Meet Poppy, a five-month-old mixed-breed pup who weighs 17 kg (about 37 lbs). She’s cheerful, sweet, and ready for fun! This playful girl adores people, gets along well with other dogs, and is gently curious about cats. Poppy was adopted as a tiny puppy, but she came back to us through no fault of her own. Now, she’s looking for a new loving home to call her own. If you want a lively friend who will fill your days with laughter, come visit Poppy at the Saskatoon SPCA!

We wanted to quickly feature four of the amazing dogs waiting for their forever homes at the Saskatoon SPCA. Meet Fang, a sweet 4-month-old Shepherd mix with lots of playful energy. Tails is our 1-year-old Pitbull mix who loves to run around and cuddle. Pepe is a gentle 3-year-old mixed breed who’s been waiting the longest and can’t wait to meet you. And say hello to Cocomelon, a 2-month-old puppy who is learning new tricks every day.

Thank you to everyone who visited the shelter during the holidays. Last week, from December 30 to January 5, we found homes for 8 cats and 3 dogs! We know this season can be busy, so we are extra thankful for families who chose to adopt. You have made a big difference for these pets!

Meet Kevin and Pedro, two sweet, three-month-old guinea pigs looking for a loving home. Guinea pigs thrive with companions, so we’d like them to stay together as a bonded pair. Kevin is outgoing and will “wheek” for treats when it’s snack time. He loves exploring and meeting new faces. Pedro is shy at first, but with patience and gentle care, he is warming up and enjoying interaction. These playful buddies promise to bring laughter and squeaks into your life. If you’re ready for double the fun, reach out today!

Happy Sunday from the Saskatoon SPCA! We’re excited to launch our new Alumni Stories feature.

Meet Roy, a two-year-old border collie mix adopted in February 2023 by one of our staff members. He serves as her Emotional Support Animal and competes in dog sports, too. Roy has done well in several events and is a wonderful reminder that shelters are a great place to find both loving companions and skilled sport dogs.

Each Sunday, we’ll share tales from families who have adopted pets from our shelter. If you have a heartwarming update, please send it—along with photos—to [email protected]. Our staff loves seeing how former residents are thriving, and we may share your story on social media or in our newsletter!

Join us for our Shelter Garage Sale! We’ve been lucky to receive so many donations that we can share gently used pet items and more with you.

This sale helps us:
- Rotate newer items to the animals in our care.
- Find new homes for items we get in large amounts, like fish, reptile, and pocket pet supplies.
- Make room for critical supplies, such as food and health care items.

Every dollar raised goes toward important animal care expenses, so you’ll be helping pets in need with every purchase. We’ll also donate any unsold items to northern rescues and community foster groups.

Date: Saturday, January 11, 2025
Time: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Location: Community Room – Saskatoon SPCA (2250 Hanselman Ave)

Thank you for your support. We look forward to seeing you there!

We believe in responsible pet ownership, and the Canine Good Neighbour program sets a great example for all dog lovers. Thank you to evaluator Stacey Morrison, and to all of our volunteers who came to help.

January is National Train Your Dog Month! This is a great time to explore positive reinforcement, which means rewarding good actions instead of punishing mistakes. We will offer weekly tips through the month to help you train your dog (or any animal). Research in animal behavior shows that pets learn faster and feel calmer when they earn treats, praise, or fun playtime for doing the right thing. The Saskatoon SPCA recommends this approach because it helps build trust and lowers stress for the animal. By highlighting your pet’s successes, you create a safe learning space that makes training fun—and forms a stronger bond for the future.

Meet Pepe Le Pew, a 3-year-old black and tan mixed breed who has been at the shelter for almost a month and we have no idea why nobody has taken this love monster home. He is a bigger guy - he weighs around 35kg (77lbs). He loves attention and will paw at your leg for extra pets. He is housetrained - he really enjoys his daily walks. He isn’t suited for a home with cats, but he’s eager to meet new dog and people friends. We aren’t sure why he hasn’t been adopted yet, so come visit and see how sweet he is! Pepe will be your new best friend.

Meet Tails, a 1-year-old pitbull-type mix who adores people and other dogs. She’s full of energy and needs a patient home to help her learn good manners. Tails has spent most of her young life in a shelter, which has led to kennel stress—this happens when a dog lives in a shelter for too long, often causing anxiety and restlessness. With positive reinforcement training, a stable environment, and some patience, Tails will learn to relax and become a fabulous friend for you. Visit the Saskatoon SPCA today to learn more about Tails and see if she’s the perfect match for you!

You may have heard, the Government of Canada announced that the deadline for making donations eligible for a 2024 charitable tax receipt has been extended from December 31, 2024 to February 28, 2025. This extension aims to mitigate the impact of the recent Canada Post strike.

The holiday season is traditionally a time when we receive the majority of our community's generous support, allowing us to care for animals throughout the coming year. However, this year has been particularly challenging due to the postal strike, which has significantly reduced the number of donations we usually see during this critical time.

Like many charities, we rely heavily on this season to sustain our operations. With inflation driving up the cost of essential supplies and medical care for the animals in our care, your support is needed more than ever.

We’re grateful that the deadline has been extended and hope that those who have not been able to make their donation will consider sending it in.

Together, we can overcome these challenges and give every animal the second chance they deserve. Thank you for standing with us during this time.
