Like the majority of animal rescues, Cat Chance is a rescue run entirely by passionate volunteers. That means this page, messages, texts and phone calls, trapping, fostering, caring for, trips to the vet, runs to London for spays/neuter clinics, food drives, fundraising, marketing, outreach is all done by people who have full lives of their own-- jobs, families, other volunteer work, community service, housework, child care, social lives and pets. We fit this work in because of our love of animals.
Lately, we've been finding a lot of time has been spent answering questions about cats we have in foster homes. Please understand that we are thrilled to find perfect homes for the cats we have put so much time, love and resources into. Our volunteers can spend hours messaging and chatting with potential adopters. Our fosters will have potential adopters in their homes, introducing cats to people. Each one of us gets so excited at the thought of a cat or kitten or two moving on to a new loving home. Yet after these potential adopters indicate that they are excited for a particular cat, we've been hearing things like, "I have to check with my partner," or "I'm not sure our family is ready to adopt yet," or we just get ghosted. It's heartbreaking. It's frustrating. It's burning us out.
So we are going to try a new method for the adoption process moving forward. We will still answer your questions, give you our best recommendations for cats to fit your situation and family and get excited with you at the thoughts of the perfect match. But before moving on to the virtual visit, we will collect a $50 deposit that will go towards the cost of your adoption. If, after discussing the possible cats and meeting one that you click with, then filling out your application, you change your mind and decide not to adopt, your deposit will go into our cat care fund.
We hope you understand the need for this small change. We encourage you to discuss the possibility of getting a cat with all your family members prior to messaging us. And please, don't ghost us if you've changed your mind! Have the courtesy to let us know what's going on.

While it takes a crew to get a successful TNR completed, for this last one, as with many in the past, we want to give a special shout out to our amazing friend Steve Watson. Steve regularly drives our bunches to and from EVAH, often making extra stops to pick up and drop off kitties. Not only is he an expert driver, Steve is also an expert with cats and EVAH. He knows who needs pain medications and who doesnโt. Everything is always so organized and he is always unflappable!!! Steve, THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts!โค๏ธ
We were back at it this week! More TNRing and although we have more work ahead of us we managed to spay and neuter 14 cats since our last update. Thatโs 14 cats that will not be producing kittens! We had one stinker of a mom we wanted to catch. Lisa is her name. Lisa is a busy lady cat ๐. Lisa gets smart when itโs time for tnr and does the disappearing act. Lisa, if youโre reading this , you have unfinished business with Cat Chance. We also had one escapee, innocent enough, he was right at home. We think he could be collaborating with Lisa because heโs great at being invisible when itโs time to get to the clinic! We were so close, we had him and Bingo he was goneโฆโฆโฆ.and Bingo is his name-O by the way! Soon Bingo.
We will be continuing on as appointments allow and one is right around the corner! Thank you for all of your support and care for the cats.

For kittens to become adoptable, we must "socialize" them โ convince them that we're their friends. Learn more about taming feral kittens for adoption below.
It's ! ๐๐๐๐๐ Kittens aren't born tame. Why? Cats are both predators and prey, and kittens in the wild must be ready to survive on their own by 8 weeks of age. Practically from birth, they are keen to learn which creatures pose a threat. As young as 3 weeks, kittens will fiercely spit and hiss to defend themselves from any unfamiliar creature.
For kittens to become adoptable, we must "socialize" them โ convince them that we're their friends. Kittens of nursing age (under 6 weeks) are very easy to socialize, but it still takes some effort, even if they're bottle-fed orphans or have a tame mother cat. We must reinforce our role as nurturers with gentle care, feeding, and handling in a safe, quiet environment. We also have to introduce the kittens to new people so they'll learn to trust humans in general, not just the one who's feeding them.
A feral mother will teach her nursing kittens to fear humans, but please don't take them from her too soon! Mother's milk gives kittens their best nutrition and immunity. Mother cats are also natural experts at guiding kittens through the weaning process, which can be tricky for humans. Whether trapped outdoors or growing up indoors, kittens must be 6โ7 weeks old and actively eating solid food before leaving mom. They are still easy to socialize at that age, so no need to "kitnap" them from an attentive nursing mother. Next week we'll talk about trapping and taming 6โ8-week-old kittens.

