.
Can you even imagine?!?!
Please consider the ENTIRE life of a pet before getting one. Cats can live up to 20 years, sometimes a bit longer. Animals have feelings. Many animals shut down in fear when surrendered/dumped in shelters. Please consider THEIR lives when getting a pet, not just what is convenient for you. Don’t be a selfish pet parent.
