Yesterday's article in BloodHorse recognizes the growing shortage of equine veterinarians. While this article focuses primarily on equine vets working in racing, the issues discussed apply to all horse vets. Trillium Equine was launched to help provide sustainable options to allow equine vets to "not feel like [they] have to choose between a family and a job" as mentioned in the article.

For years, the number of equine veterinarians has been declining, creating a shortage of practitioners that the industry is feeling the effects of today.

This article elicits so many emotions for me - grief for the community who faced the loss of Dr. Andrea Kelly last year, sadness for this owner who are an uncomfortable decision to help her beloved horse in her moment of suffering, and anxiety for the veterinarians who weren’t able to make it out to the farm because their plates are already filled beyond capacity.

At the same time, I feel hopeful because of all of the talented, thoughtful minds who are dedicated to making change in the equine veterinary industry. A huge motivation to start Trillium Equine was to support vet sustainability by facilitating essential time away from work. This will increase access to veterinarian care to horse owners as well. I am so thankful to everyone who has supported Trillium thus far, and I look forward to the opportunity to serve others in the future!

Katharine Fletcher found herself in an impossible situation when her 31-year-old horse needed to be euthanized but a veterinarian couldn't visit her property in time due to ongoing veterinary shortages in Western Quebec.

Our after-hours emergency service has been so successful in the Guelph area that as of April 2023, we will be offering services to equine practices in York, Peel, and south Simcoe regions as well!!

Welcome, Dr. Donati! We are so excited to have you join the Trillium team!

Dr. Megan Donati graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2021. Dr. Donati also works as an ambulatory veterinarian at Bennett Equine Veterinary Services in Cambridge. She enjoys all aspects of equine practice including emergency care and medicine.

Prior to working as a veterinarian, Dr. Donati was a passionate rider competing on the ‘A’ circuit in the equitation and jumper rings. In her spare time now, she enjoys spending time at her family’s cottage, hiking and skiing.

EXCITING NEWS!!
Trillium Equine is thrilled to welcome Dr. Michelle Courtemanche to our team!! She is a familiar face to many of our member practices 🙂

Dr. Courtemanche graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2005. After completing and equine internship in western NY she returned home to Ontario and has been practicing in this area ever since. For the last few years Michelle has been providing locum
services to several local veterinarians. We are excited to add her experience to our team at Trillium and look forward to the value she will bring to our clients.
In her free time Michelle is a devoted equestrian who competes at the FEI level in Combined Driving with her pony Hannah (and her groom/navigator husband). She and her husband Andrew are also avid mountain bikers and campers in the summer and enjoy snowshoeing and sleighing with Hannah in the winter. Michelle Courtemanche, Equine Veterinarian

The title of the discussion was "Tips and Tricks for Ambulatory Road Warriors"! The talk was well-attended with over 160 veterinarians!

Introducing Trillium Equine's founder, Dr. Jenna Donaldson!

Jenna graduated from OVC in 2013 and has been working as an equine vet ever since, practicing in Alberta, New York and southern Ontario. Jenna is passionate about sustainability in equine practice, and enjoys employing design thinking to practice problems. As a long time ambulatory vet, she's worked in practices of all sizes, and knows that even in a great on-call group, equine practices still struggle with sustainability which is what prompted her to create Trillium Equine!

We are thrilled to have Shiland Equine Veterinary Services as a member practice with Trillium Equine!! Thanks for your support, Dr. Shiland!

Dr. Jenna Donaldson has started Trillium Equine Emergency Services and Shiland Equine has signed up to help better serve our clients. How does it work? After 5pm on weekdays and anytime during weekends call my phone for the emergency number and a registered vet technician will take your call. They will verify that you are a client and then proceed in helping to get one of Trillium's team members on the phone to answer a question or to your farm quickly. I am personally looking forward to having the additional support of these veterinarians and making solo equine practice more sustainable. Ask me more about it the next time I'm at your farm!

Next up on our team.. Dr. Jorge Cruz!

Born and raised in Peru, Jorge is a graduate of University of Cajamarca, School of Veterinary Medicine, MV in 1995. In 2000, he moved to Kentucky, where he worked for Woodford Equine Hospital and the Davidson Surgery Center at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute.

He has been living in Ontario since 2012. He has worked at Milton Equine Hospital, Caledon Equine Hospital and is currently at Ontario Equine Hospital. In addition to his hospital work, he has worked as a Commission vet at Thoroughbred, Standardbred, and Quarter Horse tracks in Ontario. Major areas of interest for Jorge include equine anesthesia, radiology, dentistry and lameness.

Outside of veterinary medicine, he enjoys going to the beach, spending time with family, and is an art aficionado.

We are ready to provide after hours emergency services beginning July 4th!!

Dr. Jasmine Morrell-Bellai is a 2019 OVC graduate. After graduation, she completed an equine veterinary internship in Wisconsin. Now back home, Jasmine is living on a horse farm in Moffat and enjoying practice life with a local clinic, Campbellville Equine Services. Jasmine has a special interest in preventative medicine, geriatric care, and dentistry. She also enjoys emergency medicine, and strives to provide compassionate, top-quality care to her equine patients in their time of need.
In her down time, Jasmine enjoys spending time outdoors gardening with her two beloved cats, Piper and Bambi, and her fiancé, Grant.
