Moose is taking the Connect 2YR K9 class. We have been working on obedience and confidence building- especially around new people. His mom reports after our last class he’s starting to warm up to her nephew who’s been visiting, and they stayed at the KOA and had some great experiences working him around strangers walking by.
Yesterday we started working on building confidence with obsticals and creating proprioceptive awareness of where his paws and especially hind end is. This is especially important for nervous dogs as feeling confident about their bodies and how to control themselves will improve their state of mind in general.
Next class will be at Bellevue park on more obsticals and we’ll see how he does!

Coopers first experience on a boat this week. We got some great fishing in Sun-Tues with amazing weather that was perfect for being out on the water!
He was very curious about every fish we reeled in- we got a good amount. It was a great training experience for him as getting in and out of a tippy boat was a challenge. At the end of our trip he was getting into the boat without much help or coaxing, So proud of him!

These two from day one have not gotten along. Orson the black and white cattle dog/aussie mix has a ton of fear aggression towards anyone but his immediate family and so his life has been isolated because he’s so reactive. We’ve been working on building up his confidence and tolerance towards his sister. Before just the site of his sister would set him off. But we’ve been working on people and dogs entering the home and walking with him. Likewise his sister River had developed some bad behaviours due to her experience with her brother. And so their mom worked on leash reactivity with River as well. Using back ties in the house is an excellent way to create more tolerance/safety and walking together with mom is a huge win! To be honest the hardest part of working with dogs is building the owners confidence and willingness to challenge their dogs when they need to be! This was a huge step for their Mom!

Lorenzo had a fun night with his mom and dad working on his recall, stay and heel! He gets over stimulated with new environments and especially when he sees other dogs so work worked on building up better obedience and long line/recalls when he sees other dogs.
He was pretty tired by the time we finished and his parents have some work to do!

Justice did some fun scent work drills today with her mom! She’s training to be a professional detection dog in the future and has completed the off leash ecollar course and is now working on fine turning her obedience and building up her ability to communicate with her mom when she detects a certain odour.
She’s got a lot of training ahead of her but her mom’s got some fun plans for this gal!

Last nights class was a wet one but we still managed to get some great training sessions in with every one!

Mason the husky worked on building confidence and challenging her outside her comfort zone

Heart the Pit learned the next phase of ecollar training with adding the ecollar into heel, place, recalls and a stay

Rosco the Corso is onto his second class of ecollar training and learning how to shut the ecollar off and what makes it turn on (hint: listening shuts it off 🤪) with lower annoying levels on the ecollar.

We were all wet by the end of the night but everyone did amazing!

Lexi finished her last ecollar class today with her mom at Bellevue Park. Her mom said she gets morning but compliments about how well behaved she is now. We did a little bit more work on her mom timing her Nopes and cleaning up some communicating markers with her mom. But ultimately she’s like a new dog from when we first started working together. Her mom really put some great time and effort into Lexi’s training and has such a great companion to keep her company now!
Way to go Lex!

The short snippet I took was the tail end of a great class.
Chase and Bruce both went for a walk on the boardwalk closely walking past people, dogs and bikes. Both of their parents were elated on how well they did. When they first saw each other, they did have an initial blowup upon seeing another dog who’s not happy to see you either.
However with some movements and pass-byes, in know time they were able to ignore each other and we started our stroll downtown with great success.
I couldn’t be more proud!

Mason is a lovely husky/malemute cross that’s part way through my C2YK9 class. Since I met her at the evaluation in May her parents have taken great lengths to increase her training schedule exponentially. Her recall has improved immensely and her attention is much better focused on her dad (mom needs more work haha). She’s still a work in progress and may eventually enroll in my ecollar program to prevent any further porcupine/vet visits and to work on car chasing/ dog sociability.

Heart is on session two of the ecollar behaviour modification program. Heart is well… full of heart! She loves everyone and is overly excited to meet new people and extremely over aroused when seeing another dog- close or far away.
We will be working on her basic obedience first and from there building on impulse control with distractions of various people, objects or dogs until she can compose herself enough to actually do a social with cooper.
Stay tuned on hearts progress!

Some dogs are easier some dogs are harder. Chases mom has worked her “tail” off with him because he’s a very very hard dog.
When I first met chase a few months ago, he would bark and lunge incessantly at me and any work we did he needed to be back tied to a solid object or muzzled to make him safer to work with.
At home he would loose his mind if he saw anyone or dog out the window and walking him was impossible for his mom.
But his mom had done the impossible! She’s been able to walk him past bikes, dogs, kids, people with barely any problems. I can walk right up to her and beside her while Chase is with her and he’s much more tolerant than he’s ever been.
Aggression is always more of a challenge, but Chase is coming from extreme fear and not true aggression- which we’re beginning to see more flight behaviour from him instead of lunging. He’s starting to see people as less of a threat and tolerate space much more readily.
It’s been a bumpy ride and his mom and buckled up and did her homework.

I tell a lot of my clients, that the behaviour class can be very successful, but it’s a hard class. Hard for the fact that it takes a good amount of time, and a lot of consistency and reps to start changing a behaviour that’s already engrained.
She’s done it I couldn’t be more proud of both of them! He still has a ways to go, but they are actively working towards socializing him more and more!

Maple did a great job on our last class at Bellevue park! He had very low reactions to dogs and even was able to heel, sit and stay past random people strolling by!
He’s part way through his behaviour modification program and is doing amazing. His mom feels so much more confident and comfortable having him around people with the ability to control his reactions so much more!
He’s still a work in progress but he’s doing leaps and bounds better each week.
Keep it up!

Stormy had her first introduction to the ecollar last night! She did a great job leaning how everything works and her mom did an amazing job on teaching her. Stormy is very social but is dog reactive in certain situations ( she likes to protect the baby of the house when out on walks). And so we will be building on her already awesome recall and teaching a more solid stay.

To be clear, I never teach anything with the ecollar. It’s always learned separately and made clearer with low level stimulations from the collar.
Don’t get me wrong, we will eventually make the ecollar annoying and hard to ignore, and in the later classes where stormy knows what’s expected of her and blows us off- we can give a punitive correction with the collar to enforce a solid off leash recall even with high level distraction.
This type of aversive is reserved for when the dog has already had advanced training and a clear understanding of what is expected and chooses to do otherwise.
It’s hard to build reliability without some sort of consequence.
And so ecollar work is done with a ton of positives to create the “I want to do this again” paired with low negatives and small aversives which says “I have to do this even if I don’t feel like it”.
That my friends creates a solid dog!

These two frenchies, king (male left) & cocoa (female right) are double trouble. Don’t be fooled by their adorable looks and small stature, they’ve got some punch to their jump!
Their mom is working hard on building up better obedience and impulse control, as well as discouraging the frenchy jumping they both love to do so much… but there’s only one whose actually instigating everything, can you guess which one is the culprit for all the chaos and jumping?
Take a guess and let me know!

Stew and brisquet are doing fabulously in my off leash ecollar program. Last night we started to layer the ecollar into everyday commands to create a better understanding of the ecollar for the dogs, which in-turn will create more solid obedience and understanding of the commands themselves.

Cody is just the loveliest German shepherd rescue I’ve come across in a long while. For 7 months old he’s quite big at 75lbs. His demeanor is so calm and relaxed for such a young adolescence dog ( I’m sure he has his moments), he’s really impressed me with how great of a dog he is, and how eager he is to learn. His mom struck it gold with this guy! 🏆🏆❤️
