Could you be the reason your dog doesn't like to cuddle?

If you've had your dog for a long time and the dislike of petting is a new phenomenon, pain due to undiagnosed illness or injury could be the likely culprit. In this case, a trip to your veterinarian is in order to rule out a painful condition. If, however, your dog has always been rather cuddle-averse, it could simply be that it's just his personality.

Just as humans vary in their level of fondness for personal touch and affection, dogs, too, may desire varying levels of physical touch. If your dog is a rescue pooch, also consider that past abuse may have made him fearful of human hands. For dogs that like to be petted sometimes but not others, consider the way you're initiating contact.

In one study of 28 dogs who were petted in nine different ways, most of the dogs showed signs of being uncomfortable when petted on the top of the head or paw. The dogs also showed signs of stress, such as elevated heart rates, when they were held while lying on the ground, held by the collar or had their muzzle covered.

"The dogs' behavioral and physiological responses suggest that some common physical human-dog interactions are perceived as unpleasant by dogs", the researchers explained, which means that if your dog avoids being petted it could be because he doesn't like the way you're petting him.

On the other hand, scratches at the base of the tail, shoulder and chest were well-enjoyed and tolerated by most dogs. How can you tell how your dog likes to be pet? Learn to pay attention to his body language and other signals.

For those who don't get their dogs nails trimmed/dremeled on a regular basis. Notice on the longer nail how it is physically pushing the toe up? This affects the joints and can be painful if a nail breaks! I personally recommend bi-weekly visits to maintain a proper length, and more often than that to help them recede each time. If you hear clicking, it's time to get those nails trimmed.

won't come back when you call them?

Maybe they're a brand-new dog, a foster, a teenage puppy who has suddenly had their brain replaced by a turnip and forgotten everything you’ve taught them, a dog who can't resist chasing...and maybe catching...other critters, a dog who is liable to start a brawl with other dogs for the sheer thrill of it, a dog who is pretty spooky and will bolt if they get a fright. Whatever the reason you, you certainly wouldn’t bet money on them coming back when you call them. Enter: Longlines and the Magic of Management.

Longlines attached to a well fitted harness allow your dog relative freedom, while being safely attached to you. Yes, it's a compromise, it’s not quite the same as hooning around off lead, and you'll need to use your common sense when the time and place is to use one. Think a quiet reserve or the beach vs. the footpath.

You can keep everyone safe and allow your dog to sniff and wander, while preventing them from doing things we’d rather they didn’t (like dashing off after those sheep, rushing over to that group of dogs in the distance, or crashing that picnic) and learning that it pays to stick close to you.

When verifying your training, it's important to ask yourself these four questions:
1. Do I have my dog's attention?
2. How effective is my reinforcement?
3. Does my dog understand the cue in this context?
4. What should my next step be?
By asking yourself these specifics, you can identify where your dog's misunderstanding occurred during training.…
