that another year is nearing its end. What a year it has been. In the last few months I have found that small businesses are struggling more than ever before. Some of my bills have gone up 20%! The scary part is that it doesn't look like there is any relief in sight.
My youngest son is in sports and every year we are armed with the task of fundraising. This has always been a stress point for many businesses and the need to say yes. I know how many letters I get on my desk asking for donations all the time and it seems like we always ask the same businesses. It would however make sense if those asking, would also support those businesses, wouldn't it? Yet here I find myself looking at gift baskets at sporting events and seeing Starbucks, Tim Hortons and Walmart gift cards being shared.
I once heard someone say that if you take care of your community, your community will take care of you, and I agree. Over the years we have been able to help so many different organizations from hockey, hospital foundation, safe society, mamas-for-mamas and most recently, with your generous donations, Second Harvest food bank. It is possible to help because of you, our clients. Over the last few months we have found ourselves in a scary economic climate and as a small business we are going to ask for help. After all, we cannot raise our prices, especially by 20% like big corporations do. For us to continue to have a positive impact on our community I would like to ask for your help.
Here are a few very easy ways to help:
1. Please leave us a five star Google review. Leaving any small business a positive review helps us to be seen by those looking for the services and products that we offer. A positive review shows Google that we are a valuable part of the community and will allow more people to find us. It also shows potential clients that we are who we say we are.
2. Please like, comment and share our posts on Instagram and Facebook. By sharing you help the algorithm (I know…..) to show our content to more people. This way you can very easily have a huge impact on any small business.
3. Please consider purchasing a gift certificate from us for a loved one. If you are in the market to purchase skincare, please consider a reputable small business with science based products before you support a big box store.
4. Before you buy from a box store of a big corporation like Walmart, maybe go to On Alex or Bella’s and see what they have to offer. Before you buy your teacher’s coffee gift cards from Starbucks or Timmy’s, maybe go support Pink Cherry, Stillfoods Bistro, Anvil or Ecotreats. These are the people that support our local kids activities. It is the least we can do.
5. Sign up to their newsletters (if they have one) and share that with friends and family.
6. If you don’t know where to start and you don’t know about the businesses in our community, I would urge you to follow Shuswap Shop Local on Instagram. You will see new businesses and know what is happening in and around town.
Remember that small businesses are the heartbeat of every community. We hire and support local families and we try to help the local economy as much as possible. Small businesses are dependent on your support, this year more so than ever.
If you find it in your heart to help in any or all of these ways, please do. I am asking on behalf of all our small businesses. We need your love and support.
Thank you for your continued support over the last 10 and a half years. We appreciate all of you very much. Remember, when you shop from a small business, someone is doing a happy dance. Let us all commit to help our local businesses.
With much love and gratitude

.. hoping to do a little happy dance in the coming months!
