On Remembrance Day, we take a moment to honor and remember the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country. Their courage and dedication to protecting our freedoms deserve our deepest gratitude. On Monday, November 11, let us reflect on the impact of their sacrifices and strive to uphold the values they fought for us. Lest we forget, we stand united in appreciation for those who have given so much. We have created a small Remembrance Day garden in our planters to pay tribute to our heroes. ❤

A reminder on this long weekend that our Emergency Department is open 24/7, 365 days a year, should you and your pets need our support. 🐾

💜November is National Pet Cancer Awareness Month💜

November is an important month to highlight the impact cancer has on our beloved pets and bring awareness to the early signs and symptoms of cancer. Early detection can significantly improve treatments and out comes. Regular exams with your veterinarian can detect early signs of cancer. Your regular veterinarian can then refer your pet to our Internal Medicine team and Diagnostic Imaging team to best support you and your pets through their treatments!

What are some early signs of cancer?
- New lumps and bumps or those that change in size.
- Unexplained weight loss.
- Lethargy.
- Changes in eating and drinking habits.

According to the Veterinary Cancer Society, 47% of deaths in dogs are caused by cancer and almost half of dogs over the age of 10 will develop cancer, while 32% of deaths in cats are caused by cancer. Approximately 1 in 4 dogs develop neoplasia in some stage in their lives. Some cancers, like lymphoma, are more frequently seen in cats than in dogs. There are fewer statists of the rate of cancer in cats, however the rate of cancer in dogs is comparable to that of the rate in humans.

This month also emphasizes the need for research and funding for cancer treatments in animals, and advancement in veterinary oncology. By raising awareness, we can help ensure that pets receive the care they need and save more of our furry friend’s lives!🐾

🐾 Who doesn’t love puppy visits 🐾

These adorable puppies came to visit our Ophthalmology team for OFA eye exams!

OFA (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) exams are a health assessment for dogs to screen for genetic diseases. Many diseases and disorders that affect the eyes have genetic factors, which are passed down from a parent to an offspring. By performing these exams, it provides breeders with the appropriate information to breed the healthiest puppies possible and improve the lives of our furry friends! 🐶

🎃 Happy Howl-O-Ween! 🎃

During this exciting and spooky day, it is important to keep our furry friends safe and sound. The excitement of costumes, trick-or-treaters and spooky decorations can be overwhelming for some pets. Here are some safety tips to ensure an enjoyable Halloween:

👻 Keep all candy and chocolate out of reach and in a secure location, as these are toxic to pets, if ingested.

👻 Create a safe space for your pets away from the commotion of trick-or-treaters, spooky costumes and loud / frightening decorations, should they need it.

👻 Prevent pets from chewing on or ingesting hazardous items including: wires, small decorations or pieces of decorations.

Whether you are dressing up, carving pumpkins, or enjoying sweet treats, we hope you all have a great Howl-O-Ween!

Yesterday, October 27, was dedicated to all lost pets during the celebration of The Day of the Dead or Dia de los Mu***os. We remembered and honoured all the lost pets who never failed to bring love and compassion into our lives. They are remembered fondly with their favourite food, toys, photographs and various items that represent them and their happy moments. On this day, those who didn’t speak our language, yet understood us better than anyone, return to visit us. ❤🐾

We welcome you to continue to honor your lost pets, as we will have our beautiful altar set up until November 3rd. 🌹🕯

Meet one of our stylish patients, Tucker! 🐶

Tucker presented to our Emergency Department with a history of experiencing vomiting, diarrhea and a painful abdomen. Through further evaluation, he was diagnosed with Colonic Torsion.

Colonic Torsion is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the colon rotates around the soft tissue, attaching it to the body wall. This leads to loss of blood flow to the affected colon and cell waste builds up in the tissue. There is no known underlying cause of a colonic torsion.

Treatment includes exploratory surgery to address the torsion of the colon and performing a Colonopexy (a small segment of the colon is sutured to the body wall). Once the surgery is performed, the release of cell waste from the affected tissue can lead to shock and sepsis. Following recovery from the colonic torsion and any other associated shock, prognosis is very good in the long term!

We are so grateful we had the opportunity to care for sweet Tucker and to report he has recovered well! ❤️‍🩹🐾

We are so excited to announce Sophie Olsen and Madison Twa are offering their mental health services here at Pulse!

They both understand that making decisions about loved ones is never simple. Caring for pets, and making decisions about their lives is emotionally demanding. Too often the needs of others, finances, and time, complicate the decision-making process. Madison and Sophie are available to provide a supportive listening space for their clients to talk through everything that is going through their minds.

Sophie and Madison can help by asking questions that may assist in working through any decisions that may need to be made. Sometimes stressors are acute, they are in-the moment and overwhelming. Sometimes stressors build over time. Where they once felt manageable the stressor has become overwhelming. Madison and Sophie can provide “sounding boards” for their clients to figure out the many pro’s and con’s of what is going on, and what steps to take next. Madison and Sophie are comfortable in supporting their clients through the difficult moments. They will be there so that no-one has to be alone at a difficult time. Read more about Madison and Sophie below 👇

Sophie:

Sophie is currently completing her practicum placement as a last step in her Master’s Degree in Counselling. In combination with her education, Sophie brings years of experience working in the field of providing care to those who are facing complex and major
life decisions. She is comfortable working with individuals who are dealing with grief and loss, anxiety, stress, communication challenges and feeling completely overwhelmed

Madison:

Madison is meeting the final requirements for her Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology. While Madison has experience helping people of all ages, she has extra training in assisting children and young adults who are dealing with hard moments in life.
Madison understands how to translate what may seem to be overly complex and challenging into smaller pieces that can be worked through in more manageable bits. In this way she provides strong support for those who need a place to sort emotions and thoughts out.

