FEMALE FELINE FIX by FIVE FOR $150 incl. tax
Selkirk Veterinary Services is offering a new reduced price to get your female cat spayed if she is under 5 months old at the time of the spay (none or barely erupted adult maxillary K9 teeth as the age criteria). Spay surgery, exam, tattoo, and pain meds. All for $150 incl. tax.
The American Veterinary Medical Association endorses the “Fix by Five” for many reasons:
"Given the fact that cats can become sexually mature between 4 and 5 months of age, it doesn't make a lot of sense to wait until 6 months or older to spay and neuter them," Dr. Bushby said.
“Historically, many cat owners have been puzzled about when cats should be spayed/neutered. Leading veterinary organizations, such as the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Animal Hospital Association, the Association of Feline Practitioners, and the Association of Shelter Veterinarians are trying to clear up the confusion. Since cats can get pregnant at five months of age, these veterinary associations support spay/neuter of cats prior to five months. Spay/neuter by five months of age prevents the birth of unwanted litters of kittens, thereby reducing relinquishment of kittens to animal shelters.” - Phil Bushby, DVM, MS, DACVS, Feline Fix by Five Veterinary Consultant & Marcia Lane Endowed Chair of Humane Ethics and Animal Welfare at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine
It is a myth that neutering male cats before they are sexually mature predisposes them to urinary obstruction, he said. Spaying female cats before they ever come into heat reduces the chances of getting mammary cancer to nearly zero.
This small change in age would remove the risk of unwanted litters by ensuring that these “tween” kittens will not have that accidental first “whoops” litter. A study by Andrew Rowan projected that close to 90% of unwanted kittens and pups are born to mothers who would be spayed after the litter was born.
A survey by the National Council on Pet Population Study & Policy showed that nationwide about 70% of cats entering shelters are euthanized. There are areas that are much higher – cats’ chances of finding a permanent home once they enter a shelter are slim. There are far more cats than there are good homes.
To address this problem, we can move the age of sterilization back one month, eliminating the possibility of litters during that delicate period between kittenhood and maturity. This simple change in timing could prevent an enormous number of litters. It has been estimated that if even 35% of cat guardians would spay/neuter before maturity, the birth rate of cats would fall enough to ensure that every cat has a chance at a good home.
