What is āHABā?
HAB is the acronym for HUMAN/ANIMAL/BOND.
This story is the epitome of just that!
A month ago, I got a call from a very frantic cat owner by the name of Becca MacDonald. Herself and a friend (they are both from Windsor) had rented an Airbnb in Port Franks.
For those that donāt visit this area behind McPhearsons restaurant on 21, it is a forested area with seasonal cottages interspersed with permanent homes, and rentals mixed in.
Becca wanted to take along her best friend GOOSE, her cat.
Let this be a subtle reminder, 1st of all to ZIP TIE carriers, and to remember that most cats arenāt fancy about long car rides, and sure enough, Goose shifted his weight, out pops the prongs, and there goes Goose!
So I went up to meet Becca and Ryan, by this time Goose had already been missing a couple of days.
They informed me that they had seen Goose, in the ivy covered hill, but he wouldnāt come, however, they were pretty sure where he had ran to.
Thankfully, they had walked around the area and had talked to a couple of people, so I explained that we canāt trespass, we must have permission to set up traps and cameras. Here is where my ānew teamā came inšā„ļø.
I talked to the gentleman across the road, who called the owner of the property, oddly, also a resident of Windsor.
Karen, we canāt thank you enough for opening your heart and property to us for the last month!
So, I set up, and with explicit instructions, and Ryan on my camera, to keep the volume up! And keep the phone next to your ear.
Sure enough, Goose showed up, along with a couple of other cats, and then Momma raccoon.
Unfortunately, the food was in the wrong place, Momma raccoon set it off, got trapped, and Goose saw it!
Trust me when I tell you, animals that witness others being trapped, know what that trap does, and now Goose was having nothing to do with it.
To complicate matters, their stay at the Airbnb was over, they had work commitments, but we had to keep food going to keep Goose in the area, so I brought up my 48 inch TruCatch that I use on dogs.
Trapping is a patience game, and the pet will dictate when they are ready, not us.
So now we are in a bit of a pickle, because we are far away, and in steps Vicky.
Vicky lives there full time, but also had other commitments, but bless her heart, she went over when she could, and added more kibble.
Eventually, I also brought up my 42āTruCatch as well, we had to get Goose, and we werenāt giving up!
Becca was by far, one of the most dedicated cat owners I have ever seen! But also remember, you must stay calm!
Animals smell your adrenaline, and if you are upset, they smell that and hide or run.
So began ātrainingā Goose to go into bigger traps.
Thank you to both Laura and Laurie from Bluewater Motel on 21ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø
Your hearts were on your sleeves and you were soooo good to Becca, who trust me, was past exhausted, driving back and forth from Windsor, myself going up almost every day, sometimes twice a day.
We finally got Goose going in, but he wasnāt going to the back of the traps, and this is when Devine intervention stepped in.
Last night, when Becca went to refresh the food, Goose was waiting several yards away. Becca stayed calm and was able to lure him to a can of tuna, he allowed her to pet him, and pick him up, but, as she started to walk, he wrestled free, and ran back into the woods.
We were trying to keep a schedule up to get him into a routine, and the miracle happened this morning!
I texted Becca, to see when she was going to get there, she had slept in, but Goose was waiting for her to be fed!
Once again he backed off into the bush so Becca put a bowl at the edge, and Goose came out to eat!
He actually FOLLOWED Becca to the trap, she was able to pick him up, and put him in her carš„¹š„¹, only problem, carrier is outside the carš.
I told her to hold on tight, I was on my way!
So we got Becca in, got Goose, up front, I was able to get the carrier in the back, Becca got him in, we zip tied it shut, and it was finally over!!!!
After 4 weeks, Goose is going back home to a warm bed!
Thank you to the owner of MaPhearsons restaurant for that can opener! And for always allowing posters of missing pets, thank you to Karen, Vicky and Dave, residents of Port Lambton, it ALWAYS takes a village!
Becca, you were tenacious, and I more than applaud you for your dedication!!!
It may have taken longer than we wanted, but itās over!
Thank you to the vet that took Goose in immediately for the once over, and removing 5 ticks!
Thanks to poor Maria, who is always on my cameras, and they must drive her insane beeping all night!
I canāt express how much work Becca put into getting Goose back.
Everyone, letās all welcome back Goose!