Therapist's Schedules:

Sophie:
Tuesdays: 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Thursdays: 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Madison:
Fridays: 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Sundays: 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Day of the Dead 🌹 🕯

The Day of the Dead, or Día de los Mu***os, is a Mexican tradition celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, honoring deceased loved ones. Blending Indigenous beliefs with Spanish influences. The holiday recognizes that death is a part of life and aims to celebrate rather than mourn. Families create altars, or “ofrendas”, adorned with photographs, favorite foods, and items that belonged to the departed, guiding their spirits back to the realm of the living to visit their loved ones.

Each element serves a symbolic purpose, for example:

- Candles and bright flowers: guiding lights for their spirits
- Food and water: to quench the thirst of the deceased and strengthen them for their return journey
- Skulls: acknowledge the presence of death as part of life
- Salt: protects spirits from corruption by earthly temptations
- Paper banners: represent the union between life and death
- Photos and mementos: help us remember our loved ones and allows their spirit to be free
- Pan de mu**to (bread): offers a sweet treat to the spirits

In many altars you will find the image or statue of a dog, representing the dogs who help guide souls into the afterlife.

Why did we set up this altar at Pulse?

As pets are important family members, they too have found a place in this heartfelt celebration. Traditionally October 27th is the day an altar honoring pets is set up, and their spirits come to be with us one more time. We decided to set up the altar earlier, to allow time for items to be added before that day.

If you have lost a loved pet, how can you interact with this altar?

- Bring a picture of them to add to the altar using the provided tape.
- If you would like to leave a message to your pet, write a small note on a piece of paper and drop it in the jar on the altar.
- If you have a toy, treat or any item that reminds you of them or they loved, you can leave it in the dog bed.

We encourage you to come by and join us in celebrating and honoring all the lost pets. ❤🐾

October 7- 13 is National Depression Screening Day/Week.

The Calgary Counselling Centre, with the help of community and corporate partners, has provided a free public service called National Depression Screening Day/ Week (NDSD). This service begins today, October 7, 2024.

The NDSD is a short, anonymous, online questionnaire to aid you in understanding how you are feeling emotionally and offer you the opportunity to be screened for depressive symptoms. The quiz can also suggest appropriate resources, should you need it!

With it being Mental Illness Awareness week (October 6-12), it is a vital time to highlight the significance of mental health. Taking care of your mental health is important and it’s okay to reach out for support when you need it!

We encourage everyone, especially those in the veterinary community, to take this quiz and check in with yourself ❤. Click on the link below 👇

🐾Our Surgery Department is expanding! 🐾

We are so excited to announce Dr. Peter Gilbert will be joining our team in January 2025! Get to know a bit about him below 👇

Dr. Peter Gilbert hails from Australia originally and is married with 4 children, he could not have completed the long journey to becoming a small animal surgeon without their support. Currently two dogs and three cats make up the rest of the family. Away from the OR Peter enjoys fishing, hiking, kayaking and learning to ski.

Dr. Gilbert graduated from the University of Queensland in 1991. He worked in general and emergency practices in Australia and the UK over the next 12 years. In the early 2000s the desire to become a small animal surgeon really took hold. In 2003, Peter became a member of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Surgery.

A surgical internship at the Animal Surgery Centre in Melbourne followed in 2004. The journey continued (with the family in tow) with a move to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon. While there, Dr. Gilbert completed a small animal surgical residency and a Master of Veterinary Science in small animal surgery. Dr. Gilbert became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in Small Animal Surgery in 2010. Following his residency, Dr. Gilbert stayed on as an Associate Professor for 4 years and was chief of service for the last 2 years. For the last 7 years he has been an Assistant Professor of Small Animal Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Washington State University.

Dr. Gilbert has written book chapters, published multiple papers and spoken in Australia, Canada, Europe and the USA.

While Dr. Gilbert has wide experience in all aspects of surgery, he has extensive experience and passion for orthopedics including arthroscopy, limb deformity correction, fracture repair and joint replacement.

Dr. Gilbert is excited to be joining the team at Pulse and looks forward to providing the highest level of care to the people and pets of the greater Edmonton area!

Monday, September 30th is Truth and Reconciliation Day. 🧡

On this day, we honor the truths of the past and commit to walking the path of reconciliation with empathy and solidarity, to pave the way for healing and understanding. Let us listen to Indigenous voices, learn from their experiences, and work hand in hand to build a future where all communities are valued and respected.

Let’s honor the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families and communities together.

A reminder that Pulse Veterinary Specialists and Emergency will continue to operate as a 24/7 emergency hospital. We are always here to help! 🐾

Memphis came to see our Surgery department last year for a right caudal lung lobectomy and later, a right cranial and middle lung lobectomy. 🫁

A lung Lobectomy is a major surgical procedure to remove an entire lobe(s) of the lung. Dogs have 4 lobes on the right lung and 3 lobes on the left lung. Because Memphis had 3 lobes of the right lung removed, this has left him with one remaining lobe in the right lung!

There are different reasons a Lung Lobectomy may be necessary:

- Lung cancer or a benign tumor
- Infection or disease
- Foreign body in the lungs

In Memphis’s case, there was suspected migrating foreign body material in his lung, which was likely inhaled while hunting that weekend. Such foreign body material that can be inhaled includes, foxtails and grass awns. Once the material has been aspirated, it can migrate throughout the lungs, become embedded and cause coughing, irritation and long-lasting infections.

Memphis came in to visit us for a recheck today and we are happy to report this strong boy is doing well, despite his long journey! ❤️‍🩹🐾