We are looking for a little help. There is a very large colony weโd like to TNR before the size doubles , triples โฆand beyond. There are 21 adults and an estimated 35 kittens. There are cats that need an antibiotic shot, one who needs to have his leg looked at and we need everyone spayed and neutered! If we can reach our goal of 3200.00 we will be able to spay and neuter all of the adults and some of the kittens before summers end. Almost all of the cats and kittens will be tnrโd which means theyโll be spayed and neutered and go back to their home at the colony. Due to the shortage of adoptions and increase of returns, surrenders, lack of spay/neutering everywhere, shelters and rescues are packed full. Everyone is overwhelmed. This is how quickly that kitten given away for free can turn into a disaster. Without spaying and neutering itโs never a rescue and the problem gets worse. Letโs work together and stabilize this colony. Once we have two tnr rounds done, we will do this again in the fall to complete the kittens. All of the cats will receive a rabies shot and flea treatment/revolution and of course , a tipped ear! No donation is too small. So you trapped that cat. Now what? The biggest mistake newbies make when trapping a cat is to trap it, and then go looking for help. HUGE mistake โ for many reasons. โข MOST important โ what if that cat is lactating? Sheโs got babies out there who will die if you keep her too long โ but how long will it take for you to find some help? Appointments are hard to come by these days, and a vet at a private clinic is going to charge full price โ can you afford it? โข Do you have a place to hold this cat while you are looking for help? More than once we received emails with this exact scenario โ "I trapped this cat, can you take it?โ No, because we are not a shelter or rescue โ our members who trap hold the cats THEY are trapping in their own homes. If you are trapping, you need to expect YOU will be caring for this cat while you find help. โข Do you know how to take care of a cat in a trap? How long will the cat sit in that trap, without food/water or a place to pee/poop? โข You want to get it fixed โ have you already made an appt? If not, it may be weeksโฆ Appt FIRST โ then trap. โข What is your plan for that cat? If no one will take it, are you going to bring it inside and try to socialize it? Will you be releasing it to live where you trapped it? Shelters, Rescues and independent Rescuers are up to their eyeballs in cats โ what will you do if no one can take the cat? Please โ donโt trap without a plan. You may think you are helping the cat, your intentions are good โ but you need to think it out BEFORE you take action. Exceptions to this would be a cat in distress โ he was hit by a car, heโs lethargic/obviously ill, heโs dyingโฆ yes, trap/capture that cat and get it to a vet. But when you have time to wait โ stop. Itโs #mondayvibes and weโd like to know if youโve thought about donating to us, but havenโt quite got around to it yet. Perhaps this little 'tail' will inspire you to help us help others. This is about a very handsome ginger tom-cat, who was rescued, at the beginning of February, by one of our wonderful supporters, Elise. Elise allowed this little man to stay in her barn and shelter from the cold. However, two weeks later, the cat showed up injured and bloody, and she called us and he was quickly taken in. He was named Owen Sound, due to his unique โmeowโ. Owen Sound is friendly and has a very nice temperament, which leads us to believe he is a stray, who lost his way or was dumped. We took Owen Sound to Forest Veterinary Clinic last week to be neutered and to have his head and leg injuries looked after. He is now with his foster mum, Katy, and is doing really well. Heโll be available for adoption once heโs had time to acclimate to indoor life and his little body has healed. Heโs a beautiful boy. It's #ThankfulThursday and this little guy is thankful to Elise for calling us to come get him out of the cold. Elise cared for him for two weeks, but when he appeared with an injury, she called us. Elise kindly cleaned up the wound first. Thankfully, it's nothing serious and he just needed some care and TLC . He spent the night at our Director's home and then went straight to Katy's home to be fostered. Once he's neutered and socialised, we're sure he will make a wonderful pet to someone, because he's so friendly and affectionate. 'Owen Sound' he's been named, due to his funny little meows.
