🐶 🫁👃🏻 LET’S TALK BOAS
This pup came to Acadia for BOAS surgery to correct an extremely elongated soft palate as well as stenotic nares. BOAS or Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome is a common condition seen in Frenchies, Bulldogs, & Pugs (and other short snout or brachycephalic breeds). Years of selective breeding has unfortunately led to this debilitating condition which can cause respiratory distress, exercise/heat intolerance, affect sleep, affect the gastrointestinal system and even cause permanent changes and damage to the airways!! For some it can become a severe animal welfare issue, but with continued education and responsible breeding we can hopefully improve & work towards eliminating these traits.
There are many components to BOAS (see one of our previous posts) and unfortunately we can’t correct them all, but we can significantly help to improve their quality of life by performing surgery to remove the excess tissue blocking their airways and improve your pet’s breathing and comfort.
At Acadia we use the cutting edge technology of our Vetscalpel CO2 surgical laser 💥 to perform this surgery. Our laser cuts and cauterizes the tissue which leads to LESS bleeding 🩸 , LESS inflammation and swelling, LESS pain, NO SUTURES needed and FASTER healing and recovery!!
In fact ALL of our surgeries at Acadia are performed with our CO2 laser and we just LOVE all the benefits it gives to our patients!
With this pup here, we performed a staphelectomy to remove a large amount of excess tissue from the soft palate that was blocking their airway (as seen in our video 😮), as well as a rhinoplasty to open up their stenotic nares (narrowed nostrils). The improvement post op was immediately noticeable 🧡
Breathe easy friend!! 🫁

📺 Check it out!! Dr. Braaten was featured on CTV news last night to discuss recent concerns of marijuana exposure and toxicity in dogs after some Saskatoon pet owners had to seek veterinary care after their pets ingested suspected marijuana at local dog parks.
DKY💭: Dogs are very sensitive to marijuana products because they have a much higher number of cannabinoid receptors in the body. This means that even a very small amount can cause symptoms in your dog.
Fortunately, the lethal dose to cause serious negative health effects like organ failure, seizure, coma, or death is usually quite high. So while it only takes a very small amount for your pet to feel the effects or to get high, overdoses resulting in death are typically not as common.
Some of the common symptoms will see with marijuana toxicity in dogs are incoordination, drunk like walking or ataxia, drooling or nausea, dilated pupils, lethargy and squinted eyes. Some pets may also be a bit anxious and have an elevated heart rate, or be restless and panting. One of the biggest telltale signs will see in dogs with marijuana ingestion is urinary incontinence (dribbling or leaking). Treatment is usually focused on managing presenting symptoms - IV fluids to help flush out the toxins and treat dehydration, anti nausea or anti anxiety medications if needed. Pets usually recover within 12-24hrs or after a good nap.
While serious illness or death are rare outcomes, it’s still very important to always speak to your veterinarian or seek veterinary care if you suspect your pet has ingested something it shouldn’t have including marijuana products. Differences in dose/strength, pet size, and with the variety of products available including things like gummies, brownies, cookies, or medical grade THC products, other ingredients that may be present (ex: artificial sweeteners such as xylitol 🍬 or chocolate 🍫), can be far more dangerous, and even life-threatening if ingested by your pet and would requi
