We know brushing our pet’s teeth is the best option for dental home care, as the mechanical motion of removing plaque/tartar works the best, but there are alternatives. The first option is dental chews/treats. If you decide to buy dental chews always ensure they have the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) seal somewhere on the front of the container. VOHC recognizes products that have met a pre-set standard for reducing plaque and calculus off our pet’s teeth. You can also find these seals on some dental diets. These kibbles are formulated to be harder and larger to help pull off on the teeth & promote chewing. Water additives are always a good option for dental home care & need to be changed out daily. It is always recommended to have the water additive as an option for pets to drink if they choose but also have a bowl of normal water. Last, but not least we have dental rinses/sprays. These can always be applied to gauze and rubbed on the pet’s teeth/gums.

If you have any questions about dental home care for your pet please do not hesitate to call us at 306-668-4223 🦷🐾

Introducing tooth brushing to your pet is an important step in maintaining their oral health. Start gradually to help them become comfortable with the process. Here’s a simple step by step approach:
1. Start Slow: Begin by getting your pet used to having their mouth touched. Gently lift their lips and massage their gums, rewarding them with treats and praise.
2. Introduce Toothpaste: Use a pet-safe toothpaste (never human toothpaste) and let them taste it to get them familiar with the flavor. Most pets enjoy the taste, making it easier to transition to brushing.
3. Use the Right Tools: Use a soft-bristled pet toothbrush or a finger brush, designed for pets, to avoid irritation. Start brushing with small, gentle strokes on the outer surfaces of their teeth, focusing on the back teeth where plaque builds up the most.
4. Keep Sessions Short: At first, brush for just a few seconds, gradually increasing the time as your pet gets more comfortable.
5. Be Consistent: Try brushing your pet's teeth daily or at least a few times a week. Consistency helps keep their teeth healthy and prevents plaque buildup.
6. Reward and Praise: After each session, give your pet a treat and plenty of praise to reinforce positive behavior.
With patience and positive reinforcement, brushing can become a regular part of your pet's grooming routine!

When caring for your pet's dental health, it's essential to use safe toothpaste and toothbrushes specifically designed for them. Human toothpaste contains fluoride and other ingredients that can be harmful if ingested by pets. Pet-safe toothpaste, on the other hand, is formulated to be swallowed without any adverse effects, typically made with flavors that appeal to pets, like poultry or peanut butter. Additionally, a toothbrush with soft bristles made for pets helps prevent injury to their sensitive gums and teeth. Regularly brushing your pet's teeth with the right tools can prevent plaque buildup, gum disease, and other dental issues, promoting overall health and a fresher breath. 😺

February is Veterinary Dental Health Month. This month is aimed at raising awareness about the importance of oral health for pets. Just like humans, animals can experience dental problems such as plaque buildup, gingivitis, and even tooth loss, which can lead to more serious health issues if left untreated.

By dedicating a month to educating pet owners, Veterinary Dental Health Month helps to prevent these problems before they start. It encourages responsible pet care by highlighting the need for routine dental check-ups and proactive treatment to ensure pets live longer, healthier lives. Regular dental care not only improves your pet’s quality of life but also strengthens the bond between you and your furry companion. 🦷 🐶
