In order to provide further education to owners who still insist on leaving their pet in a hot vehicle we have begun issuing warning letters to the registered owner of the vehicle.

EXAMPLE:
The Animal Protection Services of Saskatchewan has received a complaint regarding a dog left inside of a vehicle in hazardous temperatures without adequate ventilation, water, and/or protection from injurious heat. You are receiving this notice because you are the registered owner of that vehicle.

Date of alleged offence:
Location of alleged offence:
Outside temperature at time of alleged offence:

We understand that you mean to be kind when you take your dog for a ride in a car, but if left alone, you could be risking their life. Every summer the Animal Protection Services of Saskatchewan responds to countless numbers of calls regarding dogs and cats left alone in vehicles. These animals suffer needlessly and even die in cars that become unbearable ovens when parked in the sun.
A dog’s fur is designed to retain heat, and they cannot sweat the same way that people can to cool down. To cool themselves down, dogs pant and sweat through their feet.
The inside of a car parked in 29o C weather (85 F) can reach a temperature of 39o C in as little as ten minutes, even with the window slightly open. The temperature inside the car can soar to 49o C (120 F) within half an hour. At this point, the air temperature in the car is higher than the body temperature of the dog. Sweating and panting are no longer effective ways to regulate their temperature. This can result in heatstroke, brain damage, or death.
If your dog has heatstroke, he may pant uncontrollably, have a blank expression, collapse, or be unconscious. If you recognize these symptoms, cool him immediately by immersing him in cool water (body only). Take your dog to the nearest veterinarian immediately.
To prevent this from happening, leave your pet at home whenever possible on warm days. If your pet is outside on warm days, remember to provide protection from the sun and free access to plenty of cool drinking water. Strenuous activity and excitement should be avoided on warm days. When away from home, always carry water with you on hot days and give your pet small amounts frequently.
Allowing your pet to be in distress due to inadequate water, ventilation or protection from injurious heat is an offence under the Animal Protection Act, 2018 and the Criminal Code of Canada. Conviction of these offenses may result in a maximum fine of $25,000, 2 years in jail and prohibition from owning animals.
Thank you for your attention in this matter.

WHY MICROCHIP YOUR PET?

Last year, the Saskatoon Animal Control Agency (SACA) was able to provide a safe return home for 259 dogs and 77 cats found running at large. Of all impounded animals, 132 dogs and 78 cats were microchipped. A microchip is a permanent means of identification for your dog or cat. Unlike a tag on a collar, a microchip can’t fall off or get lost. The small electronic chip, which is the size of a large grain of rice, is inserted under the animal’s skin. It is a simple and easy procedure. Responsible breeders often have puppies and kittens microchipped before they go to their new owners. Another opportune time to have your pet microchipped is when it’s at the vet clinic to be spayed or neutered. A microchip can be quickly scanned by a SACA officer, animal shelter or veterinary clinic to identify the animal, leading to a happy reunion. The microchip identification number can also be entered in the City of Saskatoon pet license database, making it even easier to contact the pet’s owner. You never know when your dog or cat will sneak out of its yard and become lost. A microchip is an easy and affordable way to protect your pet and have a happy ending.

A round of a-paws for the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team (URT)!

When officers were travelling home late at night after an operation in the west central part of the province, they noticed in the distance, by the glow of headlights of their truck, a small furry friend in the middle of the highway. They initially thought it was a fox.

Stopping to investigate, the team noted it wasn’t a fox, but a little dog! 🐶 After a check with residents of nearby farms, the pup’s owner wasn’t located, so he was transported to Moose Jaw SPCA. A quick chip scan helped identify the owners and, the next day, the dog was happily reunited with them! ^mb

🐾 It's Dog Bite Prevention Week! 🐾

Did you know that understanding how to approach a new dog can prevent bites? Here are some tips to keep you and our furry friends safe:

Ask First: Always ask the dog's owner for permission before approaching.

Stay Calm: Move slowly and avoid sudden movements or loud noises.

Let Them Sniff: Allow the dog to sniff you before attempting to pet.

Approach Sideways: Instead of reaching over their head, let them come to you and offer a hand from the side.

Watch Their Body Language: Look for signs of stress like backing away, growling, or showing teeth. If they seem uncomfortable, give them space.

By following these simple steps, we can make interactions with dogs safe and enjoyable for everyone! 🐶❤️

ALL TIED UP? — Think you’re doing your dog a favour by taking it along when you’re shopping or running errands? Think again! Unless you’re visiting a pet-friendly business that welcomes your dog inside, it’s best to leave your pet at home. Leaving your dog tied up outside a business and unattended is a bylaw infraction and will result in a minimum $100 fine from Saskatoon Animal Control Agency (SACA) officers. As well, your dog could be stolen or could break free from its leash and go missing. Imagine the fear, confusion, and possible injury a dog running at large experiences. Leaving your pet inside your vehicle while you’re running an errand also endangers the animal. Within just a few minutes, the temperature inside your car will increase rapidly, putting your dog at risk of heat stroke or death. The Saskatoon Animal Control Agency is committed to promoting responsible pet ownership through education and enforcement. Learn more at https://saskatoonanimalcontrol.ca/
