Unlike humans, calves are born without immunity. 🐄 The cow’s unique placenta blocks antibody transfer during gestation, leaving calves defenseless at birth.

Colostrum is their lifeline, providing:
❗️Immunity through IgG (immunoglobulins).
❗Essential nutrients, growth factors, and energy to support survival and growth.

SCCL's annual clothing and food drive was a big success!

Thanks to everyone's generosity, SCCL topped last year’s results with an outpouring of donations! Our team made two trips to the Clothing Depot before the holidays because our bins were overflowing, and The Food Bank team picked up the rest of the food donations afterwards. With contributions of clothing, food, and cash, plus SCCL matching donations, the grand total in donations was $4,670.00!

A huge thank-you to everyone who participated—your kindness truly makes a difference.

Learn more about the economic implications of inadequate IgG consumption in dairy calves. Lower milk production, increased mortality, and higher treatment costs can all be consequences when calves don't receive sufficient colostrum and can cumulatively lead to an economic loss.

Feeding adequate colostrum can result in healthier calves and increased profitability. Learn how to maximize colostrum intake today and ensure optimal passive transfer!

Cold stress can be a major challenge for newborn calves. When calves are born in cold temperatures, they lose body heat rapidly, making it harder for them to regulate their temperature. Quality colostrum is their first line of defense, supplying not only essential antibodies but also the energy needed to combat cold stress and support early development.

With SCCL’s whole bovine colostrum, you can ensure calves receive high-quality colostrum with everything they need to thrive. Test your maternal colostrum and, if needed, boost it with SCCL colostrum for stronger, healthier calves this season.

Is your colostrum up to standard? High-quality colostrum with an optimal IgG concentration is essential for calves, lambs, and kids. Testing maternal colostrum using an optical or digital Brix refractometer helps you determine whether supplementation or replacement is necessary.

< 22% Brix indicates poor-quality colostrum.
22-25% Brix indicates adequate quality.
> 26% Brix indicates good quality.

If your colostrum measures below 22%, you can replace it with SCCL colostrum for reliable concentration levels. Even colostrum testing at 22-25% can be improved with SCCL colostrum to better meet your animals' needs. Don’t leave it to chance, test your colostrum!

Ewes with twins, triplets, or more often can't produce enough colostrum for all their lambs. Studies published in the Journal of Animal Science and Small Ruminant Research Journal indicate that up to 15% of multiples don’t survive due to inadequate colostrum, leading to starvation or hypothermia.

To prevent this, make sure every lamb gets colostrum, especially the weakest one, by supplementing with a colostrum replacer. This provides the immunity and energy they need to thrive!

A healthy start for your lambs and kids begins with proper colostrum management. Colostrum on day one provides lambs and kids with essential nutrition to defend against early challenges. When maternal colostrum isn’t available or needs a boost, SCCL’s colostrum products offer the ideal solution to support thriving newborns!

Make sure to feed colostrum as soon as possible after birth. If you don’t have high-quality or adequate maternal colostrum, supplement or replace with SCCL colostrum. Always check for cleanliness and refrigerate if needed to prevent bacterial growth.
