Did you know Dog Lice can be a problem in Saskatchewan?
Dog lice can't transfer to people or other pets and your dog doesn't have to touch another dog to get them. You or your dog only need to step on a dropped egg while you're out on a walk. Eggs hatch on your dog and the lifecycle is two weeks. This means they can reproduce quickly and cause your dog much itching and discomfort. In extreme cases, it can cause some dogs to be anemic.
The medications you can purchase through your vet for fleas and ticks also work for lice so if your dog is already on it they are protected. If your dog has lice please see your veterinarian for medications for treatment. Please also let your groomer know. Most salons have protocols in place to try to prevent the spreading of lice.

We all love to get out during the summer but please remember a few safety tips for your pets.

Lake Water is not drinkable in most of Saskatchewan's lakes and rivers. This includes ingestion while fetching toys from the water. Always carry safe drinking water with you.

In addition to water safety please make sure your pets don’t lick the sand off of their feet, this can cause an intestinal blockage and can become life-threatening quickly.

Avoid the hotter hours of the day to prevent heat stroke or your dog drinking water without your knowledge in an attempt to cool off. You should also never take an overheated dog into cold water, this can cause a stroke or seizure. They should be cooled off slowly and safely.

Pets should be rinsed off with tap water after being in the water to help keep the lake and river water bacteria from causing skin issues such as bacteria infections and hot spots. Rinsing or bathing them removes excess salt and minerals that are not safe for your pets that they may ingest when licking themselves.

Just a reminder since I've seen a lot of people walking their dogs during the day this week when we have heat warnings. Dogs coats protect them from sunburns but they are not designed to be out in the heat and get heat stroke quicker than most people. If you think about the wild ancestors they only hunted in the early morning and late evenings during the warmer months while spending their days in a cool den.

Private 1 to 1 grooming means your dog is groomed when it is dropped off and picked up once the groom is complete. This means your dog is usually the only one at the salon at the time of their appointment. This is great for dogs with anxiety, puppies who are just learning the process and senior dogs who may prefer to have a quieter environment for their spa time. Dogs only stay for the duration of their groom which is generally 45 min for small dogs to 1.5 hours for medium dogs, depending on the size of the dog and coat condition.

It's that time of year again. Little blood-sucking bugs are out and about. Here is a natural repellent that works for ticks, lice and mosquitos. Please ensure your essential oils are 100% pure, preferably organic. Please remember this is for dogs only. Cats can get very ill from essential oils, even when diluted to this degree.
