Yesterday, Kairo and I went to Costco to get some supplies for the business and a few groceries.

If you've ever been to Costco, you know you go in for a few things and end up spending WAY more than you intended to. That was the case for us yesterday.

Costco is a busy store, lots of people, and kids, and it's congested and tight in some spaces, with everyone else moving around and shopping.

It's also one of the MOST difficult places to be a service dog handler, and it's hard on our dogs too, just because of the sheer volume of people, distractions and everything that goes with it.

It took Kairo literal thousands of hours of public access training before we even attempted this store, just due to the difficulty.

Now, Kairo can handle it with relative ease, but still, I'm not a fan of the environment for his sake.

And yet. People still bring pets in here..
It's not a pet friendly space.

It's an insult for us when we see people bring dogs in that have no public access, because it's a slap in the face for us when we worked every single day of his life in order to earn the right to have Kairo do the job he loves to do.

Stop bringing your pets places they don't belong.

Stop pretending to be something you're not

Our dogs have gone through intensive training to be here, and we STILL find it difficult at times.

Be responsible. Don't put your dog somewhere they don't need to be, or they aren't ready for.

Someone will get hurt. Leave your pets at home.

Honoring Our Veterans This Remembrance Day

Today, Kairo’s K9s Training joins all Canadians in pausing to honor the bravery, commitment, and sacrifice of our veterans.

Their dedication and sacrifice have helped shape our nation and protect the freedoms we hold dear.

On this Remembrance Day, we remember those who served and those we have lost.

Lest we forget.

With heartfelt gratitude,
The Kairo’s K9s Training Team

Meet Jager!

This young pup was decently adopted from the Saskatoon SPCA and he is absolutely THRIVING in his new home!

This wonderful family was referred to us by Frankie's mom, and we are so glad they did because this sweet boy is absolutely incredible 🥰. He has an absolutely amazing temperment and is very fun to work with!

Jager learned the basics of leave it, place, and heel, and we taught his wonderful family how to continue his socialization process, so he can be exposed to new sights, sounds and people and have positive associations with them as he continues to grow.

Jager’s family is so dedicated and eager to learn, and he will continue to thrive as we support his training and enrichment going forward.

We live you

Welcome to the Kairo's K9s family

As a parent and dog trainer, I hate the term "Nanny Dog" - here's why.

No dog, no matter how well-trained or gentle, is “bomb-proof” or “perfect” when it comes to interactions with children.

The term nanny dog has been floating around for a few years and causes a lot of issues.
There's a belief that some breeds are better or bomb proof around children - the reality is much more nuanced than this.

Historically, no breed has ever been referred to as a "Nannydog" - and the term originally surfaced in the early 70s to help shelter workers rebrand some breeds to help clear out the adoption floor. There is no record of any breed being referred to this way prior to 1971

Here's the reality.

Even the friendliest dogs have limits, and children may unknowingly cross boundaries that can make any dog uncomfortable or reactive. To keep everyone safe, constant supervision is essential whenever dogs and children are together.

Here are some essential rules for children around dogs:

1. No Hugging or Climbing:

Children should avoid hugging or climbing on dogs, as it can make dogs feel trapped or anxious.

2. Respect the Dog’s Space:

Dogs need a safe place to retreat when they want to be alone. Teach children to respect the dog’s bed, crate, or designated area.

3. Avoid Startling Movements:

Sudden movements, loud noises, or approaching a dog from behind can startle them, potentially leading to defensive reactions.

4. Don’t Approach Eating or Chewing Dogs:

Dogs can become possessive of food, toys, or treats. Teach children not to reach for a dog’s food or toys when the dog is eating or playing alone.

5. Understand Canine Body Language:

Teach children the basics of dog body language, like recognizing signs of stress (yawning, lip licking, or moving away). Knowing these signals helps children learn when a dog needs space.

6. Gentle Petting:

Show children how to pet dogs gently on their back or side and avoid sensitive areas like the face, tail, or feet.

7. Ask for Permission:

Children should always ask an adult and the dog’s owner before petting or approaching any dog. Not all dogs are comfortable with strangers, especially kids who may not know how to interact properly.

8. Avoid Rough Play:

Rough play, like grabbing, hitting, or wrestling, can make dogs feel threatened or overexcited, increasing the risk of a nip or bite.

For Parents:

It’s our responsibility to guide and supervise these interactions to ensure both the child and the dog feel safe and respected. Dogs can’t communicate the same way we do, so it’s up to us to recognize and prevent situations that could lead to stress or miscommunication.

By teaching children these safety rules and closely supervising interactions, we can foster a respectful, positive relationship between kids and dogs.

Meet Everest!

Everest was recently adopted from Saskatoon Dog Rescue and she is adapting well to her new home!

