We're excited to share a video featuring Dr. Lucia Pisoni, a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Guelph and a valued partner of SCCL. With a robust background in calf health and gut physiology, Lucia's research focuses on the benefits of extended colostrum feeding during the first three weeks after transportation and how it can impact the instance of diarrhea. Collaboration between academia and industry is essential as it enables us to better support farms and producers in managing their herds, improving overall animal health and productivity with evidence based solutions.
Lucia also collaborates with SCCL as a Veterinary Consultant, helping to educate audiences worldwide on the importance of colostrum. Most recently, she presented at the Healthy Calf Conference, showcasing her dedication and expertise in the field.

Meet Amanda Fischer-Tlustos, a PhD candidate at the University of Guelph, who has been collaborating with SCCL for nearly a decade! From her Masterâs research on how delayed colostrum feeding can influence passive transfer, as well as gut microbiome and gut development, to her current PhD focus on colostrum synthesis in the udder.
This year, her impressive work earned her 1st place in the PhD Oral Competition and the Novus International ADSA/EAAP Travel Award at the 2024 ADSA! Weâre proud to support students like Amanda, who, alongside Dr. Michael Steele and collaborators, are making valuable contributions to the industry.

Partnering with Future Dairy Science Leaders! Meet Julia Petrou, a Masterâs student in Dr. Michael Steeleâs lab at the University of Guelph. Juliaâs research, conducted in collaboration with SCCLâs very own Dr. Juliana Mergh Leao, dives into the complex changes in mammary tissue microstructure and FcRn abundance during colostrum formation in Holstein dairy cattleâa vital area for advancing colostrum science and calf health.
This year, Julia presented her findings at the 2024 ADSA conference and earned 3rd place in the MSc poster competition! Weâre proud to support students like Julia through our long-term partnership with Dr. Steeleâs lab.

One of the most common questions we get is: "How soon should you feed colostrum?"
Dr. Ryan Davies explains the importance of timing when it comes to feeding colostrum. The sooner you feed, the better! Newborn calves have a short window of absorption, so it's crucial to give them that first dose of colostrum within the first few hours of life. This ensures they get the best start possible!
