The Miniature American Shepherd is a small size herding dog that originated in the United States. This highly versatile, energetic dog makes an excellent athlete with superior intelligence and a willingness to please those to whom he is devoted.
Are you interested in this breed? The OFA, working with the Miniature American Shepherd Club of the USA, recommends the following basic health screening tests for all breeding stock:
- Hip Dysplasia (OFA, FCI or PennHip)
- ACVO Eye Exam
- Progressive retinal atrophy (prcd PRA)
- MDR1
- HSF4 (Hereditary Cataracts)
- NAD (Neuroaxonal Dystrophy)
Optional but recommended:
- Elbow Dysplasia
- Patellar Luxation
- Dentition
- CEA (Collie eye anomaly)
- DM (Degenerative myelopathy)
- CDDY/CDPA (Chondodystrophy with or without chondrodysplasia)
- CMR1 (Canine multifocal retinopathy)
- HU (Hyperuricosuria)
Dogs meeting these basic health screening requirements are issued Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) numbers. For potential puppy buyers, CHIC certification is a good indicator the breeder responsibly factors good health into their selection criteria.
