Hello friends!

The total solar eclipse is just around the corner, and just about everyone is ready to see the once in a lifetime event. We are seeing some mixed information about pet/wildlife safety.

Contrary to what some may read, the sun itself is not any more dangerous during the eclipse. The reason protective eye wear is recommended for humans (who wish to observe the eclipse) is because many of us will be staring directly at the sun that day, which is something we typically avoid.

For our pets, and outdoor wildlife, that day will be similar to any other day. Our pets don’t stare at the sun, so there is no need to keep them indoors on April 08 for any extended period of time. They may notice the change in temperature, but it is unlikely they will exhibit any unusual behaviour.

The eclipse can be more unsettling for birds. The dimming of the sky can mimic behaviour at dusk and during early storm formation, so some birds may demonstrate a wind-down behaviour and there may be less activity in the sky during the peak eclipse. Once the sky returns to normal, so does their behaviour.

If you are purchasing eclipse glasses, please make sure they meet these criteria. For additional information about the eclipse please see:
https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/safety/

For a list of approved solar-viewing goggles please see:

https://eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters

It is not safe to watch the eclipse through the lens of your smartphone - it can damage both your phone camera and your eyes. Try this instead:

Safe watching our friends!

Bylaw 36-2004 sec. 8

All dogs must be leashed at all times when in public (unless in designated areas).

Fines start at $105.

We believe you when you say your dog is the best trained, friendliest dog ever but everyone must abide by the bylaw no matter the dog’s size or personality.

🐕 Making sure you have the proper equipment for your dog’s walk is one of the keys to walking success.

Your dog’s harness or collar should be properly tightened and adjusted so that your pup can’t accidentally slip off during your walk.

We always recommend having two different types of leashes! A 6-foot leash and a long line. When it comes to choosing between them for your dog's walk, there are distinct benefits to each option.

A 6-foot leash offers more control and is suitable for walking in crowded areas or when you need to keep your dog close by your side. It allows you to maintain a shorter distance between you and your dog, which can be helpful for training purposes or if you're walking in areas with distractions.

On the other hand, a long line, typically ranging from 15 to 50 feet, provides more freedom and space for your dog to explore while still being under your supervision. This can be beneficial for activities such as recall training, allowing your dog to roam and sniff around while still maintaining control and safety.

Ultimately, the choice between a 6-foot leash and a long line depends on your dog's behaviour & training needs, and the environment in which you'll be walking.

❓Which do you prefer for your dogs?

Amazing!

For two days, a 61-year-old man in the southern Alberta town of Taber was stuck in a muddy ditch. Had it not been for his dog, officials say the man might have been there for much longer.

Happy news!

With tears streaming down my face, I wish I could do more than just say THANK YOU. This community absolutely blows me away on a regular basis.
The last 42 hours have been absolute hell but we have Ginny back. She has a few scrapes and is exhausted and so happy.
We have barely eaten or slept and are going to take a moment for our mental and physical health, and snuggles, and then get back to all the messages we've had to ignore the past two days.
Rescue work can tear your heart out and this will serve as a good reminder not to become complacent. Of course I blame myself for Gin getting away. So I have to think "how can we ensure that this never happens again?" we can use all the right techniques and tools, and still have things like this happen. We deal with animals with severe trauma on a regular basis and sometimes they act in fear, unexpectedly.
I will be reaching out to pet tracker companies similar to AirTag and purchasing a bunch of trackers for every single rescue animal to go home with one, moving forward.
Ginny is safe and sleeping in Rob's lap in our living room in her favourite chair.
So very sincerely, thank you so much to everyone who posted, shared, walked, and drove, and helped us find our girl. The support is genuinely overwhelming and you all have our deepest gratitude 🙏
Thank you all so so much.

Update Saturday afternoon: Ginny is home!

Update as of 8:13pm Friday
We were just informed that Ginny was spotted across from the bowling alley around noon (Port Elgin). We will be leaving some dirty laundry and food out, along with her harness and toys. The folks at the bowling alley will be keeping watch for her throughout the night.
PLEASE, if you see Gin, contact us immediately at 5192702859 or 5197744212, or either of the numbers listed on other posts & posters hung in the area. Try to keep her in sight without chasing. If she does not run, get low and toss treats / kibble. She is in flight mode and we need to get her safe. She is so very loved and missed. 🙏
Thank you to everyone who is out looking. Someone please see her

No sightings since 7am
We've been out looking for hours, but she could be anywhere by now 😔
Anyone with free time, please drive or walk the area and watch for her
Last spotted near Independent grocery store Port Elgin
She may be hiding so please check your back yards, sheds, under porches
Very timid
Pink collar
Microchipped
We can't not find her
If anyone has a drone to do some fly-overs of the area, it could help spot her.