Her brand new family wanted to get a jumpstart on her training, and they contacted us as soon as they brought her home!

Everest is a young lady who needs some help with obedience, learning to ignore other dogs, and some confidence boosting in her new home

We went and assessed and did one lesson so far, and Everests leash skills and dog neutrality alongside Kairo CGN have improved drastically as we taught her family the fundamentals of our training system, focusing on how Everest feels and emphasizing what she is doing correctly through positive reinforcement.

Everest's progress has been nothing short of incredible, and we are so proud of this amazing family as they learn to understand her and put her needs first.

Meet Oakley!

Oakley was referred to us by Prairieland Service Dog Training because they felt we would be better suited to help!

Oakley is a barrier reactive boy, and that means he gets very big feelings when he feels pressure on his leash or thinks he can not interact or move in the way that makes him feel comfortable!

So he makes himself loud and puts on a big show to ask people and dogs if they can give him space!

No problem, dude, we understand completely!

We got right to work, changing up his equipment and giving him some training so he understands that a little leash pressure means, "Hey, come see me!" And also introduced some marker words to let Oakley know exactly what gets this good boy a treato!

We gave this wonderful family some homework to address some of the underlying issues, and we will see them again soon!

We love you, Oakley! Just remember. There's no shame in owning a reactive or fearful dog, and you certainly aren't alone.

At Kairo's K9s Training , our goal is to teach owners like Oakley’s family how to work with the dog in front of them!

Our programs are designed to help you and your dog feel more comfortable as a team and build a solid foundation of communication to help you understand each other better!

Looking for help with your dog? Check us out online at www.KairosK9s.ca or email us at [email protected].

We are so proud of our clients for stepping up to help the dogs they love.

Bravo.

As a handler, I am very open about my medical conditions that require Kairo's assistance.

But, I am the exception to the rule, not the norm. I am comfortable enough to share my diagnosis with the online community, and I will occasionally answer questions from the general public.

It's important that people understand. This is not normal. In fact, in the service animal community- it's considered taboo to discuss my disabilities so openly.

Most handlers want privacy, respect and discretion, and it's important that just because you see someone like me online sharing my story so openly, that we don't expect or demand other handlers to share their diagnosis or story.

Legally, a handler is not obligated to share their diagnosis, nor do they need to produce documents that share the diagnosis either.

In closing, if you see a handler, asking questions like: "what's your diagnosis?" Or stating that we are "lucky" to have our K9s with us is extremely disrespectful.

Most of us would trade our dogs for our health in a second, if the possibility existed.

Handling a dog in public is not something we enjoy.

Please leave us in peace to go about our day and remember.

Our dogs are not an invitation for a discussion

Kairo has been keeping a close eye on Christopher as we deal with some family law matters.

While we were successful in our application, and once again, the courts ruled in our favor.

Christopher has been feeling the effects of the increased stress, leading to some additional medical issues that Kairo has indicated its time for Christopher to take a small break.

Due to this, we will be closed for the remainder of today as we protect his health and listen to Service Dog Kairo's warnings.

Christopher will be unavailable until tomorrow.
We apologize for any inconvenience, but it's important we listen to Kairo and give Christopher the opportunity to recover and rest.

We stand alongside Christopher as he continues to put everything on the line for his son, and we are so proud to see him continue to succeed in his fight.

Training a dog is far beyond the basics of sit, laydown, and leash manners.

It's a lifestyle change, making sure your dog is happy, fulfilled, and doing the things they are bred to do.

Our goal is to help dog owners develop the skills they need to understand and work with the dog they have in front of them and help them reach their goals by putting the dogs' needs first.

We believe that by empowering owners to learn and understand, we can create long-lasting relationships between families and their dogs

And that is when the change can happen.
Together, as a team.

Pretty boy Achilles is back in session with Kairo's K9s Training as we continue to work with his obedience at a high level and work on reactivity training with dogs!

Achilles learned the "place" cue and how to apply the basics of distance duration and distraction to improve his basic cues and behavior!

This boy LOVES to train; so keeping him mentally enriched and busy is a fantastic way to help him stay happy and focused!

Achilles adores his trainer and is happy to show off his owners' hard work and determination to be a well-adjusted and well-rounded canine!

Fantastic work, - your progress is your own accomplishment to claim. And we are so proud of you!

has joined forces with us at Kairo's K9s Training to work on puppy manners, basic obedience, and socializing!

Marley is a lovely lady. At just 4 months old, she is a bundle of energy and excitement and love.

Very biddable and driven, she was excited to show her Mom all the wonderful things she was capable of as our trainer showed her some basics with positive reinforcement training and a little love 💕

We will be doing a lot of work with her as we teach her and the family obedience, puppy protocol, and to bring out Marley’s best side ❤️

We love her and we can't wait to work with her some more!
