Wishing our boss-mom Dr. Higgins a wonderful and happy birthday today 💝. Dr. Higgins and Derek welcomed a new sweet little bundle, a baby girl named Cooper 🧸, to their family this past summer. Dr. Higgins has been on a bit of a partial maternity leave, working some Saturdays and coming in to work to perform some of our more complex surgeries to ensure that our pet patients and their owners continue to be able to receive Acadia’s amazing care and service (including todya on her birthday 😂). Much like her older brother, Cooper frequently visits, helping to “distract” the staff with her smiles...starting her love for animals and perhaps a future in Veterinary Medicine early!

Our ‘February Dental Health Month’ was once again a success!! But if you missed it don’t worry because keeping your pets teeth and gums healthy is important ALL YEAR LONG! There are lots of small steps you can take to improve your cat or dog’s oral health. From VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) approved dental chews, treats and diets, to oral rinses/cleansers and of course good ol’ fashioned brushing, improving oral health has a proven link to improved overall health! Another reason to keep those smiles pearly white!!

We recently shared a story on our page about Hope, the absolute sweet girl who is in the care of New Hope Dog Rescue. Hope is part of NHDR’s “Guardians of Hope” program which fundraises donations that go directly towards the care of their rescue dogs with serious or severe medical issues. Hope has been receiving care here at Acadia and we are happy to say she is on the road to recovery and hopefully closer to finding her new forever home!! 💜🤍

The weather is absolutely frigid out there!! 🥶 and sadly it doesn’t appear like it will be warming up until after the long weekend. Please note that we will be closed this Saturday February 15th to Monday February 17th for Family Day. We hope everyone stays warm and cozy (a good time to just relax inside with family and snuggle your pets 🐾🩵!!). If you do need to go outside try to keep it short and remember to bundle up 🧣, our pets can suffer from the cold too, esp sensitive areas like paws, nose and ears!

I’m sure there’s a Husky or Malamute that would disagree 😉 but not everyone loves the winter as much as they do!! ❄️

Love animals and ever wondered how you can help out a good cause? Consider donating to a local pet rescue and make a big difference in the lives of an animal in need! Our friends at New Hope Dog Rescue and their ‘Guardians of Hope’ program features some of their rescued dogs requiring serious medical care and accepts donations with all funds going directly to the specific animal in need towards their medical bills.

Hope is one such pup! She was in to see us recently and is an absolute sweetheart! 💜🩷 Follow for updates as we get this girl healed up and back to feeling her best, and consider donating to her or one of her other furiends’ care!

February is Dental Health Month!! 🦷🪥

Your pets’ dental health is extremely important as it directly impacts their overall well-being, yet unfortunately by the age of three approx 50% of cats and 75% of dogs are negatively affected by periodontal disease. DYK poor oral hygiene can lead to painful infections, tooth loss, and even complications in other organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys. Just like us regular check-ups, at-home dental care and dental cleanings with oral health assessments (COHATs) are helpful for maintaining a healthy mouth and preventing serious issues.

🐶 🫁👃🏻 LET’S TALK BOAS This pup came to Acadia for BOAS surgery to correct an extremely elongated soft palate as well as stenotic nares. BOAS or Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome is a common condition seen in Frenchies, Bulldogs, & Pugs (and other short snout or brachycephalic breeds). Years of selective breeding has unfortunately led to this debilitating condition which can cause respiratory distress, exercise/heat intolerance, affect sleep, affect the gastrointestinal system and even cause permanent changes and damage to the airways!! For some it can become a severe animal welfare issue, but with continued education and responsible breeding we can hopefully improve & work towards eliminating these traits. There are many components to BOAS (see one of our previous posts) and unfortunately we can’t correct them all, but we can significantly help to improve their quality of life by performing surgery to remove the excess tissue blocking their airways and improve your pet’s breathing and comfort. At Acadia we use the cutting edge technology of our Vetscalpel CO2 surgical laser 💥 to perform this surgery. Our laser cuts and cauterizes the tissue which leads to LESS bleeding 🩸 , LESS inflammation and swelling, LESS pain, NO SUTURES needed and FASTER healing and recovery!! In fact ALL of our surgeries at Acadia are performed with our CO2 laser and we just LOVE all the benefits it gives to our patients! With this pup here, we performed a staphelectomy to remove a large amount of excess tissue from the soft palate that was blocking their airway (as seen in our video 😮), as well as a rhinoplasty to open up their stenotic nares (narrowed nostrils).
