Lynne is our primary veterinary technician and does all our tech appointments at Garry Oak Veterinary on Tuesdays and Fridays! 😃

These include arthritis and allergy injections, regular bloodwork, a**l glands, nail trims and ear cleans.

Our staff are dedicated to continuing to learn, such as the case with Brianna! If you didn’t already know, she is currently in tech school! 🩺🐾

Lola came to Garry Oak Veterinary Hospital for an Exam to get her Flea and Tick prevention!

As a puppy, they have to be on a monthly prevention as their weight can fluctuate since they are growing so fast!

Eventually, the switch can be made to a 3 month protection.

✨ As a reminder, we have fleas and ticks year round on the island! An exam is required within the past year to dispense flea/tick preventatives as they are prescription.

Keep your pet cool with a trim, and don’t forget to check regularly for ticks, especially in skin folds, around the eyes, between the paws and in their ears!

WARNING! Dogs cannot eat grapes! 🚫

Here we are inducing emesis (vomiting) with Sullie as he ate some grapes. We’re doing follow up blood work to ensure his kidneys aren’t impacted.

In the one photo, you’ll notice him grimacing. Grimacing and lip licking may be a sign of nausea or impending projection 😅

NEWS!! 🤩 Drs Emma and Dhawala are expecting their first child in August and are going to be taking time away from the practice to be at home with their new bundle of joy!

We are all excited to announce that Dr. Lesia Hyzka will be joining the Garry Oak Veterinary Hospital team to help manage the case load while Emma and Dhawala are away.

Dr. Lesia Hyzka worked with Emma at Hillside Veterinary Hospital, was one of her mentors after graduation and have been friends with her and Dhawala ever since. We are so lucky to have Dr. Hyzka join our team!!! 😃✨

✨ Garry Oak Veterinary is NOW offering a discount off any subsequent dental procedures if they are done within 12 months of their last cleaning!! ✨

Regular cleanings and preventative measures are recommended by our vets for long-term oral health care. We know that some pets do not approve of teeth brushing so we are striving to make our services more accessible for everyone.

If you would like to book a dental assessment please call or email our clinic 📞

Things you can do for preventative oral care in between dental cleanings:

- dental diets
- teeth brushing
- dental treats
- water/food additives
- oral gels/wipes

Any product that shows the VOHC Approved seal has been rigorously tested and approved by veterinarians to help prevent and reduce tartar and/or plaque.

Note: Garry Oak Veterinary does not recommend raw hides, despite the VOHC approved seal.

Read below for what NOT to give to your dog.
It can save their life!!

PUPPIES: their teeth are SUPER fragile, so we only recommend puppy products (ones that are labelled for puppies).

This recommendation stays until 1 yr of age as newly erupted adult teeth have softer enamel and are still at high risk for breaking.

ADULT DOGS: to reduce the risk of teeth breaking, we recommend using the “knee test”.

What’s that? ☺️

If you press the product against your knee and it does NOT bend, then it can break a tooth. If it bends then it will likely not break the teeth.

For this reason, we do not recommend bones, pig ears, yak cheese etc. We also do not recommend raw hides for their risk of choking 🚫

Our favourite products? Veggiedents for edible chews, and our favourite brand for toys are Kong! ✅

To anyone looking to travel to the US with your pet this summer, please have a look at the new US regulations for DOGS! 🦮

Beginning August 1, there is a change to the requirements to entry 🚗✈️

Please reach out to us if you’re unsure about the status of your dog’s Rabies vaccination or microchip!

Starting on August 1, 2024, dogs entering or returning to the United States must meet new, specific requirements depending on where they have been in the 6 months before entering the U.S. and where they received their rabies vaccines (if required).

We now offer light therapy for healing skin! ✨

Using Phovia (as you can see in the photos), the function of the cells within the dermis and epidermis can be manipulated to reduce inflammation but still acccelerate regeneration.

How does it work? 💡

Phovia is a two-part system, comprising a LED lamp and a chromophore gel.

The gel contains chromophores, which are molecules that absorb light at a particular wavelength and emit colour.

Used together, they produce multi-wavelength fluorescent light energy that can pe*****te the skin to variable depths, with different beneficial levels.

As spring is gearing into full bloom, we do see more allergy flare ups with the pollen increase 🌸

Pollen is a common allergen related to Canine atopic dermatitis (an inflammatory and itchy skin condition).

Pollen might be tough to avoid because of how easily it spreads around in some areas, however wiping paws after walks will help reduce the allergen exposure 🐾
