Meet Bear 🐻, a sleepy surgical patient! Bear arrived at our emergency department yesterday, presenting with a history of not bearing weight on his front left leg. After radiographs were taken, it was determined that Bear had fractured both his radius and ulna. His care was then transferred to our surgical team, where Dr. Bruce and his team proceeded with the surgical repair of Bear’s leg.

The radius is the main weight bearing bone in the lower arm. This is the bone that we need to fix and the one you will see repaired. To repair the fracture, Dr. Bruce carefully realigned the bones using bone-holding forceps. A metal plate was then placed on the top surface of the bone, and 8 screws were used to secure the plate in place. This can be shown on his radiographs below!

During Bears procedure, Dr. Parker, our Anesthesiologist provided a local nerve block to help with a more stable anesthesia and more comfortable recovery.

We are so happy to report Bear is now resting and recovering after his successful surgery! ❤️‍🩹🐾

🎄Meet Chloe, a Festive Patient! 🎄

Chloe came to our emergency department one early October morning with a history of vomiting and lethargy. After a thorough assessment and diagnostics, Chloe was diagnosed with IMHA (Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia).

IMHA is a condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the body's own red blood cells. This leads to anemia, meaning Chloe's body didn’t have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout her body, making her feel weak and tired.

Treatment for IMHA can include blood transfusions, IV fluids and medications to suppress the immune system and prevent further destruction of red blood cells.

Chloe's care was transferred to our Internal Medicine department, where Dr. Cyrus and his team performed her blood transfusion, provided IV fluids, continued her medications and of course gave her lots of love! ❤️‍🩹After numerous recheck appointments, we are thrilled to report that Chloe is doing very well. She even gave us her biggest smiles during her recheck today! 🐶

Take a look at this coo' case 👇

Bird-Bird, a nearly 17 year old pigeon, presented to the cardiology team for further work up of a heart murmur 🫀 noted by his regular veterinary team. After his cardiac exam with our cardiologist, Dr. Hawkes and our cardiology resident Dr. Garcia-Revilla, an echocardiogram was performed to examine the structure and function of Bird-Bird's heart. Bird-Bird was given a light sedation to help keep him still and calm for this and he was also provided with supplemental oxygen throughout the imaging process.

Bird-Bird's echocardiogram results demonstrate degenerative mitral valve disease. This is a condition in which the mitral valve, which separates the left atrium from the left ventricle, becomes thickened and no longer is able to close/seal properly. This results in regurgitation of some blood from the left ventricle back into the left atrium instead of out to the rest of the body via the aorta. Over time this regurgitation can become quite severe resulting in chamber dilation and eventually congestive heart failure.

Thankfully, at this time, Bird-Bird remains in the early stages of this condition. Annual to semi-annual rechecks will be recommended to monitor for any progression of the disease. ❤️‍🩹
