Angus is a 4 year old Retriever. In December 2024 his owners noticed some swelling to the left mandible (lower jaw) and upon investigation they discovered a hole present with some suspicious debris (photograph). Their veterinarian got them in for an anesthetized procedure to take dental x-rays, extract the affected teeth 🦷 and collect a sample to send to the laboratory for analysis. Unfortunately for Angus, the biopsy came back as Osteosarcoma.

Osteosarcoma is a malignant bone 🦴 cancer that can grow quickly and is extremely painful. Angus was referred to our Dentistry & Oral Surgery Department for further testing and treatment.

With malignant cancers, it is recommended to perform staging which in Angus’ case, we performed a CT scan of multiple cavities and tested the draining lymph node for any potential tumor spread. Fortunately, at this time, there is no evidence of tumor spread.

To remove the osteosarcoma, our board-certified veterinary dentist Dr. Christopher Sauvé and our resident-in-training Dr. Karen Hui performed a mandibulectomy procedure, which includes removal of the soft tissue and bone associated with the tumor.

Images show the 3D reconstruction before surgery (presence of tumor) and after surgery ( after mandibulectomy).

We are incredibly happy to report that Angus has recovered remarkably well! He is a happy, bouncy young guy, whose tongue is out of control! And he is much more comfortable. ❤️‍🩹

Angus will be monitored closely for any tumor recurrence or spread in the future.

Angus was a collaborative case between our Diagnostic Imaging team, Dentistry & Oral Surgery team, our Anesthesia team, and the Emergency team. Angus is such a lovely guy and we are so happy he is doing well. 🐶🐾

Our staff’s dedication to animals knows no bounds. Recently, a staff member went above and beyond by bringing in her own cat, Archibald, to donate blood for kitties in need. ❤🐾

This is just one example of how our team not only cares for pets but is willing to step up and help however they can—whether it's through medical care or acts of kindness like blood donations. We’re so proud to have such compassionate team members who make a difference every day!

We also want to give a very special shoutout 📣 to the handsome hero himself- Archibald- for his bravery in donating blood to help save his furry friends! 🐱

Chef 🐕 is a 9 year old Shih Tzu who was referred to our Dentistry & Oral Surgery Department by their regular vet in June of 2023 for a recurring dentigerous cyst.

A dentigerous cyst is a benign, fluid-filled sac that forms around a tooth 🦷that never erupted properly. This is why it is wise to take dental x-rays if your pet has missing teeth. Not all unerupted teeth will develop a cyst, but when they develop and aren't promptly treated, the cyst can continue to grow, compromising more teeth, as well as risking jaw fractures.

We are happy to report that as of January 2025, Chef’s mandible (lower jaw) shows significant remodeling which confirms resolution of the dentigerous cyst. This can be seen in the before and after 3D reconstruction of the CT scan! 🐾

Say hello to Rocket, a little rockstar! 🌟 He pops in every month for his Librela injection with our Surgery team to stay feeling paws-itively awesome! 🐾

Librela is a monthly injectable method of pain management for osteoarthritis (OA) in dogs. OA is a chronic and painful condition that can affect dogs of any age, size, or breed which can cause constant, long-term pain in dogs reducing mobility and impairing quality of life. Librela is a monoclonal antibody designed to target and reduce pain signals associated with OA in conjunction with other management strategies as deemed by your veterinarian which may include weight control, low-impact exercise, physical therapy, and pain management.

Thanks to Librela, Rocket can now enjoy his days full of tail wags and zoomies! 🐾💙

🐾 Winter walks are fun, but they can be tough on your dog’s paws! 🐕 Cold paws = potential frostbite! ❄️

Frostbite on a dog’s paws occurs when the tissues in their paws freeze due to prolonged exposure to cold temperatures. This condition can cause severe damage to the skin and underlying tissues, leading to pain, swelling, and even permanent injury. Frostbite typically affects the tips of the ears, tail, and paws, as these areas are more exposed to the cold. It is most common in extreme cold conditions, especially when a dog is walking on snow or ice for an extended period without protection.
To prevent frostbite, it’s important to limit exposure to cold temperatures and use protective measures like dog boots to keep their paws warm and dry during winter walks.
Dog boots are also beneficial for:

❄️ Protecting against ice, salt, and chemicals
❄️ Preventing injury and slipping
❄️ Eliminating snow build up in the paws

Kyrie had so much fun in the snow this afternoon, showing us just how stylish and fun her winter boots are while keeping her little paws protected! 🐾

Case Spotlight: Ivar the Sphynx Cat’s Successful Endoscopic Procedure 🐱

Ivar, a Sphynx cat, presented to our Emergency department after ingesting several Nerf gun bullets. Given the nature of the foreign objects, immediate intervention was required to prevent potential complications.

To confirm the ingestion of foreign objects, Ivar first received an abdominal X-ray 🩻 from our radiologist, Dr. Kawalilak. The X-ray showed the presence of the foreign material in his gastrointestinal tract, guiding our team’s next steps.

Under the expert care of Dr. Cyrus and his team, Ivar then underwent an endoscopy—a minimally invasive procedure in which a flexible tube with a camera is inserted into the body 📸. This allowed the team to carefully locate and remove the Nerf bullets from Ivar’s gastrointestinal tract without the need for a more invasive surgical approach.

We are pleased to report that Ivar recovered well! See below for a video of the endoscopy procedure, providing a closer look at the successful removal of the foreign material. We encourage pet owners to always keep such items out of reach of your curious furry friends to prevent similar incidents, as this is a common occurrence! 🐾
