Fireworks and Thunderstorms:

Summer is full of celebration and warm weather. However, this also brings fireworks and thunderstorms. Some dogs and cats can react poorly to loud sounds and explosions. Signs of anxiety in pets includes pacing, trembling, panting, drooling, attention-seeking, hiding, or bolting/running away.
Ways to calm your frightened pet:
- Crating your animal or putting them in a “safe room”
- Pheromone sprays or diffusers such as Feliway or Adaptil
- Calming supplements such as Zylkene or Purina Pro Plan Calming Care
- Thunder-shirts
- Ear muffs
- Calming music
- Positive association with high value rewards or treats such as lick matts or puzzle toys
- In some cases, severely anxious pets benefit from medication. If you think your pet may benefit from medication please contact us today.

Swimming:

Swimming is great low-impact exercise for our canine companions and an excellent way to remain cool during the hot summer months. Dogs should always be closely monitored in pools and water, even if they are excellent swimmers.
We recommend all dogs learn to swim in a controlled environment with a gradual incline. Even excellent swimmers can benefit from a life jacket to allow them to build confidence in deeper water and to protect against fatigue.
Be patient with canines that are not natural swimmers and offer encouragement and rewards. It could take 5-6 sessions for your dog to become comfortable in the water.
It can be helpful to join your pet in the water or invite another dog that is a strong swimmer to your training sessions.
We encourage introducing your dog to water as a young puppy (> 4 months of age) and start by getting their paws wet a few times before they start entering the water. Keep your swimming sessions short and pay attention to the temperature of the water.

Heat Stroke
As the warm weather approaches it is essential to ensure your pets are safe from heat stroke, otherwise known as hyperthermia.
Heat stroke occurs most commonly from dogs being left inside a car without adequate ventilation or being left in a yard without access to shade and water. Dogs regulate their body temperatures by panting and only have a small number of sweat glands on their footpads (unlike humans!). Dogs with restricted airways, such as pugs, boxers, and bulldogs are at an even higher risk.

Signs of heat stroke include elevated breathing rates, dry or sticky gums, bruising of the gums, lethargy, or even collapse/seizures.
If you think your dog is suffering from heat stroke, seek medical attention from a veterinarian immediately!
Some options to keep your pet cool in the summer:
- Ensure they have plenty of fresh, cold water available
- Plan outdoor activities that involve playing in water (sprinkles or swimming)
- Avoid the midday heat
- Never leave your dog in a parked car, even if the windows are down
- Cooling mats or jackets

Honey and I asked a few Coworkers what their favourite thing about working at our vet clinic was and we thought it would be nice to share that with you!

One of our receptionists quoted "I love when new puppies come in for the first time and helping them a receive a great first impression to a possible lifetime of fantastic care"

One of our Techs happily stated "Making friends with every and all our furry friends and helping them out as best as she can to help give them the best and happiest of lives. "

One of our VA's and one of our Vets both agree on "Giving our furry friends treats, especially when they are nervous really helps establish a form of trust, stability and comfort when coming into a place filled with multiple smells and sounds is a fun and important part of patient care and definitely a favourite thing to do on a daily basis."
