Hi. This is Ilsa again. I can see that people have been viewing my profile, but most have swiped left.
So here is a brief video of me at work. As you can see, I am well behaved and I pay attention to my person. Maybe you can be my new person? PTSD support is my specialty, but I am willing to learn more if need more help.

Stopped by the new Island Pet Store in Cobble Hill for their grand opening. Lots of people and dogs there.
Teddy was very excited, so we started our training in the parking lot where he was able to be successful.
Best to have a short successful training session, than push your dog into a situation that will overwhelm them.
Nice weather has arrived (hopefully it will stay for awhile) and lots of us are out for a walk with our dogs. Please keep them safe by ensuring that they are always on a lead when in public spaces.
You might have a “friendly“ dog, but the dog that you are approaching may not be.

Introducing River to the treadmill.
We started slow, built up a bit of speed and ended on a positive note before she became overwhelmed.
Being able to use the treadmill is a great skill to have. When the weather is horrible or you are sick or injured and are not able to walk your dog, using the treadmill is a good substitute.

Pathway to an Enjoyable Walk
A series of tips for creating an enjoyable walk for you and your dogs.
Do you struggle with a dog that pulls on the leash so much that your walks are not enjoyable? If you do, and even if you don’t, please follow our series on making your walks more enjoyable. Over the next several days we will be sharing tips on creating better walks for you and your dogs.
Here is Tip 1:
Stop using a leash. Crazy, right? But yes, this really works. Use a “Lead” instead. Okay, you are thinking that this is the same thing, but it is not. This is a psychological trick to get you in the mindset of how to walk your dog. A leash by definition is a restraint, whereas a lead allows you to give direction to your dog.
Check back with us for our next tips.

Sit / Stay
Working on River’s sit. Our first session had River sitting close in front of me. We gradually moved away. During this session we have increased our distance to about 3 feet and increased her sit to about 3 seconds between treats.

Teaching “Leave It” and “Take It”.
Food is presented in a closed fist and the command Leave It is given. As soon as the puppy backs away the behaviour is marked with the word “yes”. The hand is opened to reveal the food, but is not offered until the puppy ignores it. Then the command “Take It “ is given and is allowed to take the food.

Threshold Control - Proofing
Now that we have practiced our threshold control, it’s time to add some distractions. We let 2 puppies play just outside of the door and she still held her sit. What a good girl!
We will continue to increase the challenge by; increasing the amount of time we ask for the sit, increasing how far away we are from her, changing doors and adding different and more challenging distractions… squirrel 🐿️.

Threshold Control.
Do your dogs have it? This is a skill that can literally save your dog’s life. This is something we practice every day during our Board & Train.
This brief video shows a beautiful girl remaining in a sit while the door remains open and I am outside. We practiced this numerous times before and after this video. In her next session I will be adding distractions.

Brandy’s First Recall Session.
Recall training starts on a short leash. Here are the steps:
1) Say your dog’s name and the command “come”. Caution ⚠️ … do not repeat the name or command.
2) As soon as your dog looks at you give praise. Your job at this point is to maintain your dog’s attention and to become more interesting than what they were doing.
3) If your dog does not respond to their name and command, simply step backwards and if necessary allow a light amount of tension on the leash. Caution ⚠️… resist the temptation to tug on the leash. As soon as your dog looks at you complete step 2.
4) As soon as your dog comes to you hook the collar with 1 finger and provide a treat with the opposite hand. Give praise and make this the best part of their day.
5) This may be one of the most important steps… allow your dog to return to what they were doing by giving them the release command. We often call our dogs to us and put an end to their fun. Dogs quickly learn this and avoid us so that they can continue playing. However, by releasing them to go back to play more often than you end play, your dog will be more likely to want to come when called.

Day 1 of our Loose Leash Walking Class and already the dogs are figuring out how to follow their person.

Learning to walk on a loose leash is about the process. Here, Teddy is following as we walk in a random pattern. Teddy gets distracted a couple of times, but a quick change of direction brings him back. The leash becomes taut briefly, but no need for correction.

One of the most common mistakes we make when trying to teach our dogs to walk nicely on a leash is trying to get to a destination.

Working on holding a sit position. We are on day 4 of our progression and added distractions in the form of another puppy running around. Despite his excitement, Berkeley is able to hold his sit. Great work Berk!
Our Loose Leash Walking & Recall class has moved days. We are now holding classes on Tuesday evenings. We have had a couple of spaces open up.
Our next class will be on Tuesday June 6th at 7:15pm. We will be in the park next to the Shawnigan Lake Community Centre.
