This week's heartwarming story features the incredible Sougy! 💙🐾

Found with severely deformed front paws, Sougy's journey took a turn for the better when her amazing soon-to-be foster parents rallied for her care. After initial surgeries, she found herself in a shelter, but her dedicated fosters stepped in, describing her as the sweetest, kindest dog with a hilarious love for rolling in the grass and giving the "talk to the paw"! 😂

To give Sougy the full life she deserves, they turned to VCA Canada Vancouver Animal Emergency and Referral Centre. Thanks to the power of , a second surgery removed problematic pins, giving Sougy a new lease on life! 🎉

Now, this sweet girl is ready to roll (and run!) into her best years. Let's celebrate Sougy's resilience and the incredible people who never gave up on her! ❤️

April is , a great time to ensure your beloved furry companions have the year-round protection they need against this serious disease.

Heartworm disease is spread by infected mosquitoes, and even with our "four seasons in one week" Canadian weather, those pests can make an unexpected appearance during warmer spells.

Consistent, year-round parasite prevention is the most effective way to safeguard your pet's health.

Meet Cookie, this week's hero! This little five-year-old Yorkshire Terrier came to our VCA Canada Como Lake Veterinary Hospital team in a lot of pain, struggling with bladder stones. Imagine how uncomfortable he must have been!💔

His owner was understandably worried, but Dr. Mo Hasiri and our amazing team of RVTs and VAs jumped right in. We did an ultrasound and x-rays, and found multiple tiny stones blocking his urethra.😔

We gently put him under anesthesia and used a urinary catheter to move those pesky stones. It was such a relief to see him able to urinate more easily! We also sent the stones for analysis to figure out the best way to help Cookie long-term.

Thanks to our program, we were able to cover part of the cost of Cookie's treatment, easing the financial stress for his owner.

Cookie's now resting comfortably at home, feeling much better-a real happy tail ending!

Meet Bryn, this week's story.

She is a sweet 3-year-old Labrador Retriever who's been a part of our VCA Canada Harvest Hills Animal Hospital family since she was a puppy! 🐾

Unfortunately, Bryn had been facing ongoing health challenges due to a unique situation from her puppyhood. She was battling persistent urinary tract infections and discomfort, but her family wasn't able to fully provide her with the care that was needed.

That's where our amazing community came in! Thanks to the icredible efforts of our Paw it Forward program, and working with her wonderful family, Bryn was able to receive her surgery to live a happy, healthy, confortable life! ❤️

🍀 Happy St. Patrick's Day 🍀

We hope you're planning a fun and festive day filled with green treats and good times. But remember to keep those festive treats and drinks away from your pets.

This is especially true for items like chocolate "gold" coins, which are tempting but incredibly dangerous for dogs. Even small amounts of dark chocolate can cause serious health issues. And while we might enjoy a festive drink, alcoholic beverages should be kept far away from our canine companions.

Here's some tips to avoid a "shamrock shake"-up this St. Patrick's Day:

💚 Keep all chocolate, especially dark chocolate, and other candies well out of reach.
💚 Ensure all alcoholic drinks are stored safely and spills are cleaned up immediately.
💚 Be cautious with decorations like tinsel, ribbons, and small items that could be ingested.
💚 Some plants and flowers used in decorations can be toxic to dogs. Do some research to be sure your festive plants are safe.
💚 While you might want to share your holiday snacks, remember that many human foods are not safe for dogs.

If you suspect your dog has ingested something harmful or is showing any signs of distress, such as vomiting, lethargy, tremors, or unusual behavior, don't wait for a "wee bark" of trouble – give us a call right away!

All it takes is seconds for your dog to swipe a piece of chocolate or swallow a cigarette butt off the ground.

As veterinary professionals, we frequently encounter cases of , often with preventable causes. With approaching, and many pet owners engaging in activities like or , it's a timely reminder to be extra vigilant.

Here are some poisoning signs pet owners should be aware of:

🤢 Gastrointestinal Distress: Persistent vomiting, diarrhea, or changes in stool or urine.
😴 Neurological Symptoms: Lethargy, tremors, or seizures (⚠️seizures are a medical emergency⚠️).
💨 Respiratory Changes: Difficulty breathing or rapid panting.
🤤 Other Indicators: Excessive drooling, changes in appetite, or unusual breath odor.

We encourage you to familiarize yourself with common household toxins, especially those used during this seasonal period, and take proactive measures to safeguard your pets.

If you think your pet has ingested something, or you observe any of these symptoms, you contact your VCA Canada veterinarian or emergency animal hospital immediately.

We're thrilled to share an incredibly uplifting story this week, featuring a special cat named Miracle!🐱

Miracle first came to our attention during a booster vaccine where, during his examination, our veterinary team discovered he had an umbilical hernia and was unneutered. Unfortunately, financial constraints were a significant hurdle to address these necessary medical needs.

Recognizing Miracle's situation, our dedicated VCA Canada Harvest Hills Animal Hospital team immediately explored the possibility of him qualifying for our Paw It Forward program. With swift approval, Miracle's surgery was scheduled. However, when the pre-anesthetic blood work results came back, we discovered a complication that required further investigation.

Thanks to the Paw It Forward program, we were able to conduct additional testing and provide the necessary medications. Our team worked diligently to develop a safe and effective surgical plan for Miracle.

One month later, Miracle underwent a successful surgical procedure and has since made a full recovery, much to the delight of his grateful owner!

We're incredibly proud to be a part of Miracle's journey to a healthier, happier life.

Sunny with a chance of ticks?

March is , a reminder that isn't just a seasonal concern.

can be active in temperatures as low as 4°C, meaning they can pose a risk even during winter months.

We encourage pet owners to remain vigilant year-round. This includes performing daily tick checks, understanding tick habitats, and consulting with your veterinarian about effective tick control measures.

Protect your pets from the potential dangers of ticks and tick-borne diseases with consistent, proactive care.
